Heitinga leaves Liverpool to become Ajax head coach
John Heitinga has left his role as Liverpool's assistant boss to return to Dutch club Ajax as their head coach.The former Netherlands defender made more than 200 appearances for Ajax before having spells as their reserve team boss and interim head coach.The 41-year-old has rejoined the club on a two-year contract and will be assisted by another Ajax academy product, Marcel Keizer.Heitinga succeeds Francesco Farioli, who left Ajax last week after his sole year in charge ended with an end-of-season collapse.With seven games left Farioli's team were nine points clear at the top of the Eredivisie, but ended up finishing a point behind champions PSV Eindhoven.
That meant a third straight season without a trophy for Ajax, who have won the Dutch title a record 36 times."John is a good coach with enormous drive," said their technical director Alex Kroes."He is ambitious and has further developed himself over the past few years in the Premier League and Champions League."John knows the club well and we are convinced that he, together with Marcel, will help improve our players and build on the progress made since last summer."Ajax won 14 of Heitinga's 22 games in charge at the end of the 2022-23 season to finish third in the Eredivisie.Heitinga then spent 2023-24 as West Ham's first-team coach under David Moyes before joining Arne Slot at Liverpool last summer, and they helped the Reds win their second Premier League title in Slot's first season in charge."I am incredibly excited to start," said Heitinga, who also played for Atletico Madrid, Everton, Fulham and Hertha Berlin."The last years in England have done me a lot of good. I'm ready to continue as a head coach and I'm honoured to be given that opportunity at Ajax."

Daire Gorman, 13, was born with a rare condition which has left him with no arms or legs and his mother Shelley says the airline 'completely took Daire's independence away' A mum has criticised Ryanair for stripping her son of his 'independence' and making him feel like a 'nuisance' after he was informed he couldn't bring his power wheelchair on board. Daire Gorman, who was born without arms or legs due to a rare condition known as Crommelin syndrome which affects limb development, is the individual in question. The 13 year old Liverpool fanatic from Co Monaghan, was all set to travel to Liverpool to watch his beloved team play at Anfield last weekend. However, just days before the trip, Daire's mother, Shelley, was asked by Ryanair if the power wheelchair could be folded, only to be told that Daire's wheelchair exceeded the airline's maximum dimensions. In a conversation with The Irish Times, Shelley recounted the ordeal. After being asked if the wheelchair could be folded, Shelley responded, "replied saying it was a power wheelchair and couldn't fold down." When she was told that the chair would be too large, Shelley contacted special assistance customer service: "I ended up ringing special assistance customer services and they asked could he not go without the chair, and refused to take his chair", reports Belfast Live. "As a parent, you try and do your best for your children and especially children with additional needs and protect them from negativity – my child needs his wheelchair, imagine asking can he not go without it." She alleges that Ryanair initially declined to offer a refund before eventually giving in. However, this wasn't necessary as the family managed to find a manual wheelchair which was used on the day. But according to Shelley, this led to further problems. She explained that Daire needed to use an "aisle chair" to transfer onto the plane seat. She also alleges that Daire was the last one to board the plane when it was full, resulting in him being pushed the entire length of the plane, "knocking off people" and "losing his dignity (with) everyone watching him transfer on to the seat". She claimed that the airline "completely took Daire's independence away and made him feel like an inconvenience". In response to Shelley's complaints, Ryanair issued a statement to The Irish Times. In the statement, they say "regrettably, these emotive claims made by his mother are false. She fails anywhere in her complaint to accept that this wheelchair exceeded our well-publicised max dimensions." A spokesperson for Ryanair stated that the max dimensions information was "readily available to Ms Gorman when this booking was made and if she had simply complied with them then that would have been the end of the matter". The airline has also refuted the claim that they asked Daire's mother if he could travel without a wheelchair, and confirmed that they did offer a refund. Moreover, a spokesperson clarified that wheelchair boardings are managed by the Dublin Airport Authority, not individual airlines. The statement asserts that Shelley's "claim that 'Ryanair completely took Daire's independence away' is false and absurd". Ryanair did not respond to The Irish Times' follow up queries about Daire's seating at the back of the plane. On Friday, Shelley spoke out on Northern Sound radio about the incident: "He was devastated. It's hard enough for someone in a wheelchair, especially a child with additional needs. They find it hard sometimes to fit in. So yeah, he was very upset. And he thought then 'oh this is my fault. If I wasn't in a chair this wouldn't be happening. So he was very upset."

Russia and Ukraine to talk about peace but are still far apart
ISTANBUL, June 2 (Reuters) - Russian and Ukrainian officials are due to sit down on Monday in the Turkish city of Istanbul for their second round of direct peace talks since 2022, but the two sides are still far apart on how to end the war and the fighting is stepping up. U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded Russia and Ukraine make peace, but so far they have not and the White House has repeatedly warned the United States will "walk away" from the war if the two sides are too stubborn to reach a peace deal. The first round of talks on May 16 yielded the biggest prisoner swap of the war but no sign of peace - or even a ceasefire as both sides merely set out their own opening negotiating positions. After keeping the world guessing on whether Ukraine would even turn up for the second round, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Defence Minister Rustem Umerov would meet with Russian officials in Istanbul. The Russian delegation will be headed by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, who after the first round invoked French general and statesman Napoleon Bonaparte to assert that war and negotiations should always be conducted at the same time. On Sunday, Ukraine launched one of its most ambitious attacks of the war, targeting Russian nuclear-capable long-range bombers in Siberia and other military bases, while the Kremlin launched 472 drones at Ukraine, Ukraine's air force said, the highest nightly total of the war. The idea of direct talks was first proposed by President Vladimir Putin after Ukraine and European powers demanded that he agree to a ceasefire which the Kremlin dismissed. Putin said Russia would draft a memorandum setting out the broad contours of a possible peace accord and only then discuss a ceasefire. Kyiv said over the weekend it was still waiting for draft memorandum from the Russian side. Medinsky, the lead Kremlin negotiator, said on Sunday that Moscow had received a Ukraine's draft memorandum and told Russia's RIA news agency the Kremlin would react to it on Monday. According to Trump envoy Keith Kellogg, the two sides will in Turkey present their respective documents outlining their ideas for peace terms, though it is clear that after three years of war Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart. Kellogg has indicated that the U.S. will be involved in the talks and that even representatives from Britain, France and Germany will be too, though it was not clear at what level the United States would be represented. Ukraine's delegation will also include its deputy foreign minister, as well as several military and intelligence officials, according to an executive order by Zelenskiy on Sunday. In June last year, Putin set out his opening terms for an immediate end to the war: Ukraine must drop its NATO ambitions and withdraw all of its troops from the entirety of the territory of four Ukrainian regions claimed and mostly controlled by Russia. Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul will present to the Russian side a proposed roadmap for reaching a lasting peace settlement, according to a copy of the document seen by Reuters. According to the document, there will be no restrictions on Ukraine's military strength after a peace deal is struck, no international recognition of Russian sovereignty over parts of Ukraine taken by Moscow's forces, and reparations for Ukraine. The document also stated that the current location of the front line will be the starting point for negotiations about territory. Russia currently controls a little under one fifth of Ukraine, or about 113,100 square km, about the same size as the U.S. state of Ohio. Putin ordered tens of thousands of troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022 after eight years of fighting in eastern Ukraine between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian troops. The United States says over 1.2 million people have been killed and injured in the war since 2022. Trump has called Putin "crazy" and berated Zelenskiy in public in the Oval Office, but the U.S. president has also said that he thinks peace is achievable and that if Putin delays then he could impose tough sanctions on Russia.
