Sir Chris Hoy candidly opens up on ‘death sentence' cancer diagnosis and vows to prove ‘life goes on'

SIR CHRIS HOY vowed to prove "life goes on" for cancer sufferers before his return to race car driving.
The British Olympic legend revealed last October that he'd been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer the previous year.

The six-time gold medallist's diagnosis was a terminal one and doctors gave the Scot between two to four years to live.
Hoy, 49, is determined to live every day to its fullest, so much so that he decided to give race car driving a go again.
The Scot took part in the Dark Horse Stars class of the Mustang Challenge, which is on the bill of the famous Le Mans 24, this weekend.
And Hoy, who raced in the full Le Mans in 2016, hopes him living out his final days doing what he loves will inspire other cancer sufferers to do the same.
He told TNT Sports: "I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer almost two years ago now, and it shocked me, it rocked my world.
"It changed everything in one sentence, you're told that's not curable, but it's treatable.
"So suddenly, you have this death sentence, and it's terrifying, but I'm here to show that life goes on for many people in that situation."
After completing the race, a delighted Hoy took to Instagram to write: "What a few days at LeMans.

"After my cancer diagnosis 20 months ago I never imagined I'd be back racing here again, so when the opportunity arose courtesy of Ford performance and Jay Ward to take part in the Mustang Challenge Invitational I grabbed it with both hands.
"The circuit de la sarthe is a special place and the magic never fades, it really is a privilege to drive on this historic track.
Fans 'in floods of tears' as Sir Chris Hoy gives rousing speech at BBC SPOTY despite brave cancer battle
"As my team mate for the week, Chris Harris said, you never turn down the chance to drive at LeMans.
"Speaking of Chris Harris, it was a blast to hang out, talk cars and learn from him.
"What a job he did in Race 2, P12 from 31st on the grid, making 11 places in lap one amidst the carnage and bringing the Tour de 4 liveried #77 home in style!
"I managed P20 from the same grid position in race 1, very happy to have had some awesome battles throughout the 45-minute race and get a proper hit out after frustrations in qualifying.
I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer almost two years ago now, and it shocked me, it rocked my world."
Sir Chris Hoy
"Massive thanks to Academy Motorsport team for all their hard work and support, what a great bunch they are.
"And finally, best of luck to all the drivers in the 24 heures du mans, I wish you a safe and successful race."
Hoy will attempt to raise £1million for UK cancer charities with a charity bike ride in September.
He said: "The bike ride is to try and get as many people together as possible.
"Not just people suffering with cancer but anybody.
"To show we can keep on living, make the most of every day and live in the present, because that's all any of us have."

JJ Spaun overcomes nightmare start to win the US Open after incredible final round saw no other players finish under-par, with Scotland's Robert MacIntyre coming second

American JJ Spaun clinched the US Open on Sunday night in dramatic fashion on a day when the lead changed hands several times. Spaun endured a nightmare start, seemingly slipping out of contention after a string of bogeys, before clawing his way back to the top of the leaderboard as the likes of Sam Burns and Adam Scott continued to drop shots. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre finished second after a superb 68, while England's Tyrrell Hatton shared the lead with MacIntyre and Spaun heading into his final two holes, but dropped two shots. Drivers warned over MOT ‘advisory apathy'

One in six (17%) drivers who ignore MOT advisories experience a vehicle breakdown or crash as a result, a survey suggests. The RAC, which commissioned the poll, said it is 'vital drivers keep a close eye' on any issues raised. MOTs check a number of vehicle parts such as lights, seatbelts, tyres and brakes to ensure they meet legal standards. A vehicle with major problems will fail the test. Drivers often also receive a list of advisories for minor issues they are not required to resolve immediately. Examples include tyre tread close to the legal limit, brake pads almost worn out, and small oil leaks. Some 44% of the 1,460 drivers surveyed who had a vehicle put through an MOT in the previous year said the test resulted in one or more advisories. The warnings were not acted on by 54% of these respondents. Some 17% of this group went on to suffer a vehicle breakdown or collision as a consequence. Separate Department for Transport figures show 39 people were killed and a further 1,865 were injured in crashes on Britain's roads in 2023 in which vehicle defects were a contributory factor. The total number of casualties was the highest since 2018. RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader Nick Mullender warned that MOT advisories 'demand attention' because they mean a vehicle 'isn't in the best of health'. He said: 'Unfortunately, our research suggests there's a lot of troubling advisory apathy among drivers. 'Advisories indicate the potential for the vehicle to become unroadworthy in a matter of months or even weeks, depending on the nature of the issue and how often the vehicle is driven. 'It's crucial that drivers keep a close eye on any flagged items.' He added: 'An MOT is the most basic of roadworthiness checks, and no replacement for a proper service by a qualified mechanic.' – The survey was conducted by research company Online95 between May 23 and June 1.

Horse racing risks being DESTROYED if Reeves pushes ahead with tax raid on online gambling, MPs warn

HORSE racing risks being destroyed if Rachel Reeves pushes ahead with a tax raid on online gambling, MPs warned today. Senior Labour and Tory politicians urged the Chancellor not to whack up betting levies. They say it could wipe out 'one of the crown jewels of UK sport and culture'. The Treasury is considering a new flat-rate remote betting and gaming duty, under which horse racing bets would be taxed at the same rate as online gaming and slots — despite being less profitable. Such a move would discourage bookmakers from promoting the sport, leading to fewer bets, it is claimed. In a new report, the All Party Parliamentary Group for Racing and Bloodstock said the tax would bring job losses and economic pain for towns such as Doncaster, Cheltenham and Newmarket. Labour MP Dan Carden said: 'I'm calling on the Government to secure a fair funding model, protect jobs and allow horse racing to thrive for future generations.' And Tory MP Nick Timothy added: 'Horse racing is one of the crown jewels of British sport and culture. Nobody will forgive ministers if their decisions lead to its decline.' The MPs' concerns are backed by voters, with polling for the APPG showing two-thirds see horse racing as key to the identity of race meeting towns. The racing sector contributes £4.1billion to the economy and supports more than 85,000 jobs. 1
