Atlético Madrid eliminated from Club World Cup as PSG and Botafogo advance from Group B
It took nearly the entire second half, but relentless attacks on goal paid off for Antoine Griezmann in the 87th minute on Monday.
After teammate Ángel Correa's shot was blocked by a defender, Griezmann sent a left-footed shot into the net to lift Atlético Madrid to a 1-0 victory over Botafogo in Group B action of the Club World Cup in Pasadena, California.
Unfortunately, it was not enough to send the Spaniards on to the knockout rounds as Atlético Madrid needed a victory of at least three goals to advance. Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-0 on Monday, and Botafogo – who beat PSG earlier this week – claimed the group's top two spots.
In the 10th minute, Botafogo had a prime opportunity to strike first after a through ball to Jefferson Savarino gave the striker a run at goal. Atlético Madrid's Jan Oblak, however, stretched out to keep the match scoreless.
Julián Alvarez nearly gave Atlético Madrid the lead just before the half. The forward collected an entry pass just outside the goal area, turned and whipped a right-footed blast, but his attempt was pulled wide to the left to keep the match in a scoreless draw.
Early in the second half, Atlético again put the pressure on Botafogo with Griezmann settling a lofted ball down the left side and beating his defender along the goal line. Griezmann then attempted to sneak in a left-footed shot by the near post, but it caromed off the post and out of play.
In the 67th minute, Botafogo went on the offensive as Cuiabano lofted a cross into the box that Igor Jesus one-timed on goal. Again, Oblak was there to punch the attempt away to maintain a clean sheet.
Atletico had several chances to build upon its lead following the 87th-minute score from Griezmann, but Botafogo continued to deny the Spaniards.
Oblak finished with three saves for Atlético Madrid, who outshot Botafogo 23-7 (5-3 on goal). Botafogo's John was credited with four saves.
In Group B's other game, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in the first half, Achraf Hakimi struck in the second and Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders.
Gianluigi Donnarumma kept his second clean sheet of the tournament in front of the Sounders home supporters without having to make a save as PSG (2-1-0, 6 points) closed out their Group B campaign and rebounded from a 1-0 defeat to Botafogo on Thursday.
They'll face the second-place finisher from Group A in a second-round match on Sunday in Atlanta, Georgia.
Seattle (0-3-0, 0 points) became the second MLS team to be eliminated following LAFC's exit after their 1-0 loss to ES Tunis in Group D on Thursday. Inter Miami, which is guaranteed to advance with a draw against Palmeiras later Thursday in Group A, could end up as PSG's next opponent.

Hakimi's goal came on a swift counter moments after one of the Sounders' best chances. Eventually, Bradley Barcola slalomed into the penalty area from the left, then picked out Hakimi on the opposite side of the box.
Hakimi had time to take a composing touch before firing in an emphatic finish from about 10 yards out.
As expected, PSG had the majority of the early chances. Désiré Doué's effort forced Stefan Frei into a sprawling aerial save in the 12th minute.
But the Sounders had some success pressing high and nearly took a shock lead in the 19th minute after turning PSG over at the edge of its own box - only for Jesús Ferreira to fire his hurried effort well high of the target.
The Parisians were fortunate with their 35th minute breakthrough. Vitinha's initial strike from the edge of the penalty area through traffic appeared to be heading wide of the right post. Instead it struck Kvaratskhelia's back, redirecting it neatly inside the upright before Frei could react.
Twice PSG nearly doubled its lead early in the second. After a promising attack down the left, Doué's 56th-minute attempt from about 10 yards was blocked by Nouhou's critical sprawling intervention. Four minutes later, João Neves volleyed Hakimi's outswinging service from the right just wide of the left post.

D-backs 3B Eugenio Suarez exits after HBP on hand

The 33-year-old Suarez is hitting .251 with 25 home runs and 67 RBIs in 78 games this season. In 12 seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2014), Cincinnati Reds (2015-21), Seattle Mariners (2022-23) and Diamondbacks, Suarez has hit .249 with 301 homers and 898 RBIs in 1,548 games. Report: Mavs C Daniel Gafford to sign 3-year, $60M extension
June 24 - Center Daniel Gafford, a key piece of the formidable frontcourt for the Dallas Mavericks, will sign a three-year contract extension worth close to $60 million, ESPN reported on Monday. Other media outlets reported that Gafford's deal will be worth $54 million. In 2025-26, the 26-year-old Gafford is set to earn $14.4 million -- per Spotrac -- in the final year of a three-year, $40.2 million contract extension he signed in 2021 with the Washington Wizards. According to ESPN, Gafford's agents -- Mike George and Shy Saee of Klutch Sports -- worked with Dallas officials on the new deal, which runs through the 2028-29 season. Gafford, who joined the Mavericks in a trade with the Wizards in February 2024 and helped Dallas reach the NBA Finals that spring, will again team up with Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II in the frontcourt. That trio is expected to be joined by Duke star Cooper Flagg with Dallas holding the No. 1 pick in Wednesday's NBA Draft. In six seasons with the Bulls (2019-21), Wizards (2021-24) and Mavericks, Gafford has averaged 9.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game over 378 games (215 starts). --Field Level Media

Trevor Rogers, Jackson Holliday help O's stymie Rangers
June 24 - Jackson Holliday smacked a three-run home run and a run-scoring double and Trevor Rogers pitched eight shutout innings as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting Texas Rangers 6-0 to open a three-game series Monday night. Rogers (1-0), in his third big-league outing of the season, held the Rangers to three singles across eight frames (101 pitches). He struck out four without a walk. This marked his first victory with the Baltimore organization. He last won in July 2024 with the Miami Marlins before a trade to the Orioles. Andrew Kittredge worked a perfect ninth inning, needing only five pitches to complete the game. Holliday racked up three hits and Ramon Laureano had a double among his two hits for Baltimore, which had eight players with at least one hit. All four of Holliday's RBIs came with two outs. The Rangers didn't threaten, stranding three runners and only having one plate appearance with a runner in scoring position. Texas lost for only the third time in its last nine road games. Rangers starter Patrick Corbin (4-7) allowed five runs and nine hits in five-plus innings. He struck out six without issuing a walk. The Orioles, who snapped a two-game losing streak as they were coming off a 3-4 road trip, opened the scoring on Holliday's third-inning double. That drove in Chadwick Tromp, who reached base on a two-out double. Tromp was in his first game after getting called up from Triple-A Norfolk as catching injuries altered Baltimore's roster during the weekend. Holliday's ninth home run of the season came in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 4-0. Holliday has two three-hit outings in a four-game span. The margin grew in the sixth with Coby Mayo's groundout, and the score reached 6-0 in the seventh on Ramon Urias' sacrifice fly. --Field Level Media
