Tolkien Triangle in East Yorkshire will honour Hobbit author
The author who wrote the classic fantasy tales The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is being honoured with a new sculpture trail.JRR Tolkien spent almost 18 years in Hull and East Yorkshire recovering from trench fever after World War One.The landscape of the area is said to have been the influence of some of his stories, and now it is being recognised with North Lincolnshire-based artist Allen Stichler's oak statues.East Riding of Yorkshire councillor Barbara Jefferson said the sculptures, which are due to be unveiled in spring, will "celebrate a literacy legacy".
"Commissioned in memory of a remarkable author whose deep ties to East Yorkshire continue to inspire, this striking sculpture embodies a unique initiative," she said.''It not only celebrates a cherished literary legacy but also positions the Holderness region on both national and international stages, promising to invigorate the local visitor economy and attract a growing number of tourists in the coming years.''The sculptures have been crafted in oak from the Sotterley Estate, near Beccles, Suffolk, and funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Route Yorkshire Coast.The trail, called The Tolkien Triangle, will include two new sculptures in Roos, between Hornsea and Withernsea.
One of the hand-carved oak statues will be of Tolkien's wife, Edith, depicting a memory from the summer of 1917 when she danced for him in a wood near the village.The other statue will be of Tolkien standing in the woods as a young man.The statues come ahead of the return of television series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and a film next year, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Hungry Americans and fascinated tourists regularly flock to the 100,000 sq ft buffet to try and take on the world's biggest buffet. In recent years it has even become famous on social media through food bloggers and popular influencers. One of these is New York-based influencer Amorray Marcano who visited Shady Maple back in April. She told The Sun: "I'm a content creator so I like to show cool things in the New York area and around it and I had no clue that the largest buffet in America was so close to me. "So I wanted to go just because of its reputation of being the largest and serving up to 10,000 people in a day." Amorray, 29, filmed her trip and posted it online to her 440,000 Instagram followers. She said one of her biggest concerns going into the buffet was the quality of the food. Most people usually head down to a buffet as a novelty dining experience where they can fill their plates high and try out as much food as their stomachs can handle. But the food is typically seen as below par due to it usually being left out under a heat lamp for some time before being eaten. Amorray said she was "pleasantly surprised" by the taste of the food on offer. She admitted: "There were hits and misses, but there were certain things that were actually really good. "The night I went they were serving catfish. And I don't really eat catfish normally, but thought I'll try it and it was so good. "It was cooked really well and just delicious. "There were some things that I didn't love. I would say some things might've been a little dry or some things maybe needed a little bit more seasoning. "But the things that were good were great, like their beef brisket, the steak and of course the cajun catfish." The breakfast costs just $13.99 (£10) during the week and lunch will set you back $19.99 (£15). The price for dinner varies depending on exactly what type of food you want to treat yourself to but a standard price is $26.99 (£20). This encompasses grill items, 46 salad bar items, three soups, six homemade breads & rolls, four cheeses, eight different meats, 14 vegetables, ten cold desserts, three hot desserts, eight pies, six cakes, sundae bar and countless drinks. Special options are also available throughout the week including steak night, seafood night, wings night or even the grand menu. There were hits and misses, but there were certain things that were actually really good Amorray Marcano Amorray was amazed by the cheap price of the unlimited food. She continued: "I would see people sit down, they would eat, and then they would go back for more and you could stay for as long as you want. "So realistically, you could stay there for hours so it's a great bang for your buck. "For the night that I went, it was like $27 and the amount of food you get for that is easily worth way more than the price." One thing that did leave a sour taste in Amorray's mouth was just how busy the buffet was. Amorray and her friend queued up for 30 minutes outside at around dinner time due to the long line of excited guests. The influencer was mainly shocked by this due to its little known location. Not only is East Earl a tight knit community in Amish country but it also has a population of under 2,000 people. You could stay there for hours so it's a great bang for your buck Amorray Marcano This means the town can sometimes be packed out with over five times the number of residents due to the popularity of the restaurant. "When I went in, I thought there's not going to be that much seating. But then once I walked in, there was loads in every, nook and cranny," Amorray added. "There must have been thousands of people in there and I was not expecting that just because we already had a 30 minute wait and there was a huge line behind us. "Honestly I was kind of overwhelmed when I went in because I was expecting the amount of food but not the amount of people." But after tucking into her first plate, Amorray said she fully understood why so many people flocked to the world famous Pennsylvania buffet. The Grove Hotel in Hertfordshire went viral earlier last year when TikTok foodies discovered its Glasshouse restaurant where everyone dines en masse, but in five-star luxury. Costing a whopping £82 per person at the weekend, there is certainly enough to choose from. After several, overly-generous spoonfuls of caviar, a few servings of beetroot-cured salmon and seven superbly crafted sushi rolls, decorated with dainty herbs, I felt I'd made a good dent in 'getting my money's worth' – a statement that had been thrown back and forth between my buffet partner, Mum, and I. I prowled the platters of sizzling Asian grub arranged temptingly in tandoor bowls and loaded into terracotta dishes, before heading straight for the crispy Thai fish cakes. The fish section was part of one of 10 dining areas at the buffet. This includes a carving station, AKA the place to pick up your classic roast dinner and trimmings with slices of rare roast beef, flakey wellington and crispy roast spuds all laid out with gravy. There was a sushi station with hand-made California rolls placed delicately alongside huge tubs of wasabi and seaweed salads. The robata grill is where everything from whole seabass to juicy steaks are scorched over an open flame and there's also fresh pasta and pizza stations. If all this isn't enough to wrap your head around, you can also order directly from the chefs, doting on each station, when there is something in particular that you fancy that isn't on display. So the real question is: would you pay that much cash for dinner? Much like the food on offer at the buffet, Shady Maple provided almost every kind of soft drink imaginable. The star of the drinks show was a huge soda fountain to the side of the room. This had all kinds of soda in it from cream soda, vanilla coke and even root beer as well as all the regular options. A coffee machine, hot chocolate station and milkshake stand meant everyone's taste was catered for. Alcohol was the only notable exception on the menu. And no tipping is expected at the restaurant. Fringe 2025 – local theatre company producing two shows
Edinburgh-based Arbery Theatre is bringing two new and very different productions to this year's Fringe. A Pound of Flesh offers an imaginative take on Shakespeare's classic The Merchant of Venice. In this new version lawyer-in-disguise Portia does not make it to court to save Antonio's life. With echoes of the events in Romeo and Juliet and combining the original text of The Merchant with language and imagery in Shakespeare's style, A Pound of Flesh moves inexorably towards a tragic end. Arbery's second production, Transfers, follows £500 as that sum of money passes from one person to the next in a kaleidoscope of life in Britain today. In a play devised by the actors, eight short scenes reveal very different characters, situations and emotions. The twist? The money goes round and round in a never-ending circle. The second twist? Scenes are presented in random order so the audience is never sure who or what is coming next. Eleven actors, including long-standing professionals and talented newcomers, come together for the three week run of both plays in one of the Fringe's most popular venues – theSpace on the Mile. They include Shakespeare specialist Danielle Farrow as Shylock in A Pound of Flesh, Kirsten Maguire as an Older Woman in Transfers, and Michael Robert-Brown, who appears in both plays and directs Transfers. Among the younger generation are Ollie Hiemann (Bassanio in A Pound of Flesh) – a regular on the Edinburgh stage, most recently as Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk – and Millie Deere (Portia in A Pound of Fleshand Young Woman in Transfers). Behind the scenes is playwright / director Martin Foreman. Martin created A Pound of Fleshwith some help from the Bard of Avon and came up with the concept of Transfers based on the notorious Arthur Schnitzler play La Ronde. Martin's last outing as director was J B Priestley's A Pound of Flesh (4 stars from All Edinburgh Theatre). His plays have been produced by several companies in Scotland, England and Germany, including the thriller Taiwan, the comedy Delivery! and the picaresque The Satyricon. Sound design for both A Pound of Flesh and Transfers is by Dug Campbell; lighting for both plays is by Freya Game. Arbery Theatre is an occasional group of theatre creatives. They previously produced The Satyricon in Edinburgh in 2022 (with EGTG); they last appeared at the Fringe in 2019. When we got the email to tell us, it was just amazing. I'd never even thought about playing there. The fact that it's next door to Oasis playing at Murrayfield Stadium is really surreal. It's huge, and just very surreal with what's happening next door when we are playing in the ice rink. I used to love ice skating, I got into it in Livingston and when that closed I started coming here to skate also. I then got into music and going out, so the ice skating faded away. 'Liam' and 'Noel' from Livingston-based Oasis tribute band Definitely Oasis. | National World We are all Oasis fanboys, so to think they will be in the stadium doing a soundcheck and we will be here playing the same songs at the same time, it's mind-blowing. We don't suppose we will get a bigger gig than playing next door to Oasis. We've played to bigger crowds at festivals and big arenas, but this is incredible and the most excited we've been about playing a gig. We knew there was a demand to hear Oasis songs live given they split in 2009, but we didn't realise how big it was. The band were gone but the fans weren't, and they were still mad for it! We only played local gigs to start with, before we knew it we were all over the country and then the world. We absolutely love doing what we do for a job. We get in character on stage, with a bit of needle between our Liam and Noel, a bit of pantomime. Sometimes the egos take over on stage and we just get lost in the moment, forget we aren't actually Oasis! Acting is a big part of it, not just playing the tunes, but being them also. We are quite happy guys, so sometimes we have to remember to be a bit mean and moody on stage. When the intro of the first song kicks in, especially if it's a good crowd, it's a great buzz to keep the music alive. Sometimes the hairs on the back of our necks stand up. There are so many layers to it. The first thing is everyone in the band are huge Oasis fans, we get to play the tunes we grew up with. And we're in a great band with great musicians, we sound great. Playing in front of great and very appreciative fans, it's such a buzz, and we never get sick of it. Oasis were our band growing up, and still are. They mean so much to us. Even since they announced their return the demand is still there for us to play. Everyone is so excited Oasis are back. It's amazing they are back, biblical. But when Noel had his divorce I really thought for the first time that it could happen, and here we are. We are so excited to see the set lists when they kick-off the reunion tour next month. And they have done really well to keep the media blanket since the announcement. I hope there is a wee spark between them on stage. I hope they show passion. It would be nice to see some brotherly love, and it's not just a big pay day. The tribute act spoke of their love for Oasis and revealed their excitement at playing these special Edinburgh gigs. | National World We were always busy, but since the reunion news broke last year the bookings have went through the roof. We are playing constantly this year and probably next year as well. It's great that Oasis have still got that pull, just like the Beatles really. We have not met Liam and Noel yet, but we met Oasis bassist Andy Bell once at an after-show. We would love to meet them, not sure what we would say though. They are the reason we are into music and musicians. We would just love to say thank you for teaching us music. Oasis changed everything when they came out, not just music, fashion, everything. It's hard to overestimate the impact they had on us and that generation. You never know, we might meet them at Murrayfield when we are both playing there?
