Elderly inmate grateful for early release
KLUANG: Kluang Prison today released 72 inmates, including a senior citizen, Pak Man (not his real name), under the Ihsan MADANI Licensed Prisoner Release Programme (PBSL).
Sitting quietly with a smile that occasionally gave way to tears, Pak Man, 73, who has been detained since February this year on drug-related charges, did not expect his release to be brought forward from the original release date this December.
'I did not expect this. The prison authorities informed me that my release was brought forward due to several factors, including my good behaviour throughout detention,' he said when met at the PBSL Ihsan MADANI release programme held here today in conjunction with Aidiladha.
Pak Man, who has 14 grandchildren, was twice incarcerated in Melaka.
'Three times is enough... I don't want to repeat the same mistakes. While in prison, I missed my family dearly, especially during this year's Aidilfitri. I celebrated it alone. What I missed most was my wife's cooking, especially her rendang,' he said, adding that he is looking forward to celebrating Aidiladha with his wife, six children and all his grandchildren in Segamat.
Pak Man's wife, who wished to be known only as Mak Nab, 60, described her husband's release as the most precious gift, especially as she is currently battling stage four kidney disease.
'I don't ask for much... just that he doesn't repeat his past mistakes. For this festive season, all our children have returned to the village, and the most meaningful gift is having my husband by my side,' she added.
Meanwhile, Kluang Prison Deputy Director, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Jomison Gondikit, said that 69 male and three female inmates were released early under the programme.
He explained that the selection was meticulously carried out through two main phases, focusing on religious aspects and discipline during incarceration.
'This programme is more than a conditional release. It is a symbol of compassion, hope, and a second chance for those who have genuinely shown remorse and positive change,' he added.

Sisters' Aidiladha shopping trip derailed by expired road tax
Compiled by SHERIDAN MAHAVERA and BEH YUEN HUI The Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration for two sisters was dashed when their motorcycle was abruptly seized by the authorities while they were on their way to buy headscarves, reported Harian Metro. The siblings, aged 18 and 22, were travelling from Chempaka to the Wakaf Che Yeh bazaar in Kota Baru when they were stopped at a road block mounted by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in a special festive operation. Upon checking, the motorcycle's road tax was found to have expired in 2023. According to the elder girl, they did not realise that the road tax had expired as they rarely used the motorcycle. 'I have been working in Kuala Lumpur for a while now and my sister, who owns the bike, also works outside Kelantan. We did not realise that the road tax had expired,' the report quoted her as saying. She said she got back to her village on Thursday morning and rode with her sister to town to buy new tudung for Aidiladha. > It will be a solemn Aidiladha for three families in Kedah who lost their young sons in motorcycle crashes near Alor Setar on Thursday, the daily also reported. Three TVET students, all aged 19, were riding their motorcycles with another friend to their respective hometowns in the state when the accident occurred at KM49.4 of the North-South Expressway. Muhammad Habil Mohd Sobri, Muhammad Fahmi Jamel and Muhammad Arif Aifan Derani were on their way home to Gurun, Jeniang and Bukit Selambau, respectively. Permit applications drop but police to tighten firework monitoring
KOTA BARU: As Hari Raya Aidiladha approaches, the Kelantan police have noted a low number of permit applications from traders intending to sell fireworks and firecrackers - a stark contrast to previous festive seasons. Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said that despite the drop in applications, police would continue to monitor trading activities, especially in public areas such as roadside stalls, markets and night bazaars. "We remind traders with valid permits to strictly adhere to the conditions set. "Non-compliance could lead to legal action, including seizure of goods and possible revocation of permits," he said. Mohd Yusoff also advised parents to remain vigilant and monitor their children's activities during the festive season, especially to prevent accidents involving unauthorised or dangerous fireworks. "Public safety is our priority. While we want everyone to enjoy the celebrations, safety should never be compromised," he said. A check around several areas in the state today found that fireworks and firecrackers were already being sold, particularly in high-traffic spots such as the 24-hour Wakaf Che Yeh night market. During the previous Aidilfitri festive season, the Kelantan Health Department reported more than 30 cases of firework-related injuries, many involving children and teenagers. "Let's not repeat past mistakes. What may seem like harmless fun could end in tragedy," Mohd Yusoff added.

Kupang couple's Aidiladha preparations disrupted by surprise snake visitor
BALING: An elderly couple in Kampung Bukit Iboi, Kupang, received a nasty shock last night when a King Cobra slithered into their home as they were preparing for the Aidiladha celebration. Baling Fire and Rescue Station chief Zulkhairi Mat Tanjil said they received a call about the three-metre-long snake at 10.40pm yesterday. He said the team found the King Cobra behaving aggressively and slithering along a brick wall towards the roof vent. Their task was further complicated when the snake hid in narrow roof crevices, making it harder to capture. "Firefighters used specialised equipment to capture the snake, which took about 20 minutes. "The operation had to be carried out with great caution to prevent the snake from escaping," he said today. Zulkhairi noted that from Jan 1 until today, the department has received 200 emergency calls - 50 of which involved snake-catching incidents in the district.
