Chang Bingyu returns from match-fixing ban with back-to-back wins
Chang Bingyu has returned to the World Snooker Tour after the conclusion of his match-fixing ban and has kicked off his first season back as a professional with consecutive victories.
Still just 22 years old, Chang was given a two-year ban in June 2023 for fixing a match, which kept him out of snooker until December 2024 – backdated to his original suspension.
In April he comfortably won the Asia-Pacific Snooker Championship to book his place back on the professional circuit and has made a bright start to his return.
It didn't look like it was going to be a winning return when Chang fell 4-1 down to Daniel Wells in Wuhan Open qualifying on Monday, with the Welshman knocking in two centuries.
However, the Chinese youngster won the last four frames, with breaks of 84, 60 and 70 to dramatically claim a 5-4 win.
It was a more comfortable victory on Thursday as he beat India's Kreishh Gurbaxani 4-2 in British Open qualifying, with breaks of 118, 93, 64 and 70.
There is now every chance that Chang can make a big impression on the World Snooker Tour, maybe not to the same level, but as world champion Zhao Xintong has done since returning from his own ban.
Chang was a wildly talented junior player, winning the IBSF World Snooker Championship at just 16 years old, having made a maximum in tournament play at just 14.
His first stint on the professional tour did not yield many notable results, but has clearly spent his time away from the pro ranks working on his game, preparing for a return.
Chang admitted to fixing a match against Jamie Jones at the 2022 British Open, but did so as a result of pressure and influence from Liang Wenbo, who subsequently received a lifetime ban.
The Disciplinary Commission's findings read that Chang 'accepted that he on 28th September 2022 had fixed a snooker match that he was playing in.'
He gave evidence to the commission that he was called by Liang Wenbo on the morning of the match 'with a threatening tone' and told that Liang 'had placed a lot of money on his bet without my knowledge, for my match with Jamie Jones that evening.'
Chang 'reluctantly agreed' but said he never received the money he was told he would be given for the fix.
The independent tribunal's findings on Chang read: 'We have found that Chang fixed or contrived, or was a party to an effort to fix or contrive, the result or score of a snooker match on one occasion.
'We note that, at the time that his match fixing took place, Chang was aged 20. He was young and impressionable and under the influence of Liang, of whom he was scared. Chang has given evidence that he thought Liang would take action against him if he did not comply with Liang's demands. We accept that, in all probability, Chang would not have offended absent that element of threat. He was also suffering financial difficulties at the time, he has shown genuine remorse for his actions and he admitted his office at the earliest opportunity. There is no suggestion that Chang committed any betting offence.'
10 players were banned in June 2023 as part of the match-fixing investigation, with Zhao and Chang the first two to return to the professional circuit.
Zhao did not fix a match himself so received the shortest ban, but was punished for being party to another player fixing matches and betting on snooker.
Chang received the shortest ban of those found guilty of match-fixing, due to the circumstances surrounding his case as he was believed to be caught up in the scandal against his will.
The 22-year-old will look to keep up his 100 per cent record early in the season when he plays in the Championship League on July 3 against Ricky Walden, Steven Hallworth and Rob Milkins. Lionel Messi gives rare insight into his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo The insider told SunSport: "The owners know that he is the face of the league, he is the individual who attracts most of the superstars and the spotlight and they needed to keep him at all costs. 'He was conscious of this, and they had to 'cover him in gold' to keep him, giving him even more money, perks, and bonuses than in his first deal, as he is the face of the league and, in their opinion, the best player ever in the history of the game. 'Cristiano is getting pretty much whatever he wants, and with the ownership stake, they also want to keep him close to them as a force that can continue attracting players, sponsors, and the spotlight when he decides to retire. 'They had to give him everything he wanted and do everything to keep him, as they know that pretty much the entire present of the league, and part of its future, relies on CR7's shoulders and presence. 'If he left, that would have been a huge blow for us and for the whole league. He's our treasure now, and we have to keep him and protect him at all costs, even if he has to be paid more than ever. 'His importance and presence are vital for the league, and Al-Nassr know that he's their best ambassador—the individual who has made them known internationally and enabled them to do business in and out of Saudi Arabia.' 3

Tonight's Cardiff City news as Nathan Jones breaks silence on job links and winger finds new club The latest Bluebirds news from Cardiff City Stadium Nathan Jones, head coach of Charlton Athletic (Image: Getty Images ) Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Thursday, June 26. Nathan Jones asked about Cardiff job Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has spoken publicly for the first time about speculation linking him with the Cardiff City manager's job earlier this summer. The Welshman was one of the names under consideration as the Bluebirds searched for a new head coach following Omer Riza's departure, but the Bluebirds ultimately opted to appoint former Rochdale and ex-Manchester City EDS boss Brian Barry-Murphy. Speaking to Sky Sports News, Jones admitted his connection to the Welsh capital club, but reaffirmed his commitment to Charlton, with whom he won promotion to the Championship via the play-offs back in May. 'Cardiff is close to my heart,' Jones said. 'But this now is my job, my project, my passion. Nothing veered me from what I wanted to do.' The 51-year-old previously managed Luton Town, Stoke City and Southampton. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community Article continues below Winger signs for new club Eastleigh have completed the signing of former Cardiff winger Kieron Evans on a free transfer following his departure from the Bluebirds. The 23-year-old arrives at the Silverlake Stadium after the Spitfires saw off competition from EFL clubs to secure his signature. Evans will officially join the National League outfit on July 1 once his contract with Cardiff expires. Evans made 34 appearances on loan at Newport County last season and has amassed over 100 senior appearances during his career, including 12 for boyhood club Cardiff and spells with Linfield, Gateshead and Torquay United. The former Wales youth international, who came through the ranks at Cardiff from under-8 level, made his senior debut in 2021 against Nottingham Forest in the Championship. He also lifted the FA Trophy during a loan stint with Gateshead. Speaking after signing, Evans said: 'It feels amazing. I came here this morning and met everyone. Everything feels and sounds amazing. I can't wait to get started. "I had a few conversations with Kelvin [Davis] over the phone. It was the two-year plan, and seeing the vision of where they want to be – that sold me." He added: "Where we all want to be is in the EFL. If we can push into the play-offs this year, then I think that will be a good start. The way they want to play and win games this season really drew me in. "I've had three good loans at totally different clubs. Maturing as a man is the most valuable experience I've had. Winning the FA Trophy is the best moment of my career so far – winning on penalties was a great feeling." Evans described himself as a hardworking, attack-minded player: 'I will give 110 per cent. I like to work hard and get stuck in, but you'll see my qualities on the ball too. I'm comfortable off both feet, like to take players on, score goals and provide assists.' Arsenal U21s drawn against Cardiff Arsenal's Under-21s have been confirmed as the fourth and final team in Cardiff City's group for the 2025/26 Vertu Trophy, setting up an intriguing mix of youth and experience in Southern Group A. The young Gunners join the Bluebirds, local rivals Newport County and League One side Exeter City in what is now one of the standout groups of this season's competition. Arsenal are one of 16 Category One academies from Premier League clubs invited to enter under-21 teams into the tournament — formerly known as the EFL Trophy — alongside the 48 senior sides from League One and League Two. Cardiff's clash with Newport already promises to be a hotly-contested fixture, given the historical rivalry between the two Welsh clubs and the rarity of their competitive meetings. But the addition of a top-flight academy team like Arsenal adds another layer of intrigue for fans and further tests for Brian Barry-Murphy's youthful Bluebirds squad. The Vertu Trophy group stage sees 64 clubs split into 16 regional groups — eight in the North and eight in the South — with the top two sides from each progressing to the knockout rounds. Cardiff's group now pits them against a Premier League academy famed for developing talent, an ambitious Newport side from League Two, and Exeter, who have gained a reputation for producing their own young stars. It will be the first competitive meeting between Cardiff and Newport since a dramatic FAW Premier Cup tie in 2008, which ended in a penalty shoot-out win for County at Ninian Park. Their last league meeting came back in April 1988, when the Bluebirds ran out 4-0 winners. Fixtures and dates for Group A will be confirmed in due course, with matches set to begin later this summer. Bluebirds' 25/26 fixtures revealed Cardiff City's return to League One for the first time in over two decades begins with a high-profile home clash against Peterborough United on Saturday, August 2 (12.30pm kick-off), as Brian Barry-Murphy's side look to make a strong start in the third tier. The Bluebirds then travel to Port Vale and face home games against Rotherham United and Plymouth Argyle before the month is out, with tricky away trips to AFC. Wimbledon and Luton Town also lined up in August. Article continues below Over the festive period, Cardiff face Lincoln City away on December 20 before welcoming Exeter City to Cardiff City Stadium on Boxing Day. They round off the calendar year with a home tie against Stevenage on December 29, followed by a New Year's Day trip to Wycombe Wanderers. In the final stretch of the season, the Bluebirds will hope to be pushing for promotion as they take on Bolton, Reading and Northampton in April, before finishing the campaign away at Mansfield Town on May 2. Man United pre-season friendlies 2025: Full schedule and results
Manchester United face one of the most important pre-season periods in their recent history this summer as Ruben Amorim looks to turn things around at Old Trafford. United finished 15th in a dismal season after the Portuguese arrived in November, with the Europa League final loss to Tottenham condemning them to one of their worst seasons in living memory. And the club are heading to the USA for friendlies against Premier League opposition this summer as Amorim as he tries to get his side to adapt to his preferred formation, with the Red Devils also expected to be active in the summer transfer window as they try to help their manager. With the Premier League fixture release throwing together matches against Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea in the first five games of next season, pre-season preparations could be vital if Amorim wants to remain in good stead with fans and the club hierarchy early on.
