Pedal Your Way To Health: 10 Benefits Of Cycling Everyday

NDTV2 days ago

Across India, a silent health revolution is unfolding, on two wheels. Once seen as a modest mode of transport, the bicycle is regaining ground as a powerful tool for fitness, sustainability, and mental well-being. From CEOs to daily wagers, more Indians are embracing cycling not only for convenience but also for the health benefits of cycling. The World Health Organisation (WHO) supports active commuting, including cycling, as a means to reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Could daily cycling be your key to a healthier and more balanced life?
Transformative health benefits of cycling everyday
Whether you cycle to work, school, or the local market, this low-impact, high-reward activity offers numerous benefits that extend beyond fitness. Here's how cycling can transform your physical and mental health while contributing to a cleaner environment.
1. Improves cardiovascular health
Cycling is an aerobic activity that gets your heart pumping and lungs working. According to the British Heart Foundation, cycling everyday reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases by up to 50%.
2. Aids weight management
Just 30-60 minutes of cycling can burn between 300-600 calories, depending on intensity. It also boosts your metabolism, helping in healthy weight loss and preventing obesity-related conditions.
3. Boosts joint health
Cycling is gentler on the knees and joints compared to running. It's especially beneficial for those with arthritis or recovering from injury, improving mobility without high impact.
4. Enhances mental clarity
Physical activity like cycling triggers the release of endorphins, natural mood lifters. It can reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. A Harvard Medical School study also links cycling everyday with improved cognitive function.
5. Builds muscle strength
Cycling engages the legs, glutes, and core muscles, gradually increasing strength and endurance. Over time, it also enhances posture and balance.
6. Strengthens the lungs
By improving breathing rhythm and oxygen intake, cycling enhances lung capacity. This is especially valuable in polluted urban areas, as it helps the body filter and process air more efficiently.
7. Improves balance and coordination
Cycling everyday hones reflexes and stabilises the body, skills that are particularly useful for older adults to prevent falls and injuries.
8. Increases immunity
Moderate daily exercise like cycling supports a stronger immune system. Research by the University of Bath shows that regular cyclists have lower instances of common illnesses.
9. Lowers risk of chronic illness
Daily cycling reduces the risk of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers. The WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, which cycling easily fulfils.
10. Promotes environmental and economic health
Choosing a cycle over a car helps reduce CO₂ emissions, air pollution, and fuel expenses. This supports a healthier planet and saves money in the long run, an indirect but vital health benefit.
Cycling everyday isn't just about fitness, it's a holistic approach to living better. Backed by global health organisations and celebrated by people across economic backgrounds, it bridges health, affordability, and environmental responsibility. So, whether it's a short ride to the grocery store or a daily commute, every pedal stroke is a step toward a longer, stronger, and cleaner life.

Kozhikode rolls out action plan to become age-friendly city

Close on the heels of its recent recognition from the World Health Organisation (WHO) — with membership in the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities, Kozhikode is steadily progressing towards becoming a truly age-friendly city. An action plan to achieve this goal was recently approved by the Kozhikode Corporation Council and is expected to be fully implemented within the next four months. The action plan, aligned with the eight key directions recommended by the WHO, will be carried out in collaboration with the Samanvaya programme. It is divided into several focus areas: elderly health, psychosocial support, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, transportation, housing, and outdoor spaces and buildings. One of the main objectives is to enhance healthcare access for everyone aged 60 and above. This includes providing doorstep medical services, establishing geriatric wards in hospitals, supplying necessary medical equipment, and ensuring lab services are made available at home. To provide psychosocial support, the plan incorporates therapeutic counselling, psychiatric services, telemedicine facilities, dementia clinics, and recreational outings for the elderly. Senior Citizens' Clubs will play a key role in promoting social participation. Skilled professionals among the elderly will be engaged in various activities. Artistic and cultural groups, literary events, competitions, and sports meets are also part of the plan. Various initiatives, including legal awareness campaigns addressing injustices faced by the elderly, senior help desks at police stations, and legal adalats, are also included. Senior citizens will also be encouraged to take up entrepreneurship. Pension disbursement will be ensured, and those interested will be included in employment guarantee schemes. Efforts will be made to provide training in new technologies, innovative ideas, and research. Data gathered through surveys conducted under the Samanvaya programme will be used to streamline the action plan. It may be noted that Kozhikode city was declared an 'Elderly Friendly' city in 2022, and the initiatives undertaken at that time played a crucial role in securing WHO recognition.

This Is India's Only State With Zero COVID-19 Cases Amid Nationwide Surge

As several Indian states witness a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections, Sikkim has emerged as the only state in the country with zero active cases, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. India's active COVID-19 caseload rose to 3,395 on Saturday, marking a dramatic spike of over 1,200% from just 257 cases reported on May 22. In the last 24 hours alone, the country logged 685 new cases and four deaths. Despite this surge-driven largely by states like Kerala (1,336 active cases), Maharashtra (467), and Delhi (375), Sikkim has not reported a single active infection, setting it apart in a nationwide rise. Other states with growing case counts include Gujarat (265), Karnataka (234), West Bengal (205), Tamil Nadu (185), and Uttar Pradesh (117). Even smaller regions like Puducherry (41) and Haryana (26) are seeing a noticeable uptick. In contrast, Sikkim's ability to remain COVID-free in the current wave is being seen as a significant public health achievement. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has flagged two new subvariants- LF. 7 and NB.1.8.1-as "Variants Under Monitoring." While they have been linked to a rise in cases in some countries, the UN health body has stated that there is no evidence yet of increased severity, and current vaccines remain effective against symptomatic and severe disease. India has reported 26 COVID-related deaths in 2025 so far, as health officials continue to monitor evolving variants and case trends.

Odisha reports first Covid death of the season

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha reported its first Covid-related fatality of the season after an 85-year-old man from the capital city succumbed at his residence on Saturday. Sources said swab samples of the elderly man was collected and sent for tests after he developed symptoms and fell sick. His test reports confirmed that he was positive for SARS-CoV2. Odisha has reported a total of eight Covid cases in May. The tally includes five from Bhubaneswar, two from Cuttack and one from Khurda. Other patients are in stable condition and are recovering well, sources said. Director of public health Dr Nilakantha Mishra said he has been informed of the death and has asked officials to inquire into it. 'An audit will be conducted to ascertain whether the elderly man had comorbidities, and the primary cause of his death,' Mishra told TNIE. So far, 3,395 Covid cases and 22 deaths have been reported in May in the country. In Odisha, recent genome sequencing has identified LF.7.9 and XGF as the dominant sub-variants in circulation. WHO has classified these as variants under-monitoring. Health secretary Aswathy S urged people to remain vigilant but not panic. She emphasised that the circulating variant has not led to any serious complications among patients so far.
