Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen spells out why he is excited to be back at Dunfermline Athletic

The Courier16 hours ago

Jeremiah Chilokoa-Mullen hopes both he and Dunfermline can thrive – rather than simply survive – this season under Neil Lennon.
The defender has penned a new 12-month contract with the Pars, who activated an option in the agreement signed by the former Leeds United last season.
The 20-year-old arrived on a short-term deal at the start of February and made a huge impact at the heart of the Fifers rearguard.
He was an ever-present at the back as the East End Park men successfully avoided relegation to League One.
However, the Scotland U/21 cap is convinced there will be better things ahead for Dunfermline after Lennon's decision to stay on as manager.
'It's good to be back. I'm excited for the season,' he said after putting pen to paper at the club on Friday.
'Obviously, I enjoyed my time here last season. So, I'm looking to kick on again this season and hopefully improve individually and as a team.
'Last season, we managed to survive. But I think we'll be looking at the other end of the table going into this season.
'It's a tough league. Anyone can beat anyone, we know that.
'So I think just take the positives from last season and keep doing those things. And the things that we weren't so good at, build on that.'
Dunfermline finished the campaign in seventh place after bottom side Hamilton Accies were deducted 15 points due to SPFL rule breaches.
But, with just nine wins from 36 league games, there will have to be major improvements if the Pars are to achieve their stated aim of pushing for promotion to the Premiership.
Chilokoa-Mullen saw enough in his seven matches in charge to know that Lennon's experience of winning silverware and competing in Europe with previous clubs Celtic and Hibernian could prove invaluable.
'One of the main things was playing regularly,' he added as he surveyed his time with the Fifers last season. 'It's my first real experience of men's football.
'That's something I needed and I enjoyed that.
'And working under an experienced manager, Neil Lennon, and playing with experienced players, they're obviously helping me.
'[Lennon] has got lots of experience. He's worked with loads of top players. It's always good. He can pass things down to all of us, really.
'I think he wants us to dominate games this season.
'Obviously, last season, he didn't have that much time with us. So, I don't think he could really establish the full way he wanted to play in the short period of time.
'But this season, he wants us to dominate games, have the ball – and score more goals.'

Cyriel Dessers urged to complete Rangers transfer exit

The Nigerian international has been strongly linked with a surprise move to Greek football despite being Rangers and the Premiership's top scorer last season. Greek fitness coach Polychronopoulos worked with Dessers and was at Ibrox for eight years before leaving last year to join Leeds United. And he reckons Dessers would be a good fit for AEK Athens. He said: "Personally, I think it would be a very good move for Cyriel and AEK to make this transfer. "He is an excellent character and highly professional. A kind person, always with a smile on his face and this is something that plays an important role. "In both his first season at Rangers and his second, he played in almost every game and that says a lot. He is always available and does not get injured. Read more: "He is a classic No.9. He may not press the opposition defence as much or hold the ball welll, but he knows how to be in the right position and with one touch send the ball into the net. This is his great gift. "He is an unpredictable top striker and can score goals in many different ways, because he has a way of getting into key positions. He was the top scorer in Scotland and scored in all competitions with Rangers in both seasons. "He is very experienced - 30 years old and played in the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Scotland, plus the Nigerian National Team. "Through his time at Rangers, he learned to withstand pressure situations. "He thrived in a team chasing the title and where there is intense pressure and criticism. He speaks many languages and that helps too."

Sadiku fighting losing battle for further support at Celtic

Most get down to business as soon as the campaign ends, allowing players to know where they stand and prepare for a fresh term. With a number of players coming to the end of their contracts and no one now in position, it would seem, to green-light administrative decisions, the optics of the situation suggest a lack of joined-up thinking when it comes to the women's side of the club. Chris Duffy, essentially Celtic women's CEO, stepped down from his role at the end of the season after murmurs of a difference in vision as to how the club should progress. Stewart McGuire, formerly of Hibs and Dunfermline, could be set to be his confirmed replacement at some point this coming week. He has his work cut out for him. Towards the latter weeks of the season when it was apparent that Celtic were clearly out of the running as Hibs, Rangers and City jostled for the title, there were two notable points made repeatedly by Elena Sadiku in both pre- and post-match interviews. The first was that the players she signed – Emma Lawton, Saoirse Noonan, Morgan Cross – have all improved and made an impact this season. Lawton broke into the Scotland set-up and Noonan has managed to force herself into the Republic of Ireland squad. Existing players, though, who excelled as Celtic clinched the title for the first time in their history have struggled to make the same kind of impact this term. The second point Sadiku was at pains to make was an appeal for the club to back her. The suspicion will be back that in a financial sense all the backing that is going to be given is already there. The likelihood of further sums being filtered into the women's side is little more than fanciful, however unpalatable that may be to the likes of Sadiku. The Swede, who has told the players that she will be there for another season, will have to work with what she has got in terms of a budget that isn't likely to shift significantly. Last year when it became apparent that Caitlin Hayes was heading to Brighton in the January transfer window, Sadiku had spoken of doing the ground work to ensure that there was a replacement lined up to step in. At the final hurdle the move fell down, much to the inevitable frustration of the Celtic manager. Hayes' absence was felt keenly as the season went on and although there remains an accusation that Celtic under-performed given the resources that they do have, there is no doubt that her loss was hugely damaging to Sadiku's ambitions of retaining the title. This summer who goes out may well be as interesting as who goes in. Certainly, though, if anyone is paying attention then a fourth-placed finish in a trophyless season is never going to cut the mustard for a team looking to forge a dominance in the women's game that mirrors that of the men. The optics of the current situation would point to the fact that Sadiku is a lone voice when it comes to a wish to amplify the reach and exposure of the women's wing. AND ANOTHER THING It is difficult to give Hibs the full credit they deserve for their title win at Ibrox on the final day of the season. It was an extraordinary achievement for Grant Scott to take the Championship when consideration is given to the funds of Glasgow City and Rangers. With less than half their budget, Scott was able to deliver a first title since 2007 to Leith. But, and this was an accusation that could also have been made last season when Celtic won their first title, the club have missed a trick when it comes to fully milking the achievement and pressing home the magnitude of the title win. It could and should have stayed front and centre for far longer than it did with more media invitations to fully endorse the title win and ensure that coverage of the event did not dissipate at the full-time whistle. AND FINALLY In a month where Scots have been celebrated around Europe for the impact that they have had, it would be remiss to overlook Kim Little. How Melissa Andreatta, and those who have gone before, must wish that she had not made the call to step down from international duty so early on in her career. The 34-year-old helped Arsenal to the Champions League against a much celebrated Barcelona side last month as the London side continue to lead the way in the women's game. They announced this week that they will use the 60,000 Emirates for all home domestic games next season. They played nine of 11 home games in the WSL at the stadium this season – and had 57,000 in for a 5-0 win over Spurs.

Ospreys seal permanent deal for impressive South African The Ospreys have signed South African centre Evardi Boshoff on a permanent basis following two successful loan spells. ‌ The 26-year-old initially joined the Ospreys on loan for the second-half of the 23/24 campaign, before spending last season on loan with them as well. Having made 23 appearances for the club, his performances quickly made him a fan favourite. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. ‌ 'I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to re-join the Ospreys," said Boshoff. "I'm looking forward to having a full season with this group and reconnecting with the fans who have been great since I first came here. 'I've really enjoyed life in Wales, the people here are so welcoming and the boys in the team have always made myself and Dan (Kasende) feel at home. This is a special club and it's a privilege to be a part of.' Ospreys head coach Mark Jones added: 'Evardi is both a talented and dedicated player who has already proven his ability at this level, so we're really appreciative that the Toyota Cheetahs have allowed us to sign him on a permanent basis. Article continues below 'I was really impressed with how he stepped up to the plate for us last season. With the injury to Owen (Watkin), he had to play a lot of rugby and with that came increased responsibility. 'We've seen in the past how much he can contribute on and off the field, and his return not only brings a familiarity to our backline, but also some valuable experience amongst it as well.' England stars set for Twickenham farewell as Wales duo target silverware Leicester Tigers have named an unchanged 23-man squad for Saturday's Premiership final against Bath at the Allianz Stadium as two Welshmen go for silverware. ‌ England duo Dan Cole and Ben Youngs will both make their final career appearance off the bench, while departing Tigers Julian Montoya and Handre Pollard both start. In the pack, in-form former Ospreys back-row Olly Cracknell partners Wales international Tommy Reffell and Hanro Liebenberg at the back of the scrum, with Lions tourist Ollie Chessum lining up alongside Cameron Henderson in the second-row. In the front-row, Wales prop Nicky Smith starts on the loosehead, with Joe Heyes the other side of captain Montoya. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free ‌ In the backs, Michael Cheika - coaching his final game for the Tigers after just one year in charge - has the likes of Freddie Steward, Adam Radwan, Ollie Hassell-Collins and Jack van Poortvliet on hand to strengthen their bid for the Premiership title. Star fly-half Finn Russell has overcome his injury concern to start as Bath go in search of a first Premiership title since 1996. The British and Irish Lions tourist was a slight doubt for the final after limping off in last Friday's semi-final win over Bristol, but he has been deemed fully fit to feature in the number 10 jersey. ‌ Welsh back-row addresses Test future Welsh back-row Carwyn Tuipulotu has addressed his Test future after committing to stay in France with Section Paloise. The former Scarlets No. 8 left Llanelli midway through the season to join the Top 14 outfit, signing a new deal with the club on Thursday to stay for two more years. Following his decision to stay in France, he admitted he still harbours ambitions to play for Wales. 'Right now, I am uncapped, which leaves me qualified to play for other nations like Tonga or England," he told RugbyPass. ‌ "It has always been an ambition of mine to play for Wales, but at this stage of my career is vital that I play more games, something that I wasn't getting on the Scarlets setup. "I hope I can shape up to be the player that Wales needs, as they need ball carriers and people who can take the ball forward.' He added: 'I do miss home, but obviously it was the right time to leave. I had gone a bit complacent, and I needed a new challenge. I want to change the perception that some fans have of me, to show that I can be the player they expected me to be. ‌ 'I would advise players who are in the same position as I was to take the leap and come to France if they have the chance. It is a great environment and experience. For me, I left my comfort zone and was able to enjoy rugby again. It was the challenge I needed to come out of my shell. I can now become my own man and player. Thanks to Pau, I have matured and became a different player.' Dawson urges Lions to tour France British and Irish Lions great Matt Dawson says they would be 'insane' not to organise a full tour to France. The Lions are understood to be open to expansion, but so far, that would appear to mean a one-off fixture against France ahead of the next tour to New Zealand in 2029. ‌ But former England scrum-half Dawson - who toured with the Lions to all three of the southern hemisphere giants during his playing career - says a full-on tour of France should be explored. 'If that doesn't happen at some stage that is probably going to be one of the greatest sporting misses ever,' Dawson told The Times. 'It would be insane not to do a Lions tour of France and to put it on the roster. I know that upsets the apple cart and there is significant revenue every 12 years for Australia, New Zealand and South Africa at the moment. But this is about broadening the game. 'The Lions in France could catapult the game globally into a different stratosphere. I think it could be that important, and hopefully the southern hemisphere sides will understand. Do we do it every three years? I don't know, but that would be the magic step for me. Article continues below 'All of a sudden it opens up the Lions to millions of people that have got no chance of watching the Lions. I bet you a lot of French people would love to go on a Lions tour. And imagine how many people from Britain and Ireland love watching on television but never in their wildest dreams could they think that they are going to go down to the southern hemisphere. [Going to France] would be off the charts. What a tour.'
