British father and son drown after being swept out to sea in Australia

Yahoo14-04-2025

A British father and son have drowned after being swept out to sea during a family holiday in Australia.
The bodies of a 46-year-old man and 17-year-old boy, who have not been named, were discovered on Sunday afternoon in 'choppy' waters off the coast of Seventeen Seventy, a small beach town in central Queensland.
Another man, a 37-year-old local resident, was found with life-threatening injuries and airlifted to hospital for treatment. It is believed he injured his head after jumping into the ocean to help them.
Rescuers flew a helicopter around the town's rocky headlands, searching for the tourists for more than an hour in what they described as a 'difficult mission'.
Crews spotted the pair in separate locations and pulled them from the water, but they could not be revived.
The father and son had been visiting the area on holidays from Wales, local media reported.
Emergency crews were first called to reports they were in trouble near waters close to a popular camping site and walking trails at around 2pm local time.
While swimming is popular at protected beaches near to the headland, water can gush at speeds when the tide changes.
Residents said they had personally been deterred from swimming on Sunday afternoon because of strong winds, describing conditions as 'choppy and scary'.
'Sunday's mission was a difficult one,' a spokesman for the Rescue 300 helicopter said on Sunday.
'Multiple crews were tasked to the scene, including CapRescue.
'Despite the best efforts of all involved, two people tragically lost their lives.'
They added: 'Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident.'
Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
Wayne Mellock, a local surf shop owner, said the local community was devastated at the deaths.
'Situations like this are absolutely horrific,' he told ABC news. 'Our hearts go out to the families... and also the other man that was tragically hurt.'
Known for its pristine beaches and proximity to the southern Great Barrier Reef, Seventeen Seventy is a popular holiday destination, particularly in the run-up to Easter.
'We have a very huge amount of international tourists in our town,' Mr Mellock said.'They love our beaches because we've got the best beaches in the world … but unfortunately they don't realise how quickly things can change in the ocean.'

Balaclava-clad suspects ‘behind £250k handbags theft' caught on CCTV

Police have released images of the balaclava-clad suspects allegedly behind the theft of handbags worth £260,000. A trio of burglars took 55 luxury handbags from a boutique in the exclusive Cheshire village of Prestbury on Sunday night. The ski mask-wearing intruders broke in from a disused property next door, drilling through the shop's chimney to gain access. They then made a getaway with the high-end handbags, worth as much as £25,000 each. Cheshire Constabulary released CCTV images of the suspected burglars on Wednesday in an appeal for members of the public to identify them. Det Con Clare Slattery, of Macclesfield CID, said: 'Enquiries in relation to this incident are ongoing and we're committed to doing all we can to identify the people responsible. 'As part of our investigation we're keen to identify the men pictured in the CCTV images as we believe they may hold vital information. 'If you recognise the men, please contact us. I would also like to appeal directly to the men in the CCTV images to get in touch.' Christine Colbert, the owner of the boutique, watched the burglary live on CCTV from her home. 'I went to bed about 10.30pm on Sunday so I was asleep when we got a call from the monitoring company,' Mrs Colbert told the Daily Mail. 'I immediately switched on the CCTV on my phone and I could see a man crouching down and bricks all over the floor. I said to my husband Gary, 'We're being robbed.' I was panicking.' Mrs Colbert said that watching the footage back, she could hear the noise of drilling for more than an hour before the raiders broke through. She added added: 'They were big burly men, and they were all in black with goggles, balaclavas, and gloves. They took three or four minutes to whirl round the shop and grab all the bags. 'One man had a duvet tied round his neck like a pouch which he threw the bags in. Another man put everything up his arms – they were full of bags. 'Then they hurled the handbags through the hole they'd made. Respect for the bags was zero.' The gang dropped just two of the bags, which were among the least valuable. The next-door building was empty following an arson attack. Items worth £180,000 were stolen from Mrs Colbert's shop last year after burglars entered through a window. Underage drinking party may have preceded Bedford teen's death, chief says

The 17-year-old Bedford High School junior who died in a motor vehicle incident Sunday had been at a party where there may have been underage drinking, police said. The teenage boy, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after police and emergency responders went to Wallace Road around 8:15 p.m. following a report of a person jumping out of a car near Stagecoach Lane. The circumstances that led to the boy's death are still unclear though, Bedford Police Chief Daniel Douidi said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. 'A preliminary investigation indicates that the student, a 17-year-old male, exited a moving vehicle under unclear circumstances while traveling on Wallace Road,' Douidi said. 'The incident appears to have followed a social gathering that may have involved underage drinking. We are and have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the gathering, including any potential violations of the law.' The name of the driver of the car involved in the incident has not been released. Douidi said it was with 'great sadness' that he confirmed the incident that led to the death of the local teenager, the third teen killed in a Bedford motor vehicle incident over a 49-day stretch. Lauren Souza, a 16-year-old Trinity High School junior from Bedford, was killed in a crash early Easter morning on April 20. On May 28, a Manchester 13-year-old died in a crash at the Kilton Road exit off Route 101. 'The Bedford Police Department is working closely with the School District and community leaders to support students and staff during this difficult time,' Douidi said. Bedford High Principal Bob Jozokos sent a letter to parents first thing Monday informing them that a student had died and that resources were available for students at the school. The investigation is ongoing. Police have not said if any arrests have been made or are imminent. 'Our hearts are with the family, friends, and entire school community mourning this tragic loss. We urge everyone, especially parents, to understand the life-threatening risks associated with underage drinking and gatherings that are not properly supervised. No parent should have to face the loss of a child under these circumstances,' Douidi said. Anyone who may have seen anything on Wallace Road leading up to the incident can call the Bedford Police Department at 603-472-5113. dpierce@

Traveler arrested with 112 pounds of ketamine at Las Vegas airport

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Federal officials arrested an international traveler at Harry Reid International Airport with more than 100 pounds of ketamine in her luggage, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned. On June 5, special agents with Homeland Security Investigations arrested Rubeen Grimes on two federal drug charges, records said. Grimes arrived in Las Vegas on a flight from Germany, records said. While going through customs, Grimes appeared 'visibly nervous,' and agents later searched two of her suitcases. Agents X-rayed the suitcases, locating a large bag in each. A 'white, crystal substance' in the two bags, weighing a combined 112 pounds, later tested positive for ketamine, officials said. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration classifies ketamine as an anesthetic street drug that causes 'some hallucinogenic effects.' Grimes later told agents a person in Belgium 'recruited' her to bring the suitcases from Germany to Las Vegas, documents said. The deal would net her 10,000 in British pounds, or about $13,500. Grimes also told police she believed she was transporting marijuana. It was not clear if Grimes was in custody as of Wednesday. Federal officials filed a warrant for her arrest on Monday. Doctors can use an injectable form of ketamine to treat depression, the DEA said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
