Houston Catholics attend special Mass to pray for Pope Leo XIV

A special Mass was held on Monday for Houston Catholics to pray for Pope Leo XIV.
The Mass was organized by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
Those who attended Mass shared excitement and hopes for the new pope.
HOUSTON - On Monday, many people gathered at the Co - Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Downtown Houston for a special Mass to pray for Pope Leo XIV.
A crowd of Catholics took time out of their day to hear Archbishop Joe S. Vásquez share a message praying for the new pope, but also sharing how they can help carry out his mission and the mission of the church.
The archbishop also thanked Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, archbishop emeritus of Galveston-Houston, who was one of the cardinal electors participating in the papal conclave which elected Pope Leo XIV.
What they're saying
Many of those who were present Monday shared their excitement and hopes for the new pope.
"The day before, I did pray with my friend," Tao Truong said. "We prayed to the Lord that they give us a United States-born [pope] and, second, we saw the pope's history. He is so religious, he has loved God since he was little."
"When they announced he was American everybody screamed, 'USA, USA.' It's good to have the first pope from here," said Mark Nuar.
Many Catholics also told us they are excited about the work of Pope Leo and how his work will impact the church.
"It touched me alot because of what Leo is going to be doing for the world," said Ernest Duran." Now that we have an American pope, he's going to be opening doors."
"Wanted to come and pray for him and for peace," said Litinia McDonald. "It's very exciting, actually; in elementary school, I went to St. Leo the Great, so I was excited for that part. But he is very into the culture now, and social media, so he is up-to-date with what is going on. So I'm excited about him being a part of the new generation."
"Everybody wants peace, so we pray to the lord that peace coming soon," Truong said.
What's next
Many Catholics at Mass on Monday also said they are excited to watch the pope's inaugural Mass on Sunday, May 18, at 10 a.m.

King, Maine's independent senator, is a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a longtime advocate of protecting Afghans who supported and protected American troops, including many who live in Maine. "We write with deep concern about the Department of Homeland Security's termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take effect on July 14, 2025," the letter states. "This decision is devastating for resettled Afghan nationals in the United States who have fled widespread violence, economic instability, challenging humanitarian conditions, and human rights abuses in their home country." The letter continues, "Many of these Afghans fearlessly served as strong allies to the United States military during the war in Afghanistan, and we cannot blatantly disregard their service." The senators "respectfully ask that you redesignate Afghanistan for TPS to ensure Afghan nationals in the U.S. are not forced to return to devastating humanitarian, civic, and economic conditions," the letter states. Christiane Amanpour Now Treats Travel To U.S. 'As If I Was Going To North Korea'
British journalist Christiane Amanpour said she treats travel to the U.S. under President Donald Trump 'as if I was going to North Korea.' The longtime CNN correspondent talked about her experience flying to the U.S. on her podcast, 'The Ex Files.' 'I must say I was afraid,' Amanpour told her co-host and ex-husband, Jamie Rubin, on Wednesday's episode. Amanpour was traveling to the U.S. last week to give a speech at Harvard University, which has come under increased attacks by Trump, including revoking the university's ability to enroll international students. Trump has also ramped up his attacks on immigrants, using agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to snatch people off the streets and imprison them without due process. And on Thursday, Trump announced that citizens of 12 countries would be banned from visiting the U.S. and seven others that would face restrictions. 'I'm a foreigner,' Amanpour said. 'I don't have a green card. I'm not an American citizen. I'm fairly prominent, and I literally prepared to go to America as if I was going to North Korea. I took a burner phone, Jamie. Imagine that. I didn't take a single … not my mobile phone, not my iPad, nothing, and I had nothing on the burner phone except a few numbers.' Amanpour said she also spoke to CNN security about what precautions to take. 'I've heard that many, including British citizens, have been stopped at the border and been questioned for hours and hours and hours,' she said. Thankfully, Amanpour said she went through airport security without any issues. 'I was welcomed,' she said. 'The immigration officer at Boston, where I came in, could not have been nicer. Huge sigh of relief I breathed.'

Kids' Passports Expire Much Faster Than Adults—What Travelers Need to Know
Families planning an international trip may want to carefully check their child's passport expiration date. While many travelers understand that a regular United States passport is valid for 10 years, the policy isn't the same for a child's passport. In fact, the U.S. Department of State, which manages the passport process, states that passports for children under the age of 16 are valid for half of the normal term: just five years. To be on the safe side, parents should plan on replacing a child's passport at least every three and a half years, as many countries require more than six months of passport validity to be able to use the document for entry to their country. The State Department has a helpful checklist for parents who are in the process of replacing or obtaining a first-time passport for a child under the age of 16. Some of the special instructions include providing evidence of U.S. citizenship and both parents submitting information and consent for the passport. "Both parents or guardians must approve that we can issue a passport to a child, and go with the child to apply in person," the State Department's website explains. The policy further explains that renewals cannot be completed through the DS-82 form, and instead have to be processed as new passports. The current processing time for a routine passport application is four to six weeks, and expedited service takes two to three weeks. For many families, the five-year expiration can cause panic and disruption before flights. 'The plans were booked last minute and I noticed today his passport is expired!' one parent shared in a Reddit post. Another family described the "urgent situation" in which their vacation to Punta Cana was completely ruined when they realized their child's passport was two months expired, sharing in another Reddit post, 'we had to rebook and make an appointment for expedited passport renewal at a passport agency, this sucks!' Frequent travelers may also consider applying for a Global Entry membership for their child, which can provide expedited airport security screening. The process similar to what an adult would do to get Global Entry membership, including the in-person interview. However, children under the age of 14 do not need to submit fingerprints. The State Department regularly offers "Special Passport Acceptance Fairs" as ways for first-time passport applicants to receive special help and insights on the application process.
