
At least 146 Income Insurance customers hit by ransomware attack on data handling firm
SINGAPORE: A ransomware attack on a Singapore-based data handling service provider has compromised the personal information of at least 146 Income Insurance policy holders.
The company in question, DataPost, is in the early stages of investigating the attack, the firm said on Thursday (May 29).
DataPost was responsible for the printing and mailing of some of Income Insurance policy holders' documents, the insurer said in a separate statement, adding that affected customers' bonus statements had been compromised.
DataPost, which works with government agencies and financial institutions, among others, told CNA its investigations "will take time to complete".
In response to queries from CNA, a spokesperson from the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) said that it is aware of the case and is also investigating.
A spokesperson from the Cyber Security Agency told CNA that the agency is aware of the incident and has reached out to DataPost to offer assistance.
"We are keeping a close watch on developments," they added.
In ransomware attacks, threat actors typically use malicious software to encrypt files on servers, then demand a ransom in exchange for unlocking these files.
The attack on DataPost was flagged on May 27 by infosecurity blog RedPacket Security and cybersecurity platform HookPhish.
The breach led to data exfiltration, or the unauthorised transfer of data, and appeared to involve multiple tools and personnel, suggesting a coordinated attack, according to RedPacket Security.
The threat group was identified as "direwolf", and allegedly used various infostealers – or malicious software that breaches computer systems – to gather the data.
CNA has contacted DataPost for further comment on the scale and severity of the attack.
INCOME INSURANCE COMPROMISED
In its statement, Income Insurance said that it was alerted to the incident on Sunday.
The compromised data included information such as names, postal addresses, policy numbers and plans, and annual bonuses for the year 2024.
Upon being notified, the insurer immediately suspended all printing jobs with DataPost. The company also blocked connections to DataPost and reinforced firewall restrictions.
Income Insurance said it was on "heightened alert" to monitor for any suspicious activity, and is reaching out to all policy holders who might have been impacted by the breach, the company said.
It added that there is currently no evidence of unauthorised access to any of its digital platforms and that it will "work closely" with both relevant authorities and DataPost to assess the full impact of the incident.
The insurer's CEO Andrew Yeo said that protecting the privacy and security of policy holders' personal information was of "utmost importance".
"We believe in informing our policy holders promptly and empathise with the concern this incident may cause," he said, adding that the company will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
DataPost provides e-invoicing services to financial institutions, insurance companies, telecommunication companies and government agencies in Singapore and Malaysia.
It handles over 40 million documents per month, according to its website.
The company said its facilities are audited annually by banks and third-party auditors to ensure compliance with data security and operational security requirements.
Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has accredited DataPost as the service provider for InvoiceNow, a nationwide e-invoicing network.
Through InvoiceNow, companies can transmit e-invoices in a standard digital format across different finance systems.
DataPost told CNA that it will comply with all regulatory obligations throughout the course of the investigation.

BOJ sets aside maximum provision of losses for bond transactions

Japan Q1 capital spending hits record but some export sectors weak
TOKYO :Investment by Japanese companies in plants and equipment surged to a record in the first quarter led by industries focused on domestic demand, but key export sectors reduced spending in a sign that U.S. tariffs are undermining business confidence. Capital spending in January-March grew 6.4 per cent to 18.8 trillion yen ($130 billion), according to finance ministry data on Monday. The previous record had been set in 2007. But business investment has been patchy, dipping 0.2 per cent in the previous quarter to mark the first fall in nearly four years. On a seasonally adjusted basis, capital spending rose 1.6 per cent during the quarter. "Capital expenditure has been driven by those sectors benefiting from strong domestic sales thanks to price hikes or inbound tourism such as hotel construction," said Takeshi Minami, chief economist at Norinchukin Research Institute. Spending for the food sector climbed 13 per cent while the real estate sector increased spending by 11 per cent. Tellingly, however, spending by the auto sector fell 1.4 per cent and spending by makers of factory equipment dropped 4.1 per cent. "After Trump's election victory in November, the tariff threat has turned some of those companies cautious about fresh investment," Minami said. The data is unlikely to have a significant impact on revised gross domestic product figures due on June 9, he added. Preliminary GDP data last month showed Japan's economy shrank by an annualised 0.7 per cent in the first quarter, contracting for the first time in a year due to stagnant consumer spending and falling exports. Capital expenditure, a key gauge of domestic demand-led economic growth, has been generally strong in recent years as companies spent on information technology to offset a chronic labour crunch arising from the country's fast-ageing population. The brisk spending has been backed by rising corporate profits. Monday's data showed corporate sales rose 4.3 per cent in the first quarter from a year earlier, and recurring profits increased 3.8 per cent. U.S. tariffs, however, threaten car makers and other export-oriented Japanese firms which form the backbone of the economy. Trump imposed 10 per cent tariffs on most imports into the United States and has also imposed 25 per cent levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Japan also faces a 24 per cent tariff rate starting in July unless it can negotiate a deal with Trump. According to an estimate by the Japan Research Institute, if all the threatened tariff measures against Japan were take effect, U.S.-bound exports will fall by up to 6 trillion yen a year, squeezing corporate profits by up to 25 per cent. That would slow wage growth at manufacturers to 2-2.4 per cent in 2026 from an increase of around 3 per cent currently, the institute said in a report last week. Asia's factory activity shrinks in May as US tariffs bite
TOKYO: Asia's factory activity shrank in May as soft demand in China and the impact of US tariffs took a heavy toll on companies, private surveys showed on Monday (Jun 2), highlighting the darkening outlook for the once fast-growing region. Trade-reliant Japan and South Korea continued to see manufacturing activity contract in May as US President Donald Trump's automobile tariffs cloud the outlook for exports. Adding to the gloom, an official survey on Saturday showed China's manufacturing activity shrank in May for a second month in a sign of weakness in the world's second-largest economy. With many Asian economies making little progress in trade negotiations with the US, uncertainty will likely keep companies from boosting production or spending, analysts said. "It's hard to expect a pick-up in Asia's manufacturing activity any time soon with countries in the region slapped with quite high 'reciprocal' tariffs," said Toru Nishihama, chief emerging market economist at Dai-ichi Life Research Institute. "With domestic demand weak, China is flooding Asia with cheap exports, which is also putting deflationary pressure on the region's economies," he said. Japan's final au Jibun Bank Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) stood at 49.4 in May, up from April but staying below the 50.0 line that indicates contraction for the 11th successive month, a private survey showed on Monday.
