Thai hostages in ‘fair' health after Gaza release, Israeli doctors say
When the mother of one of the Thai hostages held in the Gaza Strip for over a year caught sight of her son on a Facebook livestream after his release Thursday, he had changed so much that she didn't recognise him at first.
Surasak Rumnao, 32, who was kidnapped from the southern Israeli town of Yesha on October 7, 2023, looked pale and puffy, said his mother, Khammee Lamnao.
'I was so happy that I could not eat anything. His father brought some food to me but I did not want to eat at all,' Khammee said on a video call with Associated Press after the release of her son.
Dozens of Israeli doctors, nurses and representatives from Israel and Thailand waved flags, sang and cheered Thursday as the five Thai hostages stepped off a military helicopter and entered a hospital outside Tel Aviv, where they will spend a few days undergoing medical tests and recuperating. Three Israelis were also released on Thursday, and Israel released 110 Palestinian prisoners in the exchange.

Second black box recovered from India crash site
Second black box recovered from India crash site At least 279 people, including 241 passengers and crew, were killed in the crash. Photo: NurPhoto via AFP Investigators in India on Sunday recovered the second black box from the London-bound Air India Boeing 787 that crashed in the city of Ahmedabad, killing at least 279 people, authorities announced. The cockpit voice recorder has been found, PK Mishra, a senior aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said in a statement. The flight data recorder was recovered on Friday, one day after the crash. Only one passenger survived among the 242 travellers and crew on board the Air India jet when it crashed Thursday into a residential area of Ahmedabad, killing at least 38 people on the ground. "The AAIB has launched a detailed investigation, and the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel probe under international protocols since the aircraft is American-made," Mishra said in a statement. "Officials confirmed that the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) have been located and secured." Multiple experts have said it is too soon to say why the jet crashed shortly after takeoff. (AFP)

Third night of violence hits Northern Ireland town
Third night of violence hits Northern Ireland town A masked protester walks away from burning bins on fire, during a third night of anti-immigration demonstrations in Ballymena, Northern Ireland. Photo: AFP Jamie Clarke reports Hundreds gathered on the streets of Ballymena in Northern Ireland on Wednesday, facing police armed with riot shields and water cannon on the third night of anti-immigrant demonstrations. The crowds eventually dispersed without a repeat of the chaotic scenes from the previous two nights, when houses and businesses were torched and 32 police officers were injured. The protests erupted in the northern town after the arrest of two teenagers accused of attempting to rape a young girl. The pair appeared on Monday in court, where they asked for a Romanian interpreter. Police have not confirmed the ethnicity of the teenagers, who remain in custody, but areas attacked on Monday and Tuesday included neighbourhoods where Romanian migrants live. Ministers from every party in the province's power-sharing executive strongly condemned "the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days". Residents had been "terrorised" and police injured, they said in Wednesday's joint statement, urging people to reject the "divisive" agenda being pushed by a "destructive" minority. In response to what they termed "racist thuggery", police deployed riot officers with dogs and have asked forces in England and Wales for help quelling the unrest. People living in Ballymena described "terrifying" scenes in which attackers had targeted "foreigners" over the previous days. Some people fixed signs to their houses indicating they were Filipino residents, or hung up British flags. Six people were arrested on Tuesday during the second night of riots in Ballymena and the surrounding area. (AFP)
