Kannur University's internal mark entry system collapses
The internal mark entry system for the second semester of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) at Kannur University has collapsed, as the Kerala Resources for Education Administration and Planning (K-REAP) Software, operated by Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL), has become non-functional. This has left teachers unable to upload marks.
The failure, coming amid ongoing errors in the university's examination system, has further deepened the academic crisis. This is the second major malfunction of MKCL's software at the university. Following the malfunction, the university, in a letter dated 11 April, extended the deadline for all affiliated colleges by rescheduling the submission date for internal marks from April 23 to May 5.
Kannur University had earlier sparked controversy by handing over crucial functions, including student admissions and examinations, to MKCL without a legally binding contract — a first in Kerala. MKCL's inability to manage internal mark submission for the second semester has raised serious concerns about the reliability of upcoming academic processes.
Teachers' bodies like Kerala Private College Teachers' Association and UDF Senators Forum had earlier warned that relying on MKCL's system could lead to catastrophic failure. They had urged the university during its annual Senate meeting to reconsider its engagement with MKCL, labelling the company as unreliable.
The continuing technical failures have fuelled fresh demands for the university to terminate its association with MKCL and implement more robust systems to safeguard academic integrity.

Kim Soo Hyun scores major legal win against Garosero as court orders seizure of Kim Se Ui's Seoul apartments worth $2.9 million
The Seoul Central District Court has approved the seizure of two high-value apartments owned by Kim Se Ui, 48, CEO of the controversial Garosero Research Institute, following a lawsuit filed by Gold Medalist, the agency representing actor Kim Soo Hyun, 37. According to K-media outlet Money Today, the court's decision, issued on the 9th, targets a 120.27㎡ unit in Seocho Byeoksan Blooming (Seocho-gu) and a 208.65㎡ unit in Hanyang 4th Apartment (Gangnam-gu), both owned by Kim Se Ui. Since the Gangnam property is co-owned with his sister, only Kim's 50% stake was seized. The total claim amounts to 4 billion KRW (approx. USD 2.9 million)—2 billion KRW for each property. Garosero's role in Kim Soo Hyun's dating scandal Garosero Research Institute gained notoriety earlier this year after exposing allegations that Kim Soo Hyun had an inappropriate relationship with the late actress Kim Sae Ron when she was a minor. The controversy erupted when Kim Sae Ron's aunt claimed the actor had been involved with her niece when she was just 15, while he was 27. Kim Soo Hyun denied the underage dating allegations but admitted to a relationship with Kim Sae Ron only after she turned 19 (Korean age). However, Garosero escalated the scandal by releasing intimate photos of the two, including a nude photo of Kim Soo Hyun, intensifying public scrutiny. Legal repercussions & financial fallout Gold Medalist, Kim Soo Hyun's agency, retaliated with lawsuits against Kim Se Ui and Kim Sae Ron's family for defamation and violating the Sexual Violence Punishment Act, seeking 12 billion KRW (approx. $8.7 million USD) in damages. Legal experts suggest that if the court rules against Garosero, Kim Se Ui and the bereaved family could face joint liability, meaning they may share financial responsibility regardless of individual involvement. Financial complications: Mortgages & market value Despite the seizure, creditors may not recover the full claimed amount. Kim Se Ui had already mortgaged both properties for a combined 5.022 billion KRW (approx. USD 3.6 million). Seocho Byeoksan Blooming (2.5 billion KRW market value): Mortgaged for 1.32 billion KRW. Hanyang 4th Apartment (8.87 billion KRW total value; 4.4 billion KRW for Kim's 50% stake): Mortgaged for 3.7 billion KRW. With the seizure claim (4 billion KRW) and existing loans exceeding the properties' market values, Gold Medalist may struggle to recover the full damages sought. Notably, the court's seizure order is provisional, meaning the final amount could change based on Kim Se Ui's defense. However, the case underscores the escalating legal and financial stakes in this high-profile scandal. For now, all eyes remain on the courtroom as Kim Soo Hyun's agency continues its pursuit of justice and compensation against Garosero's explosive claims. China Bans Bank From Luring Depositors With Popular Labubu Dolls
A Chinese lender's stunt to woo depositors with gifts including the wildly popular Labubu dolls has been barred by financial regulators, underscoring the increasingly fraught battle among banks for customers as interest rates and profit margins fall. The Zhejiang branch of the National Financial Regulatory Administration has asked local banks to refrain from giving non-compliant perks to attract deposits, according to people familiar with the matter. The guidance came in the wake of a promotion by Ping An Bank Co., which has been offering Labubu collectibles — blind box toys endorsed by celebrities including Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink — in multiple cities for new depositors who can park in 50,000 yuan for three months. Such a practice, which often involves offering free items like rice or small home appliances, as well as e-gifts such as memberships at Internet platforms, was seen as driving up costs at banks and hurting their margins, said the people, who asked not to be named discussing a private matter. While Ping An Bank's marketing campaign went viral on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu and sparked strong interest from potential savers, it also drew criticism from state media which said it was 'not a long-term solution.' Chinese lenders are walking a tightrope as they balance between deposit taking and protecting margins that are now at record-low levels across the sector. The nation's big banks just conducted a new round of deposit rate cuts in May, with smaller peers following suit and pushing term deposit interests down to just a little above 1%. The Zhejiang banking regulator has urged the immediate suspension of any products involved in non-compliant deposit-gathering practices, along with the removal of related promotional materials, the people said. It remains unclear whether the regulator's other local divisions have issued similar guidance. The regulator didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Ping An Bank said the initiative started off as a small-scale project launched by a local branch, declining to comment further. China said in a 2018 rule that commercial banks shouldn't attract deposits through 'inappropriate means' such as giving away physical gifts or returning cash. With assistance from Mengchen Lu.
