The 5 coolest new features coming to your iPhone in iOS 26
The company held its annual WWDC 2025 developer conference on Monday, where it announced a slew of new features across its suite of products and services, including several standouts coming to the iPhone.
The new iPhone software, iOS 26, will be pre-loaded on the iPhone 17 this fall, and you'll be able to update your existing iPhone around then, too.
We rounded up our favorite announcements, focusing on the new iOS 26 features we found to be the coolest or most useful.
Let's dive in.
The new look: Liquid Glass
While it's not exclusive to the iPhone, Liquid Glass was the main event at WWDC 2025.
It's Apple's new design language for its software and the company's first major software redesign for the iPhone since iOS 7. It extends across Apple's other devices too: It'll be available later this fall in software updates for Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.
With a translucent, glass-like aesthetic, the Liquid Glass design adapts in different environments based on content and context and is coming to everything from switches and sliders to the iPhone's home screen and control center.
More Visual Intelligence features
If you have an iPhone that's powerful enough to run Apple Intelligence, there are some new Visual Intelligence features coming that can tell what's on your screen to help you take various actions.
If you're scrolling on social media, for example, and you find a product you like, you can press the same buttons you'd press to take a screenshot, and a new option will offer Visual Intelligence capabilities, including searching sites like Google and Etsy for the product to buy. (Android users familiar with Google's Lens AI tool have enjoyed a similar feature for a bit now.)
You can also ask ChatGPT about what you see on your screen, or if you come across an event, you can add it to your calendar, prepopulated with the date, time, and location.
Big improvements to your group chats
Messages also get an upgrade in iOS 26. Typing indicators — the bubble with three dots that lets you know when someone is typing — are coming to group chats; these were previously only available in one-to-one messages between two people.
And look out, Venmo: You can also start requesting, sending, and receiving Apple Cash in group chats.
In addition, you'll soon be able to create polls and set backgrounds for a chat, whether you choose from a preset offering or use AI to make a custom one in Apple's AI image generator, Image Playground.
In messages, you can start making Frankenmoji (not an Apple term, that's just ours) to combine multiple emoji or Genmoji, and even a text description of anything else you want to add, to create a unique one.
Help dealing with pesky phone calls
The Phone app is getting an overhaul with iOS 26.Apple
The Phone app will look a lot different in iOS 26. Instead of the call log, voicemails, and favorites being under separate tabs, they're combined to show who's calling, what they're saying, and who you might want to call.
There's also the Call Screening feature, which essentially answers unknown calls for you to determine whether or not they're spam. If the transcript looks legit, you can answer the call yourself.
Hold Assist, another new feature, can detect hold music on customer service calls and keep your spot in line until an agent is available to help, so you don't have to sit there waiting for them.
New travel tools
Your Apple Wallet will now store your ID if you live in a participating state.Apple
Your Apple Maps app is getting smarter. As you move about, Maps will learn your routine and suggest better routes each day. It will know your preferred route and adapt to changes to your daily commute.
With the new Visited Places feature, you don't have to rack your brain for that restaurant you went to but can't remember the name. Your iPhone will detect where you are and store it in case you need to come back to it later.
As for air travel, boarding passes are getting a new look, and there will be in-airport directions to find your gate.
There are also new features to help get you through TSA with fewer physical documents in your hand. In nine participating states, you'll be able to store your ID in your Apple Wallet.

We've Finally Reached the End of the Road For Intel Macs
MacOS Tahoe will be the final version of macOS to support some specific Intel-based Macs. The new macOS Tahoe ships in the fall. It's the last version of macOS to provide support to Apple computers with Intel processors. Courtesy of Apple Today, Apple announced the latest version of its Mac operating system, macOS Tahoe, sporting a handful of new features and apps. The update will also, however, mark the final substantial version of macOS to be supported on Intel-based Macs. The final supported Intel-based Macs that will receive macOS Tahoe include the following models: MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports), iMac (27-inch, 2020) and Mac Pro (2019). That means if you own one of these Macs, you'll still get access to all the features in the update later this fall when macOS Tahoe launches. The only exception is that anything that relies on Apple Intelligence won't be available, as those features are restricted to Apple Silicon machines only. It's been five years since the beginning of the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon. At the time, Apple stated that it would 'continue to support and release new versions of macOS for Intel-based Macs for years to come.' Intel-based Macs older than 2019 have already stopped receiving software updates, and it's now time for the last generation of models to get removed from the list. Fortunately, Apple will provide security upgrades for these Intel-based Macs for three more years. That's pretty solid for machines that are already over five years old. I've recommended against buyers purchasing Intel-based Macs for years already. The jump from Intel Macs to even the initial M1 Macs is a huge leap in terms of performance and battery life, though I'm sure some folks will have been seduced by the Intel Macs' ultra-discounted prices in recent years. Now we know for sure where the end of the road is, which will hopefully convince some to at least buy an M1 MacBook Air. Apple will also be winding down Rosetta, the company's emulation layer for running non-native apps on Apple Silicon. It was key to Apple's early success in transitioning to its own chips. For anything other than old games, the software provided by Apple will only be available through macOS 26 and macOS 27. More than anything, it's another way for Apple to encourage developers to finish transitioning their apps to run natively on Apple Silicon.

ChatGPT Voice just got more human — and it now translates in real time
Just days after I tested Gemini Live vs. ChatGPT Advanced Voice in a 5-round voice-off, OpenAI unveils a major upgrade to ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode — and it's one of the clearest signs yet that talking to an AI assistant might soon feel as natural as chatting with a friend. For paid users, the upgrade brings noticeably more fluid, expressive and human-like speech. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT now uses subtler intonation, realistic cadence and even emotional inflection — including sarcasm and empathy. If you've ever felt that ChatGPT sounded 'off' or too robotic, this update might change your mind. Beyond sounding better, ChatGPT Voice is also getting a major utility boost: real-time language translation. Given that real-time translation was just announced as part of Apple Intelligence at WWDC — and ChatGPT now integrates with Siri — the timing likely isn't a can now ask ChatGPT to translate between languages on the fly, and it'll continue translating automatically until you tell it to stop or switch. That means you could speak English while traveling in Brazil and have ChatGPT translate your words into Portuguese, and then listen as it translates your waiter's response back into English. No switching apps or fumbling through menus. Just an ongoing, seamless conversation powered by AI. Whether you're traveling, navigating a multilingual workplace or just trying to learn a new language, this new translation feature could be a game-changer. The updated Advanced Voice is available now to all paid ChatGPT users, across all markets and platforms. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Just tap the microphone icon in the message composer to activate Voice. This builds on previous updates earlier this year that reduced interruptions and improved accent performance. There are still a few bugs to be aware of. OpenAI says that some voices may experience slight dips in audio quality or tonal consistency, including odd changes in pitch. In rare cases, users may also hear unintended sounds, like fake ads or random background music. OpenAI is actively working to fix these 'hallucinations' in future updates. But overall, this upgrade marks a big step forward in making ChatGPT a more natural, useful voice assistant.

Apple tvOS 26 adds AirPlay speaker support, karaoke mode, and better user profiles
tvOS 26, the latest operating system update for Apple TV hardware, has been unveiled in the roster of announcements made by Apple at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). We're currently on tvOS 18, so the new tvOS 26 name may confuse some users who were watching out for tvOS 19 announcements. As with the iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS, tvOS has also been renumbered to '26' to reflect the release cycles for Apple's device operating systems, in this case September 2025 to September 2026. The most noticeable change is that tvOS 26 has a new look. UI elements have been visually refreshed with a glossy 'Liquid Glass' design language that aligns with visionOS as part of Apple's goal of unifying the user experience across all of its operating systems. Any AirPlay-enabled speaker can be designated as the permanent default speaker for Apple TV devices, a feature that was previously restricted to select Apple HomePod models. This will make it easier to get better sound from Apple TV boxes that are connected to TVs without wired sound systems attached. The update also includes a karaoke mode, called Sing in Apple Music, that will let you use your iPhone as a mic as song lyrics appear on the TV, including translation and pronunciation cues. You'll also be able to queue up songs from your iPhone. Apple says that Apple TV users will have the choice to automatically display profiles when the device wakes up to quickly jump back into their personal recommendations, watchlists, and Apple Music playlists. A new API will let developers link app logins to an Apple account, making it easier to sign into streaming services when setting up a new device. It will also support the new multiplatform Games app that's coming to iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices. The app will aggregate Apple Arcade games as well as titles downloaded from the App Store, providing users with a single platform to launch games and view editorial content, leaderboards, and in-game achievements. The tvOS 18 update introduced real-time onscreen insights about live-action Apple TV Plus movies and shows, AI-enhanced subtitles, and new screensavers for Apple TV 4K when it rolled out in September last year. The tvOS 26 update will be available today in developer beta, with a public beta in July and a full release in the fall.
