Gaza rescuers say three babies among 11 killed in Israel strike

The Hindu03-05-2025

Gaza's civil defence agency said on Saturday that an overnight Israeli strike on the Khan Yunis refugee camp killed at least 11 people, including three babies up to a year old.
Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal reported 11 killed "after the bombardment of the Al-Bayram family home in the Khan Yunis camp" in southern Gaza at around 3:00 a.m. (0000 GMT).
Mr. Bassal said eight of the dead had been identified and were all from the same extended family, including a boy and girl, both one-year-olds, and a month-old baby.
An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed the strike saying the attack targeted a "terrorist Hamas member", without giving further details.
At the scene, rescue workers and residents searched through the rubble with their bare hands, illuminating the destruction with hand-held torches.
One rescuer carried the lifeless body of an infant from the wreckage, footage captured by an AFP journalist showed.
Fayka Abu Hatab, a resident in a nearby building, said she "saw a bright light, then there was an explosion, and dust covered the entire area".
"We couldn't see anything, it all went dark," Abu Hatab said.
"All of our windows were destroyed, our rooms were destroyed, the neighbours' house was destroyed," she added.
Israel resumed its military offensive in Gaza on March 18 after a two-month truce in its war against Hamas, which was triggered by the Palestinian militant group's October 7, 2023 attack.
The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said on Saturday that at least 2,396 people have been killed since Israel resumed its campaign in Gaza, bringing the overall death toll since the war broke out to 52,495.
On Friday the civil defence agency said Israeli strikes killed at least 42 people across the war-ravaged territory, which has been under a total Israeli blockade since March 2.
Israel halted aid deliveries to Gaza, saying Hamas had diverted supplies. Israel says the blockade is meant to pressure the militants into releasing hostages held in the Palestinian territory.
UN agencies have urged Israel to lift restrictions, saying that Gazans were experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe and warning of famine.

'Israeli fire kills 23 people in Gaza, many at aid site'

CAIRO: Israeli fire and airstrikes killed at least 23 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, most of them near an aid distribution site operated by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, local health authorities said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Medics at Al-Awda and Al-Aqsa Hospitals in central Gaza areas, where most of the casualties were moved to, said at least 15 people were killed as they tried to approach the GHF aid distribution site near the Netzarim corridor. The rest were killed in separate attacks across the enclave, they added. There has been no immediate comment by the Israeli military or the GHF on Saturday's incidents. The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of aid distribution which the United Nations says is neither impartial nor neutral. The Gaza health ministry said in a statement on Saturday at least 274 people have so far been killed, and more than 2,000 wounded, near aid distribution sites since the GHF began operations in Gaza. Later on Saturday, the Israeli military ordered residents of Khan Younis and the nearby towns of Abassan and Bani Suhaila in the southern Gaza Strip to leave their homes and head west towards the so-called humanitarian zone area, saying it would forcefully work against "terror organizations" in the area. The war in Gaza erupted 20 months ago after Hamas-led militants raided Israel and took 251 hostages and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, on October 7, 2023, Israel's single deadliest day. Israel's military campaign since has killed nearly 55,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza, and flattened much of the densely populated strip, which is home to more than two million people. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Most of the population is displaced, and malnutrition is widespread. Despite efforts by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar to restore a ceasefire in Gaza, neither Israel nor Hamas has shown willingness to back down on core demands, with each side blaming the other for the failure to reach a deal.

Soon, Cama Hospital to offer full range of IVF services

Mumbai: After offering basic fertility treatment for the last 18 months, the state govt-run Cama Hospital near CST will soon upgrade to provide complete in-vitro fertility (IVF) treatment for women for free. "We have got permission to start IVF treatment such as embryo implantation, and are in the process of giving final touches to our laboratory," said Medical Superintendent Dr Tushar Palve. The complete IVF services, he added, should start within a month. In April 2024, the hospital became the first govt hospital in the city to offer basic fertility treatment such as intrauterine insemination (or artificial insemination in which sperm is placed directly into a woman's uterus) and ovulation induction (use of medication to stimulate the ovaries to release one or more eggs). Over 100 women were provided such treatment, resulting in 17 pregnancies since April 2024. Between April and December 2024, 78 women were provided treatment that resulted in eight pregnancies. "In 2025, we treated 35 women and nine were urine-positive pregnancies," said Dr Palve. As women from other parts of the state and neighbouring states also attend Cama Hospital's infertility treatment OPD, deliveries in many cases didn't take place in the hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Efficient Cleaning for Compliant Warehouses SearchMore Learn More Undo "In just over five months, the Cama centre recorded 379 IVF outpatient consultations, reflecting growing trust in our fertility treatments and specialised care," said a state medical education department official. "Cama is the first state govt hospital to bridge the gap between technology and accessibility, making the dream of parenthood possible for many," he added. The country's second test-tube baby—and the state's first—was born in BMC-run KEM Hospital, Parel in 1986. After a gap of 39 years, the hospital will soon start a full-fledged IVF clinic. While KEM's neighbouring Wadia Hospital has an IVF clinic, civic-run Sion Hospital is also likely to start one soon. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
