'I missed a lot of hundreds, I should have scored more': Sourav Ganguly's biggest regret
KOLKATA: He is the owner of 38 fantastic centuries in international cricket, but that number is not pleasing to former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who regrets missing many hundreds during his cricketing journey.
The elegant left-hander of his times, Ganguly scored 18575 runs in Test and ODIs but regrets missing many centuries in his career in which he competed in 311 ODIs and 113 Tests.
Ganguly's remorse came to fore when he was asked what advise he would give to his old self.
"I missed a lot of hundreds, I should have scored more. Too many 90s and 80s," Ganguly told PTI in an interaction.
A look at his statistics showed that Ganguly got out in the 80s and 90s a number of times. Exact 30 times.
If he could convert those innings into centuries he would have easily scored 50-plus centuries in his already glorious career.
He loves watching his old innings, his strokeplay whenever he is alone and it further reminds him how close he was to getting more hundreds.
"I see my (batting) videos when I am alone. When my wife is away because Sara lives in London. I go to Youtube, and watch and say 'arre fir 70 pe out ho gaya' (Gosh, I got out for 70 in this also), should have scored a hundred. But you can't change it."
In ODIs, Ganguly had 72 half centuries and in Test the number stands at 35. As a skipper sometimes a tough call become imperative. You have to drop a player to accommodate someone who you think is more suited for conditions or requirement.
Ganguly regretted dropping Anil Kumble, one of the greatest leg spinners in the world.
"Anil Kumble, a few times, because he was so good," he said.
For Ganguly, Australia was his favourite rival side and pacer Glenn McGrath the most feared bowler.

'Ate And Left': Rohit, Harbhajan Reveal India Star Came To Their Weddings Empty-Handed
Last Updated: Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma humorously recalled ex-India teammate attending their weddings, enjoying himself, but leaving empty-handed. Harbhajan Singh and Rohit Sharma have called out former teammate Shikhar Dhawan for coming empty-handed to their weddings and leaving after eating, drinking, and having an 'absolute blast'. Former spinner Harbhajan married his longtime girlfriend, actress Geeta Basra, on 29 October 2015 in Jalandhar. Rohit and Ritika Sajdeh got married on December 13 in the same year in Mumbai. Dhawan was Rohit's opening partner at that time, and the duo was considered one of the most feared in white-ball cricket, having found success in an overall disappointing 2015 World Cup. 'Shikhar Dhawan came to our wedding," Harbhajan recalled on his a YouTube show with Geeta called, Who's The Boss? 'He danced a lot, ate, drank, had an absolute blast. And while leaving, he slipped in an envelope in my pocket. Maine kaha, 'ye kya kar raha hai?'. Maine woh khola na, 101 chorh, ek rupiya nahi tha. Khaali. (I said there was no need. When I opened it, forget 101 rupees, it didn't even have one rupee. It was totally empty!) In Indian culture, shagun envelopes are given as a symbol of blessings. They are generally filled with cash, accompanied by a one-rupee coin. After narrating the story, Harbhajan asked Rohit and Ritika if Dhawan gave them anything. 'Kuch nahi. Naachke, khaake, aur peeke gaya tha (Nothing. He danced, ate, drank, and just left)," Rohit replied, prompting all four of them to break into laughter. But Rohit made sure to praise Dhawan, too, calling him a 'class' person. They scored 5,148 runs together in 115 innings, making them the fourth-highest opening partnership in terms of runs in ODI history 'Woh bhi kya banda hai, class! (What a guy he his, class) From childhood, we have been playing together, and we have done a lot of tours together. Before playing for India, we had done a tour to Australia for India A," Rohit said. Dhawan retired from all forms of competitive cricket in August last year. Rohit has also hung up his T20I and Test boots but continues to be available in ODI cricket, where he's also the team captain. He's said to be hoping to remain fit for the 2027 World Cup. Sourav Ganguly fires subtle shots at Siraj, Prasidh, Shardul after Jasprit Bumrah's solo act increases India's worry
Jun 23, 2025 04:40 PM IST There's Jasprit Bumrah, then daylight and then the rest. That's what India's bowling attack has resembled thus far in the first Test between India and England in Headingley. Bumrah was once again the standout performer with the ball, finishing with 5/83 – his 14th five-wicket-haul in Tests – but the lack of support from the other was startling. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, the other two frontline pacers leaked over 100 runs each, combining to gave away 245 runs for four wickets. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, picked in the team ahead of Nitish Reddy and Arshdeep Singh, bowled just six overs for 38 runs. Sourav Ganguly expects more from Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna(PTI Images) Some of India's bowling and tactical blunders did not make sense, especially how lacklustre Siraj and Prasidh were. Sachin Tendulkar, after England were dismissed for 465, summed up the situation perfectly when he took a subtle dig at India's fielders – who dropped six catches, including two really tough chances, and joining him in raising concern towards the Men in Blue is his former opening partner Sourav Ganguly, who wished for more support Siraj, Prasidh and Shardul. The former India captain felt the only reason Bumrah can play all five Tests is if his fellow pacers contribute significantly. "Such a pleasure to watch Bumrah bowl in all formats of the game. Hopefully, he will get support from the other end so that he can play 5 Tests. It will keep India in the series," posted Ganguly on X. Bharat Arun pointed out the same thing Even before the series began, Bumrah was all but confirmed not to play all five Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Because the last time he did, Bumrah broke his back and was out injured for three months. In the lead-up to the series, former India bowling coach Bharat Arun has pointed out something similar: that the rest of the pacers can up their game and do their bit, Bumrah would be required a lot less, thus increasing his chances of playing all five Tests.
