AI in classrooms? Use your head, not just the tool, says S'wak minister

MIRI (May 24): Teachers must strike a careful balance when leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom, ensuring it enhances rather than undermines genuine academic effort, said Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin.
The Senadin assemblyman however noted the growing challenges educators face today, especially amid rapid technological advancements and the increasing integration of AI in education.
'In this era, the teaching profession is more demanding than ever and the education landscape has changed so much in the last two decades,' he said during the Sarawak Teachers' Union (STU) 22nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at a hotel here today.
Lee warned against overreliance on technology, particularly AI. While these tools can offer valuable support, he noted they also risk diminishing students' ability to think critically and engage deeply with academic content.
'In the past, students had to spend hours on real research and reflection. Now, with AI, it's far too easy to generate academic work with just a few clicks.
'This undermines the authenticity and effort that should define quality education,' he said.
He stressed that while digitalisation in education is inevitable, it must be approached with care and balance.
'We have observed how technology can be used wisely to assist in teaching. There are both pros and cons.
'It's not just about having the latest tools, but knowing how to apply them meaningfully,' he said.
Lee also pointed to the evolving responsibilities of teachers, who are now expected to adapt to digital teaching methods, incorporate electronic devices into their lessons, and monitor students' interaction with technology.
Meanwhile, Lee presented the Bintang Setia Guru (BSG) awards to outstanding educators and announced a RM10,000 contribution to STU's annual fund, in recognition of the union's ongoing advocacy for teachers' welfare.

RM162bil in projects bring over 53,000 jobs to Johor
Lee says Johor is attracting more high value-added activities such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. INVESTMENT projects have created more than 53,000 job opportunities in Johor between 2022 and 2024. State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said Johor attracted 1,761 projects between 2022 and 2024, with a total committed investment value of RM162.2bil. These projects resulted in the creation of 16,762 jobs in 2022, 19,053 jobs in 2023 and 17,949 jobs in 2024, bringing the three-year total to 53,764 direct jobs. 'These figures reflect only the investment sector and exclude jobs in construction, logistics, business services and retail,' he said at the state assembly sitting. He was responding to a question from Fauziah Misri (BN-Penawar), who asked how the state ensured that investments benefitted locals in terms of employment and economic development. Lee said the state government was committed to ensuring that all incoming investments generate quality, high-skilled job opportunities for Johoreans while also boosting the state's economy. 'With our competitive cost structure and strong infrastructure, Johor is now attracting more high value-added activities such as semiconductors, petrochemicals and data centres. 'Data centre investments by global companies such as Microsoft and ByteDance have also helped position Johor as the largest data centre hub in Malaysia. 'This has opened up opportunities too for skilled jobs in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.' Lee said high-impact investments also created spillover effects across professional service sectors such as logistics, banking, auditing, legal and consulting. 'For example, Mercedes-Benz has opened a regional logistics centre in Senai to serve as a parts distribution hub for the Asia-Pacific region. 'This facility does not only provide direct jobs in logistics and supply chain management, but also increases demand for support services including transport, warehousing and others.' He said Johor's tech sector has also attracted investments from companies like Wiwynn and Supermicro, which have set up manufacturing plants to support growing demand for data centres. 'These investments provide not only manufacturing jobs but also roles in research and development, engineering and project management,' he added.

e-Invoice Implementation For Revenue Below RM5 Mln Deferred To Jan 1, 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) today announced that the implementation phase for e-invoices for taxpayers with annual income or sales exceeding RM1 million but not exceeding RM5 million has been postponed to Jan 1, 2026. In a statement here, LHDN also announced that taxpayers with an annual income or sales below RM500,000 are exempted from the implementation of the e-Invoice system. "The implementation phase for taxpayers with annual income or sales up to RM1 million has been postponed to July 1, 2026," LHDN said. The board added that the decision was made after the government recognised the commitments of taxpayers, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), in meeting e-invoice legal requirements, which necessitate adequate preparation time and face numerous implementation challenges. The statement said that, in line with this decision, a new timeline for the e-invoice implementation phases has been established with Phase 3 targeting taxpayers with annual income or sales exceeding RM5 million but not exceeding RM25 million coming into effect on July 1, 2025. LHDN noted that Phase 4 will involve taxpayers with annual incomes or sales exceeding RM1 million up to RM5 million and will begin on Jan 1, 2026 while Phase 5 will cover the income group of up to RM1 million and will commence on July 1, 2026. The previously announced six-month grace period will also apply to these new phases, the agency said. It stressed that during this period, taxpayers will be permitted to issue consolidated e-invoices for all transactions, including self-billed e-invoices. Necessary details, it said, can be included in the 'Product or Service Description' field.

Melaka allocates RM700,000 for 'Bijak SPM' initiative
MELAKA: The Melaka government has allocated RM700,000 under the 2025 State Budget to implement an excellence programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidates through the SPM Smart Initiative, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the implementation of the initiative involved 95 secondary schools and would benefit 12,757 SPM candidates in the state. 'The main goal of this initiative is to support schools in implementing various excellence programmes, including answering technique workshops, final preparation workshops, and the provision of SPM learning materials, to help students face the exam with greater confidence and readiness. 'We will also hold high-tech workshops to ensure students are well-prepared to face the challenges of an increasingly technology-driven world,' he told reporters here today. He said this after opening the 2024 SPM Excellent Student Appreciation Ceremony and the 2025 Melaka Bijak SPM programme, which was also attended by Deputy State Investment, Industry and TVET Development Committee chairman Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zaha According to Ab Rauf, the state government is allocating RM381,100, through the Melaka Education Trust Fund (Tapem), this year for the Bijak Sejarah dan Cemerlang SPM initiatives. He said that under the initiative, students who obtained straight A+'s would receive an incentive of RM1,000 and students who obtained straight A's would receive RM500, while students who obtained an A+ in History would receive RM200. 'This year, the state government also allocated RM200,000 for the implementation of the Free Tuition Programme for SPM and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) students, especially those from the B40 group,' he said. In another development, he said that as part of efforts to expand access to education, the state government is taking steps to establish itself as the National TVET Centre, providing more opportunities for Melaka's youth to master high-tech skills aligned with current industry demands. 'Melaka currently has 61 TVET institutions offering various skills-based courses, and the confidence of foreign nations in the potential of local youth was recently demonstrated when the Chinese government offered 15 TVET scholarships to Malaysia, with five awarded to students from Melaka. 'This indirectly proves that Melaka is now ahead of other states in TVET development, convincing foreign countries to prioritise opportunities for our people,' he said.
