Off-duty cabbie raped woman he saw walking home

A taxi driver has been found guilty of raping a woman he followed home from a party.
Daniel Hayelom, 36, was convicted after a trial at Leeds Crown Court and will be sentenced on 2 May.
He was off-duty when he saw the victim, a woman in her 40s, walking along Dewsbury Road in Beeston. He parked up and took her into an alleyway at the side of a Poundland store where he attacked her.
Det Ch Insp James Entwistle, from West Yorkshire Police, said Hayelom targeted the woman as he saw her as vulnerable. "He could have helped her to get home safely but instead he chose to prey on her for his own gratification," he added.
Hayelom attacked the woman at about 06:00 on 22 October 2023, when CCTV showed him driving past and watching her from his vehicle before approaching her on foot.
He returned to his car after the rape. The woman continued home and later disclosed the incident to others who contacted the police.
Police identified Hayelom, of Clyde Approach, Armley, from the taxi registration and he was arrested later that day before being forensically linked to the offence by DNA evidence.
He denied charges of rape, sexual assault, and sexual assault by penetration but was found guilty on all counts following a trial.
After the verdict, Det Ch Insp Entwistle paid tribute to the victim: "We commend her for the courage and mental fortitude she has shown during the investigation and the court process that has resulted in his conviction."

Sex offender who followed girl on train jailed

A man who followed a 15-year-old girl on a train and made sexual comments to her has been jailed. Zainal Osman, 31, who was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order because of a previous offence, approached the girl on a train from York to Sherburn-in-Elmet at about 21:50 BST on 25 May, according to British Transport Police. Osman, of Barlby Road, Selby, pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual communication with a child and to failing to notify police of a change of address, as part of his requirements under the Sexual Offences Act. He was jailed for 32 weeks at York Magistrates' Court on 5 June. He must also sign the sex offenders register for 10 years. Officers said Osman was "visibly drunk" when he approached the girl. "He repeatedly professed his love for her, and despite the girl telling Osman her age he continued to make advances," a force spokesperson said. The girl called the police and a ticket inspector who saw what was happening intervened and helped the girl to safely leave the train. British Transport Police officers met the train at the next stop, Selby railway station, and Osman was arrested and taken into custody. Det Con Liam Brown said: "This was a frightening ordeal for the girl and it is because of her bravery that Osman has been brought to justice." ‘It's out of control': Shop owner hits out at vandals after window was smashed

A shop owner has said a group of youths are out of control after his store was vandalised on Shirley Road, causing approximately £1,000 worth of damage. Sandeep Kumar has owned News and Photos in Shirley for a little over a year but said the past two months is the worst he has ever known it, with a group of youths repeatedly targeting the store, as well as other businesses on the high street. Speaking to the Echo he said: 'In two months, the shop has had its window broken, I've had alcohol stolen, boxes of chocolates taken, the sign directly outside the entrance has been taken and moved further up the road. 'Before the last couple of months everything was fine but then all of a sudden something bad is happening in Shirley every day, it's out of control. 'Poundland have had many problems, other shops in the precinct have been targeted, Subway also had their window kicked, I've not known anything like it.' READ MORE: After refusing to let a group of teenagers but alcohol from his convenience store two weeks ago, Sandeep watched on as his shop window was kicked and then hit with a broomstick, causing in the region of £750 to £1,000 of damage. 'I think more needs to be done to prevent this kind of bad behaviour happening in the future,' Sandeep added. 'The police are aware of the issues we've been having, and I think they know what's happened to other businesses too. 'We're good people here and we really like the community and try and look after our customers. 'It's difficult when a group of people that are so young are causing damage and causing stress for people. 'It's hard enough sometimes running a business; nobody needs extra hassle. It's something you think about because you wonder when it's going to stop. 'I shouldn't have to worry about people coming in and stealing things. 'Even if the items are small, it all ads up and £20 worth of stock can disappear just like that. "There's only so much you're able to do. Day to day it is getting worse and worse."

Police plea to 'do right thing' over missing woman

People who know what happened to a missing woman who disappeared 25 years ago should "do the right thing", police have said. Kellie Pratt, who was 28 and a sex worker, was last seen outside The Rose pub in Queens Road, Norwich, on 11 June 2000. She took a call 10 minutes later and said she was with a "punter" - a person who remains unknown. Her body has not been found. "I believe the answer to her disappearance lies within the people she knew in Norwich, and it is those people I would ask to examine their consciences and to come forward and speak to us," said Norfolk Police's cold case manager, Andy Guy. "There are rumours circulating about what happened to Kellie, but in order to resolve this investigation, those with first-hand information would need to do the right thing. "After 25 years people's circumstances will have changed and I hope this milestone will be enough to encourage individuals with relevant information to have the courage to come forward." Ms Pratt, who was from Newcastle, had a chaotic lifestyle and knew only a "small bubble" of people in the Norwich area, Mr Guy had previously said. Police found the caller who rang her Nokia 6100 at 23:30 BST on the night she disappeared, but the client was never identified, and her phone was not found. No clues were uncovered during a search of her accommodation in Loddon. Mr Guy said the police investigation remained open and active. "Time has passed, but we continue to work on this case and follow up lines of inquiry to find who is responsible and to bring them to justice," he added.
