Odisha govt clarifies no timber from Puri's Jagannath shrine used in Digha temple
The Odisha government on Monday (May 5, 2025) said surplus sacred timber used in sculpting the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra was not sourced from the Puri Jagannath Temple.
For the past few days, a controversy has been simmering over allegations that surplus sacred timber from the Jagannath Temple in Puri was used to carve idols for the new Jagannath Temple in Digha. The issue has drawn strong objections from intellectuals, religious leaders, and devotees alike.
Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan clarified that no surplus timber from the Puri temple was used elsewhere. He cited findings from an investigation conducted by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, which found no evidence to support the allegation.
The controversy began after Ramakrishna Dasmohapatra, a prominent sevayat (traditional priest) of the Puri temple, claimed in an interview with a Bengali TV channel that timber not used during the Nabakalebara ritual had been sent to Digha.

However, Mr. Harichandan said that Maharana Sevaks — responsible for crafting the idols during Nabakalebara —categorically denied that any leftover timber had been transported elsewhere. Sudarshan Maharana, who sculpted the idols for the Digha temple, also confirmed that the wood used did not come from Puri.
'Mr. Dasmohapatra later told the investigating team that his statement was a slip of the tongue,' the minister added.
The Minister said the State government would formally request the West Bengal government to drop the name 'Jagannath Dham' for the newly built temple in Digha. Devotees have objected to the use of the term 'Dham', pointing out that, in Hindu tradition, there are only four major religious centres referred to as Dhams, with Puri being one of them.

There are reports suggesting that the West Bengal government has already removed the word Dham from official references to the Digha temple.
It is to be noted that over 50 sevayats from Puri had attended the consecration ceremony of the Digha Jagannath temple, which has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore.

Why TMC's appointment of a Sufi shrine cleric is a significant move as Bengal politics simmers
As the political rhetoric in West Bengal intensifies in the run-up to the Assembly elections next year with the BJP looking to push a polarising narrative, the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) response has been to shore up its position among the minority community, and this is reflected in its recent decision to appoint Pirzada Kasem Siddiqui of the powerful Sufi shrine of Furfura Sharif a state general secretary. Siddiqui's appointment comes at a time when the BJP has been trying to politically gain from painting the Mamata Banerjee-led party as 'anti-Hindu' over the situation in Bangladesh, Murshidabad communal violence, the Sharmistha Panoli case, and this week's violence on the outskirts of Kolkata between two communities. Though the TMC has no reason to be apprehensive about its Muslim vote shifting — the party has been the minority community's choice since the 2009 Lok Sabha elections — given the BJP's strategy in the run-up to the elections, the party wants to ensure it has a lock on the community's support and does not want to provide a smaller outfit such as Indian Secular Front (ISF) a way in to muddy the waters. Floated by Furfura Sharif's top cleric Abbas Siddiqui before the Assembly polls in 2021, the ISF contested that election alongside the Congress and the Left and ended up being the only party in the alliance to win a seat. It won in Bhangar, with Abbas Siddiqui's younger brother Naushad getting elected from the constituency in what was earlier a TMC stronghold in South 24 Parganas district. Though it does not pose a big threat to the TMC's Muslim vote, the ISF nonetheless held its ground and never really went away. In the 2023 panchayat elections, it picked up around 400 gram panchayat seats, mostly in the TMC bastion of South Bengal. The ISF's support base comprises poor agricultural workers and Bengali-speaking, working-class Muslims who are the followers of Furufura Sharif. The ISF's brand of social justice politics, which is also aimed at other vulnerable groups such as Dalits and tribals, is what has helped the party gain traction among voters from these communities. If left unchecked, the TMC believes this has the potential to pose a challenge to its hold over minority votes. In contrast, the TMC till now has relied mostly on political symbolism and fear in the community about the BJP coming to power to keep its hold on the Muslim vote. It is in this context that Siddiqui's entry into the TMC is politically important. His link to the Furufura Sharif — he is the cousin of Abbas and Naushad — provides him with a heft that the ruling party can utilise to reach out to Muslim voters and negate the ISF's influence ahead of the Assembly election battle, when it will need the entire minority vote behind it. 'Kasem Siddiqui has good organisational skills. That is why he was appointed general secretary,' said TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. For the TMC, widespread support of women (because of its welfare initiatives) and minority community voters, and the success in portraying the BJP as a party of outsiders have been the ingredients of a winning combination till now. At the same time, it has helped the TMC that the Hindu vote has not consolidated behind the BJP in equal measure despite the latter's best attempts. Trinamool and ISF While the ties between the TMC and Furfura Sharif took a hit after the formation of the ISF, and worsened further when Naushad was arrested ahead of the 2023 panchayat elections — he and his supporters clashed with the police after refusing to lift a blockade in Kolkata while protesting against violence in Bhangar — the ruling party of late has tried to mend fences and even reached out to the Bhangar MLA. In March, Mamata Banerjee made her first visit to the Sufi shrine in Hooghly district in nearly a decade and announced a polytechnic college in the area and a bus stand for pilgrims. During the visit, Kasem was seen by her side, sparking speculation about his entry into the party for the first time. The following day, on March 18, Naushad dropped in to meet the CM at the state secretariat to discuss, as he claimed, matters related to his constituency. Denying that there were any plans to join hands with the TMC, Naushad asked how he could join the ruling party in the state when he spent 42 days in jail for a 'movement against this government' and more than 10 ISF workers had died in the last four years. However, at the time, those in the know said the two sides were considering reaching an 'understanding' and a senior TMC leader said the idea behind the meeting was to 'ensure 100% Muslim consolidation in the 2026 elections'. In April, the TMC and the ISF MLA were back to targeting each other publicly, with Naushad alleging that Abhishek Banerjee had abstained from voting on the Waqf Amendment Bill and the ruling party's second-in-command calling for legal action against Naushad for making 'false remarks'. In the end, the crux of the matter is that Kasem Siddiqui was one of the TMC's vocal critics when his cousin was arrested, and now he holds a post in that very party. Whether this is part of some understanding between TMC and the ISF or represents the ruling party's success in regaining a toehold among the Furfura Sharif clerics remains a million-dollar question. Naushad on Friday welcomed his cousin's political entry but warned him that he had chosen the wrong side. 'I have no problem with my 'bhaijan' joining politics. We have realised that a political platform is required to work for people, but he has the wrong party. That party is corrupt and does not work for people,' the Bhangar MLA told The Indian Express.

"Stalin may take pride in declaring himself non-devotee of Murugan": ANS Prasad accuses DMK of anti-hindu agenda
Madurai (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 14 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State Media Spokesperson ANS Prasad issued a scathing statement on Friday, accusing Chief Minister MK Stalin and the ruling DMK government of politicising religion and placing covert obstacles in the way of the upcoming World Murugan Devotees' Conference, scheduled to be held in Madurai on June 22. In a sharp attack on the state government, Prasad said, 'Chief Minister Stalin may take pride in declaring himself a non-devotee of Murugan to please the followers of E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar). But at the same time, the DMK government must stop covertly imposing obstacles on the upcoming Murugan Devotees' Conference in Madurai, which could give the public the impression that Stalin is an 'enemy of Tamil deity Murugan'.' 'Judicial Intervention Sought: CM MK Stalin and DMK Govt Directed to Cease Politicisation, Ensure Unfettered Conduct of World Murugan Devotees Conference in Madurai, Upholding Spiritual Rights & Constitutional Freedoms,' he added. Prasad alleged that CM Stalin, known for distancing himself from religious practices, had acted against Hindu sentiments to appease followers of EV Ramasamy (Periyar). He said, 'Chief Minister Stalin may take pride in declaring himself a non-devotee of Murugan to please the followers of E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar). But at the same time, the DMK government must stop covertly imposing obstacles on the upcoming Murugan Devotees' Conference in Madurai, which could give the public the impression that Stalin is an 'enemy of Tamil deity Murugan'.' He reminded the DMK that under the Indian Constitution framed by B.R. Ambedkar, a Chief Minister must serve all religions equally, regardless of personal beliefs. Prasad also pointed out that preparations for the conference were underway, with expectations of over 5 lakh devotees attending from Tamil Nadu and around the globe. According to Prasad, the DMK and its alliance partners, including Congress, VCK, CPI(M), and others, had grown increasingly nervous over the conference's expected success. 'Their nervousness indicates the grand success this event is going to be,' he said. He further added, 'The people have now realised the true nature of the 'anti-Hindu Periyarist DMK' of Chief Minister Stalin, the 'missionary-backed anti-Hindu DMK' of Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, and the 'foreign religious, Hindu-targeting DMK' of the controversial Minister Sekarbabu.' Prasad also condemned the state government for allegedly misusing temple funds to organise a parallel state-sponsored event in Palani, claiming it was done for electoral gain and to divide Hindu society. As the event drew near, Prasad claimed that groups like Makkal Adhikaram, May 17 Movement, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, and Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, allegedly backed by the DMK, had petitioned the Director General of Police (DGP) seeking a ban on the conference. These petitions were called 'another anti-Hindu drama' by the BJP leader. 'These groups have been making derogatory remarks about the conference, the Hindu religion, and Hindu gods, inciting social unrest. Meanwhile, the police remain silent spectators,' Prasad stated. He also alleged that police had stopped volunteers from distributing invitations and intimidated Murugan devotees. Referring to the spiritual heritage of Tamil Nadu, Prasad said, 'Tamil Nadu, the land once guided by the Nayanmars and Alwars, has always been a spiritual land. Despite invasions and temple destructions in North India, Tamil Nadu is home to thousands of ancient temples that have withstood the test of time.' He raised serious concerns over a long-standing controversy surrounding Tirupparankundram Hill, the first of the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, claiming that certain groups were trying to rename it 'Sikandar Hill' and conduct non-vegetarian feasts and animal sacrifices near the temple. He said, 'A group led by IUML MP from Ramanathapuram, Nawaz Kani, even staged a protest by eating non-vegetarian food along the sacred path to the temple, releasing photos of their act. This enraged the entire Tamil community.' Prasad pointed out that a mass protest held on February 4, which attracted over 50,000 people despite government restrictions, had already served as a warning to the ruling coalition. He warned that any further attempts to hinder the June 22 conference would backfire politically and spiritually. 'This conference will serve to reaffirm that Tamil Nadu is a land of spirituality, and expose the DMK government's double standards, selectively targeting Hinduism under the guise of secularism.' Calling the upcoming event a festival of Hindu resurgence, he said, 'This conference, which unites Murugan devotees beyond political lines, will be a grand success and will deliver a strong blow to anti-Hindu forces. The spiritual uprising at Tirupparankundram will surely echo in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections!' The conference is expected to see the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, with preparations for their participation underway.
