There would have been few better contenders than Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) if a spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs were to be decided based on how well a team starts and finishes the campaign.
While SRH slammed 286 in their league opener against Rajasthan Royals (RR), they smashed 231 and 278 respectively in their final two matches against RCB and KKR. SRH finished their campaign with a mammoth 110-run win and are currently sixth on the points table.

Unfortunately for SRH fans, the IPL 2025 playoffs race does take into account consistency, an area where the Pat Cummins-led side failed miserably. While SRH players like Cummins, Travis Head and
Heinrich Klaasen
expressed great confidence in the side's ability to post a historic 300-run total, teams quickly figured out a solution to their ultra-aggressive approach.
The Hyderabad-based franchise's triumph in their IPL 2025 opener was followed by a four-match losing streak against LSG, DC, KKR and GT. A win against PBKS failed to transform fortunes which majorly came back to haunt SRH.

While opposition bowling attacks managed to figure out a solution to keep the SRH batters quiet, the Hyderabad-based team also didn't enjoy batting-friendly wickets like IPL 2024. Another major reason behind the IPL 2024 finalists failing to make their presence felt was the performance of openers Travis Head and
Abhishek Sharma
. The duo set the stands on fire in IPL 2024, smashing 1,051 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 197.2 with 74 sixes. However, their overall tally reduced to 813 runs in 13 IPL 2025 matches at a strike rate of 177.9 with an alarming decline to 43 sixes. Their dot ball percentage in the current season stands at 37.2 which is certainly higher than IPL 2024's tally of 32.3%.
Abhishek emerged as the better performer between the duo, smashing 439 runs in comparison to Head's 374.

While Klaasen finishes as the team's top run-getter with 487 runs, even the South African battled a streak of inconsistency with his unbeaten 105 in the final match against KKR adding respectability.
Similarly, Ishan Kishan started off with a ton in the first match but finishes with a tally of just 354 runs. Kishan particularly came into the limelight due to a brain-fade moment against MI where he walked off despite being not-out.
The franchise badly missed the presence of an all-rounder like Shahbaz Ahmed who could provide stability down the order especially considering a poor campaign for Nitish Reddy, who scored 182 runs in 13 matches.

Cummins and Harshal Patel finished as SRH's top wicket-takers with 16 wickets each, with the former making a late comeback having initially picked 10 wickets in as many matches. However, SRH badly missed the variety of left-arm pacer T Natarajan who had picked 19 wickets in IPL 2024, especially considering a poor display by
Mohammad Shami
who recorded six dismissals.
An overall lack of balance in the squad buildup raised eyebrows, with the absence of an experienced spinner capable of throttling the opposition drawing attention. "With the calibre of the players we have, we can't play any worse than what we did earlier," said Cummins, summing up a season where SRH promised a lot but delivered precious little.

Bengaluru stampede: ‘Everything that could go wrong, went wrong'
Everything that could go wrong seems to have gone wrong at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here, where lakhs converged to catch a glimpse of the RCB team on Wednesday afternoon. Even as the city police claimed that Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) conducted the event at the stadium despite being denied police permission, it has come to light that the security deployment at the venue was inadequate and senior officials in charge were not present on site when the stampede occurred, sources said. Two permissions In a suo motu FIR registered at Cubbon Park Police Station on Thursday, the police claimed that on the evening of June 3, the KSCA authorities approached them seeking permission to hold a celebratory event if RCB won the IPL title, but their request was denied. Similarly, the State government, on the evening of June 3rd, sought police permission to hold a felicitation for the team on the grand steps of the Vidhana Soudha if RCB won the championship, and it was granted. Police, however, said that despite the denial of permission, RCB management took to social media on Wednesday morning announcing a victory parade, exhorting fans to congregate. Police deployment Meanwhile, in a submission made by the State government to the High Court during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition, the government said that as against a usual deployment of 789 personnel at the stadium during IPL cricket matches, they had deployed 1,318 personnel, including four companies of the Karnataka State Reserve Police Force (KSRP). While the deployment was over 67% higher than usual, it proved to be woefully inadequate compared to the strength of the crowd that gathered. Usually, a match has a crowd size of around 35,000. However, the crowd at the stadium on Wednesday is estimated to be around 2.5 lakh. Around 3.30 p.m., the stadium gates were opened and people were let in, but the gates were shut once the stadium was full. People in lakhs demanded to be let inside a stadium with a seating capacity of only 32,000, causing a commotion that further led to a stampede. When crowds merged 'There was ample scope to mobilise more forces from within Bengaluru and also the surrounding districts to be deployed at the stadium, but it was not done. The size of the crowd that gathered at the stadium was clearly underestimated. Moreover, the crowd that gathered in front of the Vidhana Soudha moved and joined those around the stadium. Ideally, there should have been barricading and the two crowds should not have been allowed to merge,' said a senior police official who was not part of the arrangements on Wednesday. Many senior police officers have also been puzzled as to why there was no bid to disperse the mob around the stadium that was thrusting at the closed stadium gates. Officials absent on scene Multiple sources within the city police stated that the senior official responsible for security at the stadium was not present at the scene when the stampede occurred, but was instead at the Vidhana Soudha. 'With no senior jurisdictional officers at the spot, a decision to lathicharge and disperse the mob was not taken in time,' a senior official said. The magisterial inquiry into the lapses in security will now ascertain the specific duties assigned to officers, their locations throughout the day, and the discharge of their duties, according to sources.

"Overpaid...": RCB Legend AB De Villiers' Shock Revelation After IPL 2025 Triumph
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title on Tuesday, as they beat Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 final. Despite having had exceptional T20 cricketers like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the past, it was the first time in 18 years that RCB won the title. While Gayle and de Villiers were present to celebrate with RCB, former India cricketer-turned-broadcaster Abhinav Mukund revealed an interesting remark that de Villiers had made to him, where he had said that he felt he was overpaid during his time as a player in the IPL. "I was sitting next to AB de Villiers and he told me something that I don't think any legend in the IPL has said. But he genuinely meant it, he said it from a place of emotion. He said 'I was overpaid'," Mukund revealed. "I'm overpaid, I thought I was overpaid because I feel like all of the other elements that you're talking about, right? Where you're able to buy so many other superstar players, all those match winners you're talking about. The highest amount of money that they spent on was for someone like a Phil Salt or Josh Hazlewood. They didn't cross 15 (Rs 15 crore)," was what de Villiers had told Mukund, as revealed by the latter. De Villiers was retained twice by RCB ahead of a mega auction over the course of his 11-year stint with the franchise. In an era where valuations where lesser, de Villiers was retained for Rs 7.50 crore and Rs 11 crore in 2014 and 2018 respectively. While RCB did not spend Rs 12.50 crore on any player at the mega auction, they did retain Virat Kohli for Rs 21 crore. They also went up to Rs 23.50 crore to try and get Venkatesh Iyer, who landed up in Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 23.75 crore. Mukund stated that not getting Venkatesh ended up working in RCB's favour, given that he scored just 142 runs in 11 matches in IPL 2025. "In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn't go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys.
