Bath overwhelm Lyon to win Challenge Cup

CNA23-05-2025

CARDIFF -Bath completed the second stage of what they hope will be a dream treble when they proved too good in all areas for Lyon and romped to a 37-12 triumph in the European Challenge Cup final on Friday.
Bath, who won the Premiership Cup this season and who will go into a home semi-final as the clear leaders of the English Premiership, were the better team throughout, but enjoyed the rub of the green in a controversial first half after an Ethan Dumortier try had given Lyon an early lead.
Tries for Tom Dunn and Max Ojomoh put Bath 17-5 up at halftime, but they had two men sin-binned, with Sam Underhill extremely lucky not to see red for a sickening head on head challenge, before Lyon had a try ruled out for obstruction.
Arno Botha scored for Lyon - 11th in the Top 14 standings - at the start of the second half, but Bath took control as tries for Beno Obano and man of the match scrumhalf Ben Spencer capped a dominant night.

'I now look forward to the next stages' — Kim Le Court takes victory in the first stage of the Women's Tour of Britain

Photo: GLASGOW: Kim Le Court won the sprint race against Kristen Faulkner on the first stage of the Tour of Britain Women as the two riders broke away on the final major climb of the race day. Le Court, riding for AG Insurance-Soudal, and Faulkner, riding for EF Education-Oatly, gained their lead on Langburn's Bank, which is about 37 km from the finish line in Redcar. With her win, Le Court expressed: 'I am very happy, not just with this victory, but also with being back here… We came into this stage with a plan and executed it perfectly. I attacked, had Kristen come with me, and we managed to hold off the chasers, both of us being strong engines.' The athlete added: 'It was pretty close at the finish, but I am delighted I could pull it off. I now look forward to the next stages, where we want to fight for some more good results.' With the recent outcomes, Kim Le Court now leads the four-stage Tour of Britain Women by five seconds. In a social media post shared by Lloyds Tour of Britain, it stated: 'Your Lloyds Tour of Britain Women Stage 1 winner… Kim Le Court 💚🇬🇧 #ToBW' Netizens commented on the post and remarked: ' Bravo Kim 👏🔥,' 'Congrats 🥳 well done 👏,' and ' Dang, girl is on FIRE 🔥this season 🙌.' Highlights of the race Stage one of the 82-km Tour of Britain Women began in Dalby Forest and ended in Redcar, and the route has two classified climbs. The race came alive on the descent before the second climb, Langburn's Bank. Kim Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal) attacked with 37 km to go and was later joined by Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly) and Anna Henderson (Lidl-Trek). Le Court went on the climb alone, winning the Queen of the Mountains points. Faulkner then rejoined her on the descent, and the pair gained about 30 seconds on the chasing group. The peloton couldn't close the gap despite the efforts from FDJ-Suez and Movistar. Faulkner almost crashed into a traffic island with 15 km to go, but Le Court waited for her break partner, knowing she needed the help. The breakaway duo worked together to reach the finish line. Le Court launched the sprint first and held off Faulkner for the win. Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) placed third from the peloton. Bath book Premiership Rugby final berth with 34-20 win over Bristol

BATH, England - Bath scored four second half tries to rally from a seven-point deficit at the break to beat West Country rivals Bristol Bears 34-20 at a jubilant Recreation Ground on Friday and book a place in this season's Premiership Rugby final. A try from lock James Dun gave Bristol a deserved 13-6 lead at halftime in the semi-final, but when the visitors lost scrumhalf Harry Randall to a shoulder injury late in the opening period, the momentum swung the way of their hosts. Bath seized control with a blistering opening 20 minutes to the second half as they scored tries through loose-forward Ted Hill, wings Joe Cokanasiga and Will Muir, and centre Max Ojomoh, to take the game away from the visitors. Bath were beaten finalists last year following defeat to Northampton Saints and will hope to lift the trophy for the first time in 29 years when they face either Leicester Tigers or Sale Sharks in the June 14 final at Twickenham. "It's huge. We're one step closer, but we'll come in on Monday and go again," Bath hooker Tom Dunn told TNT Sports. "We trust the process. We had a real calm halftime. "They are a good team but we stayed in it and we knew we'd wind it up. It's never over 'til it's over." Bath finished bottom of the Premiership table three seasons ago but have been revived under coach Johann van Graan and were worthy winners having stepped up several gears in the second half. Bristol will rue yellow cards for Kalaveti Ravouvou and Kieran Marmion, but never recovered from the loss of Randell, which took the tempo out of their game and allowed Bath to play to their strengths. Bath-born Dun crossed for the only try of the first half for Bristol following an electric break from his own 22 by Ravouvou and Van Graan will have been relieved his side only trailed by seven points at the break on the balance of play. Whatever was said in the changing room at halftime, Bath came out a changed side and it took just a minute into the second period for Hill's try to level the scores. Bath were rampant and scored four tries in the third quarter of the game to end it as a contest as they seek a third trophy of the season having already lifted the Premiership Rugby Cup and European Challenge Cup. Benhard Janse van Rensburg scored a late consolation try for Bristol, who are left still chasing the Premiership Rugby title. Buttler and Dawson shine as England beat West Indies in T20 opener

DURHAM, England :Former captain Jos Buttler scored a superb 96 off 59 balls, and Liam Dawson took four wickets on his international return, as England beat West Indies by 21 runs in the T20 series opener at Durham's Riverside ground on Friday. After making a 3-0 winning start to Harry Brook's captaincy in the one-dayers, England kept the momentum in the shorter format with an innings of 188-6 after winning the toss and batting first. West Indies finished on 167-9, with Romario Shepherd caught on the final ball of the match. Buttler, in at number three with England 16-1 after Ben Duckett was caught by West Indies captain Shai Hope off Shepherd, brought up his half century from 25 balls in the eighth over. He had earlier smashed three sixes and scooped a four from the first four balls of a devastating sixth over with Alzarri Joseph bowling. The 34-year-old, who stepped down as white-ball captain last February following England's group-stage exit from the Champions Trophy, continued to look like a man relieved of a heavy burden as he hit six fours and four sixes. Needing just four for the century, he was out lbw to Joseph in the penultimate over. The tally was Buttler's highest T20 international score on home soil. West Indies were 33-2 off 5.2 overs after losing Johnson Charles for 18, stumped by Buttler off Dawson, and Hope caught by Duckett, who repaid his own dismissal in like-for-like fashion, for three off debutant Matthew Potts. England restricted the visitors to 44-2 at the end of the powerplay, compared to 78-1 at the same stage of the home innings. Evin Lewis hit West Indies top score of 39 off 23 balls, before being caught by Brydon Carse with Jacob Bethell bowling. Dawson, back in the side at 35 and playing his first England match since 2022, claimed his second and third wickets when Duckett caught Sherfane Rutherford (2) and Roston Chase (24) in quick succession. The left-arm spinner wrapped up with a fourth wicket, for 20 runs from his four overs, by bowling Rovman Powell as West Indies slipped to 115-6 on a tough night in the north-east.
