Stellantis struggles to rebuild supplier trust despite legal win

Attorneys representing Stellantis were in a courtroom in Detroit earlier this month, arguing a case before the Michigan Court of Appeals.
That hearing, involving the contract between the company's U.S. operating arm known as FCA US LLC and supplier Kamax, resulted in a decision that went in the automaker's favor.
While it's not unusual for automakers to deal with lawsuits, industry watchers say it is unusual for automakers and their suppliers to engage in public fights.
But it's not a new story for Stellantis, and the challenges the owner of the Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands has had in dealing with its suppliers was on display again this week with the release of a supplier sentiment survey.

Here again, Stellantis stood out, ranking last among the automakers surveyed in the 25th annual North American Automotive OEM-Supplier Working Relations Index Study from Plante Moran (OEM is an abbreviation used to refer to automakers as "original equipment manufacturers"). In order, from best to worst, Toyota, Honda and General Motors each saw their scores increase over last year, while Nissan, Ford and Stellantis saw their scores drop. Other automakers, including Tesla, don't participate.
The order of rankings is unchanged from last year. Stellantis, however, has had the worst score since 2021 — the same year it was formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot maker PSA Group — and going back earlier, the automaker had the worst, next-to-worst or tied-for-worst score since 2008.
This year's results also represent the largest gap since 2008 between the top automaker and the bottom one, according to Dave Andrea, principal in Plante Moran's Strategy and Automotive and Mobility Consulting Practice. The results are based on responses from 665 supplier executives from 398 Tier 1 suppliers at a time when the auto industry deals with volatility from changing market conditions and is now facing the uncertainty caused by tariffs.
The companies that do well on the survey tend to be known for better communication, responsiveness and treating their suppliers like partners.
'The top three are doing the things better that enable suppliers to better control their costs, achieve equitable cost-sharing and better navigate uncertainty,' according to Angela Johnson, a principal in Plante Moran's Management Consulting, Supplier Relations Analytics. She said suppliers aren't expecting automakers to bear all the costs.
Stellantis provided a statement through spokeswoman Jodi Tinson acknowledging that it has work to do:
"Despite increasing our engagement activities with our suppliers since Stellantis was formed, we recognize that more work is needed to continue building trust. This remains a priority for Stellantis, and we will continue exploring strategic initiatives while working with our suppliers to focus on improving where it matters most."
Regarding the Kamax suit, which stems from an Oakland County court case, the automaker said it was pleased 'a court has once again ruled that our purchase order contracts are enforceable requirements contracts. As we've stated in the past, it is never our intent to use the court system to resolve such disputes; however, certain situations unfortunately require it. Stellantis remains committed to working with our suppliers, so that we can continue to build the vehicles that our customers desire."
The recent ruling from the Michigan Court of Appeals deals with Kamax's effort in 2023 and 2024 to push the automaker to renegotiate the prices it pays for automotive fasteners because, Kamax said, the costs to produce the parts had skyrocketed. Kamax later said it would stop deliveries but relented following a decision in Oakland County Circuit Court, and the case eventually made its way to the Court of Appeals.
It's one of numerous court cases involving Stellantis and its suppliers in recent years.
Detroit-based attorney Dan Rustmann, whose firm, Butzel, represents numerous suppliers, called litigation between suppliers and automakers very unusual and typically a last resort.
Rustmann, who noted that he represents 'a lot of Tier 1 suppliers,' said that 'in my experience dealing with many different carmakers … anecdotally Stellantis has been the most difficult of any of the customers that I had to deal with on behalf of my clients.'
In times of rising costs, for instance, some automakers are more willing than others to provide relief, he said.
'In my experience, Stellantis has not been so willing and that's why they're facing all this litigation and disruption from their supply chain,' he said.
Rustmann said his firm's experience aligns closely with the results of the Plante Moran survey.
Although Rustmann said he can't make a direct connection to the impact on the end product, meaning the vehicle that a consumer purchases, he said it's common sense to treat others fairly.
'When you treat a supplier poorly and beat them down and don't give them relief when they have a cost increase … you're not going to get the best (technology) from them,' he said.

'This is my two-year review of my $70,000 mistake here,' TikTok user @silverbackgreybeard said to start the video, which he posted on Sunday. 'Purchasing this vehicle in 2023 just because I needed a vehicle, and walking in and letting them play with the numbers for me.' The on-screen text reads, 'My $70,000 first new car in my 40s.' Whether you've fallen on financial hard times or simply made poor decisions, bad credit can severely restrict your ability to finance a vehicle. Car buyers in this situation will generally pay higher interest rates over a longer loan period to overcome this challenge. That's how a 2023 Ford Explorer that starts out at approximately $40,000 can quickly turn into a $70,000 car note. To make matters worse, @silverbackgreybeard is already noticing several problems with the SUV in the short time he's owned it. What's Wrong? 'Since the two-year warranty is up, I started doing all the maintenance myself,' he said. 'One thing I noticed right off the bat was that my cabin air filter was filthy. They hadn't changed it in the two years we've had it.' The clip then cuts to him pointing to the trim on the rear bumper. 'Right here, it's already starting to change color. It's making me angry,' he said. And, finally, he noted, 'Several pieces of chipped paint within the first 5,000 miles. And I brought it up, and they told me the paint was not under warranty. They also told me that by Ford specs, they were allowed to have these all over the car.' Commenters Slam the Driver In the comments section of the video, plenty of viewers offered their own opinions on his story. Not all of them are positive. 'Brave of you to put yourself out there on this one, geez,' wrote one person. 'Rough comments. #Karma.' 'Any man paying $70,000 for a Ford Explorer should not be giving ANYONE advice on ANYTHING,' wrote a second person. 'Rock chips are not covered under any manufacturer warranty,' wrote someone else. According to ConsumerAffairs , this user is mostly correct. Warranties are generally intended to help you with mechanical or electrical issues or manufacturing defects. If a paint chip happened as a result of regular road wear, the warranty will likely not cover it. If the paint peels due to a manufacturer's error, the warranty may cover the cost of repair. Of course, it's important to check the warranties on your vehicle to make sure. A factory warranty may cover certain paint defects caused by other repairs. An extended warranty may also cover certain paint-related damages. It's always important to read the fine print before you sign any contracts. Ford's Hot Hatch Is Now Officially History

The end is here for Ford's last hot hatch as the company confirmed to Motor1 that every factory build slot for the Focus ST is spoken for. "All Focus ST factory orders until the end of production have now been reserved," European communications manager Finn Thomasen said. Dealers across the Continent may still have a few unclaimed cars hiding in back lots, but once those are gone-and when Focus production stops in November-the book will officially close on Ford's 45-year hot-hatch chapter. The Focus joins a growing list of Ford passenger cars already in the rear-view mirror. The Fiesta bowed out in 2023, the Mondeo in 2022, and the tiny Ka back in 2020. Without them, Ford's European portfolio is dominated by crossovers such as the Puma and Kuga. The shift has taken a bite out of sales: through April, Ford moved 149,601 vehicles in the EU, U.K., and EFTA markets-down 2.2% year-over-year and less than a third of Volkswagen's haul over the same period. Even Hyundai and Kia have pulled ahead, underscoring how much ground Ford has ceded without its affordable hatchbacks. Yes, the seventh-generation Mustang still flies the performance flag, but it's hardly a volume play. EU taxes punish engines bigger than two liters, dogging the 5.0-liter V-8, while the smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost was pulled from European order books at the end of 2020. The pony car, therefore, lives on as a niche halo, not a substitute for the daily-drivable, budget-friendly thrills once delivered by ST-badged Fiestas and Focuses. Whether Ford ever revisits the hot-hatch formula likely depends on batteries, not boost pressure. Former Ford of Europe boss-now VW sales chief-Martin Sanders has hinted that the Blue Oval could tap further into Volkswagen's MEB electric platform, the foundation for the forthcoming Explorer and Capri EVs. VW has already promised an electric GTI; a battery-fueled Fiesta ST or Focus ST revival isn't unthinkable if the economics line up. For now, though, enthusiasts must look to the used market or pivot to rival brands still flying the internal-combustion hot-hatch flag. The Fiesta Supersport of 1980 lit the fuse; the Escort RS, Fiesta XR2, and decades of ST variants kept the fire roaring. With the Focus ST's curtain call, the combustion-powered Ford hot hatch becomes history. What replaces it, if anything, will almost certainly hum rather than howl. Overview While hybrid and electric people-movers are all the rage these days, the Mustang proves that American muscle is alive and well—in Ford's stable, at least. America's favorite pony continues to deliver on its 40-plus-year reputation as an affordable sports car in either fastback or convertible form. A 315-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder offers a more contemporary approach to tire-roasting, but a 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8 is still available for eight-cylinder loyalists who can't live without a baritone soundtrack. Both EcoBoost and GT models are potent enough steeds, but the 500-hp Dark Horse is the way to go if performance is a top priority. Regardless, the Mustang's tasteful blend of retro and modern touches is the perfect example of advancements not spoiling a timeless recipe. What's New for 2026? A new FX appearance package is now available on GT Premium models, paying homage to one of the Mustang's most iconic eras. The package celebrates the third-generation Fox-body 'stang, complete with callback exterior styling accents and a retro cabin redesign. A pair of new wheel designs are on offer as part of the kit; Performance-Package-equipped models get rad Oxford White wheels reminiscent of the fan-like shoes found on the old Mustang Cobra, while the remaining models get a revised version of the Mustang's existing 19-inch split-five-spoke wheels, also painted in white. The Oxford White theme continues with the badging, grille nostrils, and optional white-out taillights on Performance Package variants. Inside, the cabin features plaid perforated leather seat inserts, silver and blue contrast stitching, and carbon fiber trim from the Dark Horse. Independent of the FX package, a new aqua-ish Adriatic Blue Metallic paint option is available on all Mustang models, and the Orange Fury hue also returns after being discontinued in 2019. Ford says that the order books for the 2026 Mustang will open in late June. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Ford Mustang is expected to start around $34,000 and go up to $70,000 depending on the trim and options. EcoBoost $34,000 (est) EcoBoost Premium $40,000 (est) EcoBoost Convertible $42,000 (est) EcoBoost Premium Convertible $45,000 (est) GT $49,000 (est) GT Premium $53,000 (est) GT Premium Convertible $58,000 (est) Dark Horse $66,000 (est) Dark Horse Premium Coupe $70,000 (est) 0 $25k $50k $75k $100k $125k The turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost has nothing to be ashamed of performance-wise, but we're still at a point in time where a V-8 exists, and we recommend taking advantage of it— particularly with the six-speed manual in the GT coupe. Sure, it's $10k and change more than the four, but as it's said, buy experiences, not things; with the Mustang GT you get both. You can also add a GT Performance package for roughly $5000 extra. That gives you 19-inch wheels, big Brembo calipers, a 3.73-geared Torsen differential, as well as some sweet appearance bits. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Mustang's base powertrain is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine rated at 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque mated exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It's a solid-performing setup, but the 5.0-liter V-8 is the heart of the Mustang. Rated for 480 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, it can send power through either the ten-speed automatic or, preferably, a six-speed manual. Ford says an optional performance exhaust increases output to 486 horsepower and 418 pound-feet. The Mustang Dark Horse is a track-focused step up from the GT that uses a 500-hp version of the 5.0-liter V-8. Essentially an evolution of the beloved Mach 1 of the previous generation, it has adaptive dampers and 19-inch Pirelli P Zero PZ4s, but gummy Pirelli Trofeo RS track-worthy tires are available via an optional handling package. Ford has improved the ride and handling balance with every generation, and the latest Mustang shows improvements across the board, including better steering feel and feedback. The Dark Horse's standard adaptive dampers go a long way to tame the brutality that is often part and parcel of performance vehicles wearing track-focused rubber. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, a Mustang GT with the performance exhaust system ripped to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds; the EcoBoost wasn't too far behind, hitting 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. At 4.1 seconds, the Dark Horse only shaved one second off the GT's time, but it went on to cross the quarter-mile marker in 12.5 seconds at 115 mph. The Dark Horse did shine during our recent 0-to-150-to-0 speed test with a time of 29.7 seconds, beating a Toyota Supra 3.0. View Photos Ford Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released fuel economy information for the 2026 Mustang yet, but last year's four-cylinder model was good for up to 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. With the V-8, those estimates fell to 16 mpg city and 24 highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, a GT model with a six-speed manual returned 24 mpg; the Ecoboost model with the automatic transmission delivered 32 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The Mustang's interior design is a mix of new and retro. We found the seats to be plenty supportive, and the standard 12.4-inch instrument cluster is a massive leap ahead of the previous car's. The configurable display can be customized to fit the needs of most red, white, and blue patriots, with selectable colors, gauges, and even a 'calm' screen that reveals only the most necessary details. If you're feeling nostalgic, the cluster can be configured to look similar to the 1987 Mustang's analog gauges—and a second analog throwback screen that takes its looks from the 1967 'Stang is available as an over-the-air update for all seventh-gen models. Ambient lighting and a driver's display adapt to whichever drive mode you've selected. Base Mustangs come with cloth seats and available micro-suede vinyl inserts, while the Premium level adds stitched bits and pieces from door trim to dashboard. Opting for the FX package on GT Premium models injects some extra retro flair, with plaid seat inserts and silver-and-blue contrast stitching. Ford has also introduced a Remote Rev function that allows the car's engine to blast up the RPMs with a simple click from the key fob while you admire the sounds from outside the car. View Photos Ford Infotainment and Connectivity An available 13.2-inch infotainment screen using Ford's Sync 4 software flows from the gauge cluster toward the center of the car behind a curved glass panel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on this system, and an optional wireless smartphone charger helps drivers reduce the clutter of charging cables. Amazon Alexa and Ford Streaming allow voice commands to replace knob-turning or button presses, and every Mustang comes with Ford Power-Up software capability, allowing for over-the-air updates for later software and vehicle function improvements. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features The Mustang is available with an impressive suite of driver-assistance technology named Ford Co-Pilot360.
