3-year-old was suffocated at day care and lay dead for hours, Missouri mom says
A 3-year-old boy died in a Missouri day care when a worker applied weight to his body to make him sleep, according to a lawsuit filed by the child's mother.
The body of Conrad David Wade Ashcraft remained on the floor of Poppy's Playhouse in Park Hills 'for hours' Friday, May 16, legal representation for Tara Williams said in the wrongful death lawsuit.
Lacey Hardie, Conrad's aunt, described the incident as 'a horrific, callous, negligent, and senseless act that never should have happened,' KMOV reported.
Hardie said her nephew was a nonverbal boy who had autism, according to KSDK.
No charges have been announced as of May 21.
Poppy's Playhouse has not publicly commented on the fatal incident. McClatchy News attempted to reach out to the day care May 21, but calls were not answered.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Office of Childhood is conducting an investigation, KMOV reported, as is the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, which called the death a 'heartbreaking event.'
'We understand the community's grief and concern,' the City of Park Hills said in a statement. 'The city has full confidence in the independent investigation and believes that accountability is essential, regardless of the circumstances.'
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Park Hills Police Department, but the investigation was turned over to the sheriff's office because Poppy's Playhouse is owned by Park Hills Councilwoman Spring Gray.
Gray resigned from her city council position, Park Hills Mayor Stacey Easter said May 20.
The lawsuit did not name the worker who Williams has accused of killing her son.
'Defendant, through the use of lower extremities, applied weight and pressure to (the victim's) chest and/or abdomen, while he was laying down, in order to subdue (the victim) in an effort to force him to sleep,' according to the lawsuit filed against Poppy's Playhouse.
Conrad was suffocated, Williams said in the lawsuit, which accuses Poppy's Playhouse of failure to 'properly train and supervise its employees to insure safe interaction between staff and children.'
It was Williams who found her son's lifeless body when she came to pick up her son nearly four hours after his nap time began, Hardie told KSDK.
Williams is seeking compensation for the 'suffering' and 'aggravating circumstances' of her son's death, the lawsuit states.
According to an obituary, Conrad enjoyed swimming, spending time with his family, as well as the TV series 'Cocomelon' and movie franchises 'Toy Story' and 'Cars.'
'He was a beautiful child. He enjoyed being free and living his sweet little life,' Hardie told KTVI.
Park Hills is about a 65-mile drive southwest from St. Louis.

Little River shooting suspect was a member of the U.S. Navy, commander confirms
CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — It's been more than a week since a gunman opened fire at a chartered party boat in Little River during Memorial Day Weekend, injuring at least 11 people. More details have been released about the 19-year-old suspect arrested states away. U.S. Navy Records confirm Shawon Shamarion Williams, who was arrested outside the Great Lakes Naval Base in Lake County, Illinois, was a member of the Navy, and had enlisted on June 6, 2023. According to public Facebook posts from his mother, Jacklyn Bellamy, Williams enlisted just days after graduating from North Myrtle Beach High School. Commander Jessica L. McNulty, spokesperson for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, released the following statement to WBTW reporters: 'We can confirm that Hull Maintenance Technician Seaman (HTSN) Shawon Williams, assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Great Lakes, was arrested by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service on May 29, 2025. NCIS transferred custody of this Sailor to local authorities.' As of Monday morning, Williams is awaiting transportation from the Lake County Jail to the Jay Reuben Long Detention Facility, according to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Williams's mother, Bellamy hosted the party where the shooting occurred. Her Facebook page says she is from Longs. WBTW reporters found an address listed under her name on public records, but nobody was home, and it looked like nobody had been for a long time. WBTW reporters have been attempting to contact Bellamy since Thursday, when she told reporters in regards to her son, 'He is innocent, that's all.' Man who claims to be New Orleans jail escapee says plan wasn't his Show Caption Hide Caption New Orleans escapees arrested in Texas, police body cam footage shows Two New Orleans escapees Jermaine Donald and Leo Tate, were captured in Texas, according to Huntsville Police Department. Authorities are investigating whether one of the two inmates still on the run after last month's New Orleans jail escape posted a social media video, claiming the jailbreak wasn't his idea. On May 16, a total of 10 inmates escaped the Orleans Parish jail through a hole in a wall left by a ripped-away toilet and sink unit, officials said. Police have since captured eight of the men, leaving both Antoine Massey, 32, and Derrick Groves, 27, at large. An Instagram video posted Sunday, June 1 appears to have been from Massey, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune and local station WVUE. In the video, a man who identified himself as Massey dismissed rumors that he was the mastermind behind the jail break. a web site operated by the Times-Picayune, quoted a deputy U.S. marshal and another source, confirming authorities were investigating the video. "I'm one of the ones that was let out of Orleans Parish jail where they said I escaped, right?' he said speaking directly to the camera wearing the same facial tattoos as Massey. "They say that I broke out. I didn't break out. I was let out." The man in the video also proclaimed his innocence and said he fled the Orleans Parish jail to avoid being charged for a crime he did not commit, reported. "The reason why I left the jail is because these people were trying to give me a life sentence in both parishes for something that I did not do," the man said in the video. The post, which is no longer available as of Monday, June 2, was shared by an account named "@_007chucky" that is no longer searchable, WVUE reported. USA TODAY has reached out to the officials with the U.S Marshall, FBI and the New Orleans Police Department for comment. Man rejects statements from arrested jail maintenance worker The man in the video also said not to believe jail maintenance worker Sterling Williams, 33, the reported. Williams told police one of the inmates threatened to stab him with a homemade knife known as a "shank," according to an arrest affidavit for Williams. WVUE reported that the man said in the video that he never tried to "shank" Williams. Williams was arrested in connection with the prison escape and is accused of being in contact with the escapees alongside several others. He is charged with being a principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office. Williams allegedly admitted he shut off the water to a cell after one of the inmates requested so, allowing them to escape through the ripped out a toilet and sink unit, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said last month. Michael Kennedy, a lawyer for Sterling Williams, told USA TODAY last week that his client didn't know about the escape plan and only shut down the water because of a clogged toilet. Why was Massey in jail? Massey is charged with domestic abuse involving strangulation. He's also charged with theft of a motor vehicle, Orleans Parish records show. A warrant for his arrest in St. Tammany Parish shows he is wanted for second-degree rape, second-degree kidnapping, domestic abuse involving strangulation and violation of a protective order involving battery stemming from a November incident, a spokesperson for the parish sheriff's office confirmed with USA TODAY. He is wanted alongside Groves, who last October was convicted of two charges of second-degree murder and two charges of attempted second-degree murder in connection to a 2018 Mardi Gras shooting. Three of the escaped inmates were recaptured by the end May 16, the same day as the escape. A week later, two more were found. Within two weeks, authorities had caught all except Groves and Massey.
