Ruth Buzzi, comedy sketch player on groundbreaking series ‘Laugh-In,' dies at 88
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ruth Buzzi, who rose to fame as the frumpy and bitter Gladys Ormphby on the groundbreaking sketch comedy series 'Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In' and made over 200 television appearances during a 45-year career, has died at age 88.
Buzzi died Thursday at her home in Texas, says her agent Mike Eisenstadt. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and was in hospice care. Shortly before her death, her husband, Kent Perkins, had posted a statement on Buzzi's Facebook page, thanking her many fans and telling them: 'She wants you to know she probably had more fun doing those shows than you had watching them.'
Buzzi won a Golden Globe and was a two-time Emmy nominee for the NBC show that ran from 1968 to 1973. She was the only regular to appear in all six seasons, including the pilot.
She was first spotted by 'Laugh-In' creator and producer George Schlatter playing various characters on 'The Steve Allen Comedy Hour.'
Schlatter was holding auditions for 'Laugh-In' when he received a picture in the mail of Buzzi in her Ormphby costume, sitting in a wire mesh trash barrel. The character was clad in drab brown with her bun covered by a hairnet knotted in the middle of her forehead.
'I think I hired her because of my passion for Gladys Ormphby,' he wrote in his 2023 memoir 'Still Laughing A Life in Comedy.' 'I must admit that the hairnet and the rolled-down stockings did light my fire. My favorite Gladys line was when she announced that the day of the office Christmas party, they sent her home early.'
The Gladys character used her purse as a weapon against anyone who bothered her, striking people over the head. On 'Laugh-In,' her most frequent target was Arte Johnson's dirty old man character Tyrone F. Horneigh.
'Gladys embodies the overlooked, the downtrodden, the taken for granted, the struggler,' Buzzi told The Connecticut Post in 2018. 'So when she fights back, she speaks for everyone who's been marginalized, reduced to a sex object or otherwise abused. And that's almost everyone at some time or other.'

Buzzi took her act to the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts in Las Vegas, where she bashed her purse on the heads of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Lucille Ball, among others.
Her other recurring characters on 'Laugh-In' included Flicker Farkle; Busy-Buzzi, a Hollywood gossip columnist; Doris Swizzler, a cocktail-lounge regular who got drunk with husband Leonard, played by Dick Martin; and an inconsiderate flight attendant.
'I never took my work for granted, nor assumed I deserved more of the credit or spotlight or more pay than anyone else,' Buzzi told The Connecticut Post. 'I was just thrilled to drive down the hill to NBC every day as an employed actor with a job to do.'
Buzzi remained friends through the years with 'Laugh-In' co-stars Lily Tomlin and Jo Anne Worley.
Born Ruth Ann Buzzi on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of Angelo Buzzi, a nationally known stone sculptor.

Most deep-sea divers will spend a lifetime underwater without finding treasure at the bottom of the sea. Not so for B.C. couple Cailin Lindsay and Maxwel Hohn, whose recent diving expedition included a treasure chest, a gold ring — and the promise of a lifetime of love. It was the culmination of an elaborate marriage proposal Hohn, an Emmy award-winning underwater cinematographer, told Global News he spent the better part of a year and a half planning. 'I knew it had to be somewhere that was very grand, it had to be like an epic kind of proposal, but I also had to catch her off guard by surprise, so I decided to do it in Galapagos,' he explained. 'I'd told her that I'd never proposed to her underwater, so she didn't really have this in the back of her head thinking that this would be the trip that would happen.' Lindsay and Hohn both grew up on the Sunshine Coast, and while both of them are lifelong divers, they never actually met until about eight years ago. Hohn already knew Lindsay's father through the diving industry, and during a chance encounter her brother dropped her name while 'playing cupid a little bit.' 'Maxwell kind of went, 'Wait a minute, your dad never mentioned anything about having a daughter,' so he reached out,' she said. 'We're both very adventurous people, and you know it's kind of been one big adventure from the get-go between the two of us, we had our first adventure dive date, and it's kind of never slowed down from there,' Lindsay said. It was only several years later, after the pair started working together on Hohn's wildlife cinematography business, that he decided it was time to take the plunge. 'And as most people know, doing that in front of your spouse is quite tricky.' As the clock ticked down to the big moment, Hohn said he got so nervous about whether it would work that he almost got cold flippers and called the whole thing off. 'But I had all these people committed to kind of helping me, you know that we had this treasure chest already hidden, so the ring was already underwater. I had four people who had these big laminated signs to say, 'Will you marry me?' They were hiding in this place behind a rock,' he chuckled. More nerve-wracking, when they got to the seafloor, Hohn said he began to question whether he could remember exactly where they'd stashed the ring. Lindsay said she was initially hesitant to open the chest, explaining she thought 'it's not ours to open,' but Hohn insisted. 'But Maxwell insisted I open it, so I finally opened the lid and sure enough, there's photos of us, there was a message in a bottle, and the ring,' she said. 'I was absolutely in shock from that point onwards … my mask started filling up with tears and I had to keep clearing it throughout the dive.' The pair have yet to come up for air enough to start planning their wedding. But they say it's a safe bet it will happen above sea level.

And the Emmy goes to … Phillies star Trea Turner? Documentary on Turner's ovation wins Emmy Award
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — And the Emmy goes to … Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner? Turner already won an NL batting title and a World Series championship ring in his 11-year MLB career. How about adding an Emmy Award to that trophy case? 'Trea Turner's an Emmy winner, absolutely,' sports documentary producer Kyle Thrash said. 'He definitely held it up like he owned it.' Turner may not actually have the award in hand to keep for good, but he got to hoist the real deal ahead of Friday's game against Toronto in a short celebration for the Emmy won for a best sports short documentary produced on the 2023 standing ovation credited with turning around his season. 'The Turnaround' won a sports Emmy in May and Thrash and Phillies fan Jon McCann — whose personal struggles with mental health and kinship with Turner were the heart of the film — attended the game to show off their new bling to Turner. 'Cuz, we did it, huh?! 'McCann said as he shook Turner's hand on the field after batting practice. 'Trea Turner, we share an Emmy together.' Turner read the inscription at the bottom of the Emmy and promised the fans he would wave to them in section 301 if he stole a base in Friday's game. 'We get to bring a trophy back to the ballpark tonight and share it with so many people that were involved in the standing ovation. It's pretty incredible,' Thrash said. Philly sports fans — often billed as some of the worst in sports — gave a slumping Turner standing ovations in at-bats throughout the weekend in an August 2023 series to show he had their full support. Turner was in the first season of an 11-year, $300 million deal with the Phillies but was batting just .238 with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs. He was even dropped to eighth in the batting order headed into that series against Kansas City. In three games over the weekend against the Royals, Turner went 4 for 12 with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs and he would eventually help lead the Phillies to the playoffs. Turner later helped pay for 'Thank You, Philly' digital billboards in the greater Philadelphia area. The documentary was produced by Higher Ground, the media company founded by former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama MCann, also known as 'The Philly Captain,' is a Philadelphia based YouTuber and was one of the fans — along with a Philly sports talk radio host — credited with rallying the fans to get behind Turner. 'During the ceremony, one of the award presenters said, 'wWen you go up against the Olympics, you lose.' So I kind of thought we already lost,' McCann said. 'We didn't.
