Thankful for community: This year's Pay It Forward a step forward for Angelica Figueroa Gonzalez and her children

Yahoo22-03-2025

Mar. 21—The looks on the faces of siblings Ashley and Alex Lagunas Figueroa told the entire story when they walked into their home alongside their mom Angelica Figueroa Gonzalez Friday evening.
Their home was even more of one and thanks to this year's Pay It Forward effort they both now had bedrooms of their own.
"The kids had always wanted better things in their home and now that they have it. The feeling is unexplainable to see my kids happy and getting what they deserve," Gonzalez said. "How the community can come together and have it come out of their heart is that feeling of greatness of helping other people."
In previous projects the bathroom has traditionally been the focal point of any Pay It Forward project, and while that was again the case this year, it was also the case that the rest of the house and yard also saw a vast amount of work including replacing doors, windows, flooring, kitchen appliances and so much more in the house.
Outside the house, both the house and garage received new roofs and the yard and trees were groomed.
Unlike many of the years past, this particular week didn't do a lot to contribute to a smooth work flow, however. The scope of the work done was greater than it has been in years past and the midweek blizzard did nothing to make things easier. The entire thing led to volunteers shoring up some of the final touches in a flurry of work Friday as the limo carrying Gonzalez and her children pulled up outside of the home.
Still, it couldn't take away from the effort and the gratitude in the family's heart.
"I don't have any words," Gonzalez said. "I'm just thankful for everybody in this community."
The effect of the work was just as impactful for Mark Walski, who nominated the family for this year's project. What started with just an effort to get the family proper heating, grew to something more for Walski, who has known the family through Pacelli Catholic Schools.
Walski said that initially those with connections through the school were coming together to do what they could for the family by offering to do various jobs here and there, but eventually the scope of the work became too much.
It was then that Walski decided to nominate the family for this year's Pay It Forward project.
"It was fun to be able to see the kids have this redone," Walski said. "That's kind of why we did it."
As with previous years, this year's project left something for the volunteers as well. The happiness in the eyes of Alex and Ashley and how it affected Gonzalez was just as impactful.
"Every year people have gotten emotional, but watching her, and knowing she works and what she can't provide in doing that and making that work for her kids — It's not a simple task," said Pay It Forward's Gina Grundmeier. "It's not something on a single person's income where you can do all of the things that need to be done. I thought that was important to do for her and the kids."
There was also the added joy of seeing some of the past recipients on hand to help throughout the week.
"That's been great and it's been super important because it's been such an insanely busted week," Grundmeier said. "These have been some insanely long, agonizing nights."
Despite the week's hiccups, the challenges and strains, the reward of the Friday reveal was felt by everyone who helped in the effort.
Gonzalez summed up that gratitude by saying Pay It Forward will help her family take the next steps into the future.
"It's just the simple thing of being able to have people in my community close to me that can help me and know my past and my life and know this helps me move forward," she said. "I just want to thank everybody and I really appreciate everybody that is a part of this program."

Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez snubbed, again, in latest rankings

Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez snubbed, again, in latest rankings New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez was snubbed in another Pro Football Focus rankings list. This time, he was not listed in the top 10 of the top-32 cornerbacks rankings compiled on the site. Gonzalez did make the list, coming in at No. 13. However, one would think he should have cracked the top 10 after making the All-Pro Second-Team last season. He was also recently left off PFF's top 25 players under the age of 25 list. "Let the play talk," Gonzalez responded, when asked about being left off the previous PFF list. Gonzalez had a stellar season in 2024, recording 59 tackles, 11 past deflections, two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Although he earned an All-Pro nod, he was snubbed in the Pro Bowl voting. So people overlooking Gonzalez isn't anything new. PFF's John Kosko wrote: "After missing most of his rookie season due to injury, Gonzalez started the 2024 campaign slowly before catching fire in Week 4 against the 49ers. He played man coverage at a 50.1% rate last season and earned a 78.2 PFF coverage grade, which ranked ninth among cornerbacks." Gonzalez will undoubtedly let his play do the talking. He could be even more dominant in Year 3 with an improved Patriots defense and veteran cornerback Carlton Davis III lining up on the other side. The duo could formulate one of the best cornerback tandems in the NFL. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

State Trooper injured after fleeing driver ‘intentionally rammed' cruiser during I-81 chase

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Pennsylvania State Trooper was injured when a driver 'intentionally rammed' his cruiser during a chase on I-81 in Dauphin County over the weekend, court documents show. Angel Gonzalez, 52, of Delaware County, allegedly led a seven-mile chase that began in Cumberland County when a Trooper tried pulling him over for multiple violations, State Police at Harrisburg said in court documents. Eighteen people cited for underage alcohol at York County Expo Center event Spike strips were used in an attempt to stop Gonzalez, who was driving a 2002 Nissan Maxima, according to Troopers. A 'PIT Maneuver' brought Gonzalez to a brief stop while on the interstate in the Harrisburg City area, but he allegedly began driving away in the wrong direction down a small embankment and into the center median, Troopers said. Court documents show Gonzalez allegedly rammed a Trooper's vehicle 'intentionally' on the shoulder of I-81, causing a back injury to the Trooper. State Police say Gonzalez admitted to smoking crack cocaine, and he was traveling in the area to buy drugs. Troopers said they also found a crack pipe in his vehicle. Close Thanks for signing up! Bond set for Grapevine Lake jet ski crash suspects

The Brief The woman accused in a Grapevine Lake jet ski hit-and-run crash had her bond set at $500,000. The man who helped her flee the crime scene has a $3,000 bond. But because both now have an immigration hold, they will stay in custody if they post bond. GRAPEVINE, Texas - A bond amount has been set for the two undocumented migrants accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash on Grapevine Lake on Memorial Day weekend. But they are not likely to get out of jail any time soon. What we know Several political officials and immigration authorities pushed for "no bond to be assigned" to 21-year-olds Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez and Maikel Coello Perozo following the death of 18-year-old Ava Moore. But a magistrate on Thursday set Gonzalez's bond for a manslaughter charge at $500,000. Perozo's bond was set at a little more than $3,000 for his misdemeanor charges, including hindering apprehension and an accident involving damage to a vehicle. However, both suspects now have an immigration hold on them. Dig deeper The immigration hold means that if the suspects do post bond, they will stay in custody until they answer the state charges against them or until they are deported. United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials would pick them up if either posted bond and take them to a federal facility, or they could stay in the Tarrant County jail, where they are now. What's next Moore's funeral service will be held in North Texas on Saturday. Moore was just weeks away from starting basic training for the U.S. military, a dream her friends and family said she was proud to pursue. She had recently graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and was home visiting her parents in North Texas for Memorial Day. The U.S. Air Force will conduct full military honors at the end of her service. Her family has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their daughter. The backstory The crash happened near Oak Grove Park on Grapevine Lake on the evening of May 25. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, two women were on a jet ski that was traveling at a high rate of speed and dangerously close to other people in the water. Witnesses told investigators that Moore and other kayakers tried to paddle away before she was struck from behind. The 18-year-old victim suffered severe head trauma. She was pulled to shore by bystanders, then taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries. Authorities said a passenger on the jet ski stayed at the scene and spoke with first responders. But the driver, later identified as Gonzalez, got into a vehicle with a man, later identified as Perozo. Several parked vehicles were hit as the pair drove away from the scene. Witnesses provided officers with photos and videos taken immediately after the accident, and a tip line was later set up to identify the suspects, receiving more than 900 tips. The arrest affidavit says that Gonzalez and Perozo were identified based on tips and facial recognition software. Both suspects entered the country illegally from Venezuela, according to ICE. ICE officials said they were both arrested at the time of their entry, processed for a notice to appear, then released on their own recognizance. ICE said both are now in removal proceedings. The Source The information in this story comes from Grapevine police, ICE officials, Tarrant County court records, and past news coverage.
