Alexis Badel hopes to capitalise on several pickup rides, headlined by Lucky Touch, after a jockey shortage forced the Jockey Club to lift his suspension for Wednesday night's all-dirt meeting at Sha Tin.
The Frenchman scored a much-needed winner on Sunday when he got the late call-up to replace Angus Chung Yik-lai on Righteous Arion, who held off the previously unbeaten Hong Lok Golf to claim a narrow victory.
Chung, Zac Purton, Vincent Ho Chak-yiu and Keith Yeung Ming-lun were ruled out for multiple weeks after they were injured in falls on Sunday.
Badel will look to add to his 10 triumphs this season with a book of seven rides on Wednesday night, with the Jamie Richards-trained Lucky Touch his strongest pickup mount.
Badel hops aboard Lucky Touch for the second time in the Class Four Po Shek Wu Handicap (1,650m), having partnered the son of Sweynesse two starts ago when he ran second to Take Action at Happy Valley.
Lucky Touch was to be ridden again by Purton, who rode him last start when he rocketed home late to run a close third to the in-form Never Peter Out when trying the dirt for the first time.
'I like Lucky Touch. He was a good run last time,' Badel said.
'Ever Smart is a bit better than his form suggests, I believe, regardless of the draw. There are a couple that should run well.'
Ever Smart was another Purton ride, with the Frankie Lor Fu-chuen-trained gelding pursuing a breakthrough success in the Class Five Diamond Hill Handicap (1,200m).
He ran back-to-back thirds at the Valley before leading from barrier 14 and fading to run 12th to Ho Ho Star at Sha Tin last start.
Badel replaces Chung on Superb Capitalist in the strongest race on the nine-event card, the Class Two Tin Chak Handicap (1,200m).
Trained by Tony Cruz, Superb Capitalist will be out to recapture his best form after misfiring in recent runs.
It will be the five-year-old's first start on the dirt since his debut on the surface in May 2023, which yielded a solid fourth.
Mark Newnham holds the key to the Tin Chak Handicap with Sing Dragon, who chases a fifth victory on the dirt, and consistent sprinter Full Credit.
Capital Delight and Bundle Of Charm also look to have claims.
Strive For Glory, All Are Mine, Monta Frutta and Beato are Badel's other rides on Wednesday night.

James Cummings to join Hong Kong training ranks: ‘It's a sliding doors moment for me'

James Cummings has labelled his dramatic career shift 'a sliding doors moment' after being unveiled as Hong Kong's newest trainer at Sha Tin on Wednesday morning. In a coup for the Jockey Club, Cummings – who will finish up as Godolphin's private trainer in Australia next month – will join the roster for the 2026-27 Hong Kong season. 'Hong Kong is something of a Holy Grail for a young horse trainer in Australia to imagine receiving an invitation [to train in],' said Cummings. 'It's a sliding doors moment for me – the conclusion of my contract at Godolphin and the decision to go out on my own, which a few months ago I was fully committed to doing. 'But when the Hong Kong Jockey Club reached out, I felt like the timing was right because it gives me the opportunity to get some certainty into the future. James Cummings (left) and Jockey Club official Andew Harding chat to the press at Sha Tin on Wednesday morning. 'The focus on the horses and the investment in facilities here is a very strong pulling factor to the decision. It will be a great stage in my career. 'Out of respect of my staff and owners, who have already been very supportive, I think this gives everyone certainty and everyone can plan for the best,' added Cummings of the early announcement of his Hong Kong move. While Cummings is looking forward to testing himself in the cutthroat Hong Kong racing cauldron, he's also excited about what the move will mean for his family. 'For me on a personal note, I've got four children under 10. Speaking to the Hong Kong Jockey Club, I really felt like it was now or never for me,' said the 37-year-old. 'This is a great age for them. They're excited about the adventure that we can really take on as a family and I'm excited for them because it gives them a world view. As a family, we are very excited about making that change.' Grandson of the legendary Bart Cummings, James will finish up as Godolphin's private trainer on July 31 and had applied to take over the Leilani Lodge stables at Randwick in Sydney which are synonymous with the famed Cummings family. 'I feel like time is on my side. I've met some Hong Kong owners over my time and what I like is that I've got plenty of time between now and when I begin next year to get to know many more,' he said. 'That will come and that time will be well spent. The preparation is part of an overall strategy that we were quite comfortable with and I look forward to meeting more members of the club and those associated with the entire jurisdiction. 'I do like that I've got that time to get myself organised, get set, have a chance to refresh since the busy time in the last little while and over the last eight years training privately for Godolphin. That's something I can hone in on in the next period of time.' While building new relationships will be key for Cummings, he'll also be leaning on existing ones with the likes of Hugh Bowman, Brenton Avdulla and Zac Purton. 'I've got friends here who are in the jockeys' ranks. I can reach out to those friends and I have met some of the trainers along the way. There's going to be a great opportunity for me to lean on those who are familiar faces to me,' he said.

Benno Yung confirms season 2024-25 will be his last as a trainer

Benno Yung Tin-pang has informed the Jockey Club he will not be making an application for a licence for next term, meaning next month's season finale will mark the end of his 12-year career as a trainer. Yung's decision comes just days before the Jockey Club's licensing committee was set to make an announcement on his future. At 66, Yung has reached the Jockey Club's compulsory retirement age and as he has not met the criteria required for an extension, it has looked for some time like this season would be his last. Yung will retire with his head held high after making a strong return to the track following a period of absence last year as he battled acute myeloid leukaemia. Since his return to the races in November, Yung has had his stable ticking over solidly with 17 winners. Trainer Benno Yung after a recent winner. After starting out as a jockey in Hong Kong before becoming an assistant trainer in 1991, Yung went onto post an impressive 37 wins in his first season training in 2013-14 before landing a personal-best return of 39 victories in the 2021-22 campaign. He sits on a total of 358 successes with 10 meetings remaining in his final season, 18 of which have come in 2024-25 so far. Victorious at two of the past three meetings – including the triumph of $18.1 chance Aeris Nova in Sunday night's finale at Sha Tin – Yung will no doubt be keen to keep cashing in while he can. He has five runners at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, including Day Day Victory in the Class Four Sheung Wan Handicap (1,000m). Victorious twice at the course and distance in Class Five in recent months, Day Day Victory was sent off the $4.4 favourite for his return to Class Four on May 21, however he could only manage seventh. Alexis Badel sticks with the four-year-old for Wednesday night's contest and the French jockey has barrier three at his disposal aboard a galloper who will carry only 118lb. In other news, jockey Angus Chung Yik-lai will head to Happy Valley with a reduced claim after riding his 95th winner at Sha Tin on Sunday. Successful aboard the Tony Cruz-trained Star Satyr while claiming 3lb on the weekend, Chung will now only have the benefit of a 2lb allowance as he builds his career win tally. Chung has five chances to continue his push towards a century of successes on Wednesday night, jumping aboard Yung-trained debutant A La Champ as well as Happy United, Wah May Wai Wai, Embraces and Loaded With Fluke. Chung has picked up a handy one in last-start winner Embraces, who rises in grade for the Class Two Cheung Sha Handicap (1,650m). Embraces has been assigned just 118lb off a rating of 80, meaning Chung steps in for Jerry Chau Chun-lok.

Montemurro named new Australia women's football coach

Montemurro named new Australia women's football coach Montemurro's appointment ends a 10-month search for the Matildas. File photo: AFP Joe Montemurro has been appointed as head coach of the Australia women's team, returning home after a successful decade in Europe with Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon. The 55-year-old, who steered French powerhouses Lyon to their fourth consecutive women's league title last month, said it was "the honour of a lifetime". "This team means so much to so many Australians, and I'm humbled by the opportunity to help shape its next chapter," he said. "I've followed their incredible journey closely and am energised by the passion, resilience, and identity they've built." The Matildas captivated the nation and won legions of new fans with their run to the last four of the World Cup on home soil in 2023. But an underwhelming Paris Olympics last year saw Tony Gustavsson depart and they have been without a permanent head coach since. Tom Sermanni, a 70-year-old Scot, has been in temporary charge during a protracted recruitment process, with the side sliding to 16th in the world. "Joe brings world-class experience, a deep understanding of the Australian football landscape, and a genuine connection to our national identity," said Football Australia interim chief Heather Garriock. "Importantly, he has spent the last decade coaching at the very highest levels of the women's game in Europe and brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football," she added. Montemurro, who won trophies with women's teams at Lyon, Juventus, Arsenal and Melbourne City, will lead the Matildas to the Asian Cup on home soil next year, then through qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup.
