Vonn and Shiffrin glad to race Olympics on familiar terrain
Lindsey Vonn says the prospect of racing for gold at Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy was her main motivation for coming out of retirement. (Patrick T. Fallon)
Record-breaking downhill skier Lindsey Vonn said the choice of Cortina d'Ampezzo for the women's races at the 2025 Milan Winter Olympic was her main motivation for coming out of retirement.
The former Olympic and world champion stunned the sports world when she returned to the US ski team last year aged 40, five years after retirement.

Vonn's retirement followed a serious knee injury but after she underwent a titanium reconstruction of her knee, she opted to return.
And she told AFP that the prospect of competing for gold at the course in the Italian Dolomites was her primary motivator.
"It was probably the biggest reason why I came back -- because it was in Cortina. I don't know if I would have come back if the Olympics hadn't been in Cortina," she said.
"It's always been historically a great place for me. It's where I got my first podium, where I broke the Women's World Cup win record, and I think it would be a really fitting place to end my career again. It's definitely been the carrot that's been dangling in front of me," she said.

Vonn picked up the first podium of her return at Sun Valley in March, finishing second behind Switzerland's Lara Gut-Behrami in a World Cup Super-G race.
It was a sweet reward for her efforts after she had faced some criticism for taking the risks on the snow after such a long absence.
"The comeback season was incredible. A lot of amazing experiences. Sun Valley was definitely the best way to end it," said Vonn, who was speaking at an NBC event previewing the Winter Games.
"It gives me a lot of confidence going into next season. But it was definitely up and down, some low points, and some really amazing experiences.

"So I think I learned a lot. I know what I have to do next year. I think, hopefully, people understand now my capabilities, and I think the conversation will be hopefully a little different next year than it was this year," she added.
Vonn won her Olympic gold medal in downhill in Vancouver in 2010, a year after clinching World Championship gold at Val d'Isere.
- Beautiful place -
Her team-mate Mikaela Shiffrin, who endured a nightmare Olympics in Beijing in 2022, said she was also glad that a well known European venue had been chosen for the next Games.
"It's a beautiful place and it's a place that we're more familiar with on the Alpine side. And that feels really good to go to a place where we have some knowledge," she told AFP.

"We can talk about the Olympic planning and we can imagine what it's maybe going to look like because we've been there, we've seen it. And so that's going to be, I think, a really nice thing to go to a place that feels, for me in a way, it feels like home. Because I spent so much of my life in Europe now that it's like, OK, here we are. We know," she said.
Shiffrin, who has the most World Cup wins of any skier in history, won gold in slalom in Sochi in 2014 as an 18-year-old and then triumphed in giant slalom in Pyeongchang four years later.
But in Beijing she failed to finish in either of her favoured events and left without a medal.
"I think what I realized from the Olympics is there's always something new around the corner. And when I thought I experienced everything after South Korea, then Beijing came and changed everything I knew about the Olympics," she said.

"It just gave me experience of how hard and upsetting this kind of event can be when everything does go kind of wrong," she said.
"I think that the best approach is like, do the best we can, and I'll be prepared and I'll practice and be ready to go. And then what happens, happens, but life goes on," she said.

Italy Star Insists Inter Milan ‘Not On Vacation' At Club World Cup Following Dramatic 2-1 Win Vs Urawa Red Diamonds
Italy Star Insists Inter Milan 'Not On Vacation' At Club World Cup Following Dramatic 2-1 Win Vs Urawa Red Diamonds Alessandro Bastoni says that Inter Milan are 'not on vacation' at the Club World Cup following their 2-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds. The 26-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the match. Advertisement Inter Milan had to do it the hard way against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Nerazzurri had nearly all of the possession of the ball. However, they conceded early on, with Ryoma Watanabe scoring after they were caught out completely on the break within the first fifteen minutes. From then on, the pattern was clear. Urawa Reds dug in and defended their penalty area, whilst Inter tried to break them down. That proved to be a very difficult task. The Japanese team defended with composure, physicality, and organization. They didn't allow Inter any time or space to create telling chances. In the end, it was Inter captain Lautaro Martinez who finally found the back of the net. And it was with Inter's first shot on target of the match. Advertisement The Argentine scored with an acrobatic overhead kick from a corner. And then, it proved to be substitute Valentin Carboni who was decisive. The 20-year-old scored in stoppage time to break Urawa hearts and give Inter a vital first win at the Club World Cup. (Photo by) After the match, Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni commented that 'we've gotten a big weight off our shoulders.' 'We'd gone a while without a win,' continued the Italian international. 'And we wanted to have the feeling of three points again.' 'We were playing the way we had against Monterrey. Then we conceded a goal.' Advertisement 'I'm very proud of this team's spirit,' added the Italian international. 'We'll be freer mentally. We've always been focused in this competition.' Then, Bastoni admitted that it is 'inevitable' for Inter to feel a bit of fatigue. 'It's been an exhausting season,' the Italian international commented. 'But we didn't come here to be on vacation. We want to take the Inter brand forward, and we want to do well in this competition.' Bastoni then observed that 'the coach has only been here for a short amount of time.' 'He'll have to work at the start of next season. Now, obviously there's no time for him to introduce new ideas.' Advertisement 'He came into the dressing room with a bang,' Bastoni said of new Inter coach Cristian Chivu. 'He's working a lot on our mentality.' Bastoni added that Chivu is 'a super person.' 'We're happy about that,' added the 26-year-old.

Victor Osimhen waiting for €75m release clause to expire to drop his price
Key Manchester United target Victor Osimhen is playing a waiting game until his €75m release clause expires and he could be available more cheaply, according to reports in Italy. The clause in the Nigerian's contract only applies to clubs outside of Italy and expires in mid-July, frustrating any hopes of wrapping up a quick deal but making a more affordable one more likely. Advertisement Although on the other hand the risk is that with no clause to be triggered Napoli could dig their heels in and ask for more or, with the player having several known suitors, a bidding war could ensue. Gazzetta dello Sport claim that the player is not taking this pessimistic view and is actively waiting because 'he hopes that once the clause expires the price will drop'. However, Napoli have the option to extend his contract – currently due to expire in 2026 – by a further 12 months which would likely ratchet the price right back up again. There seems to be no discussion of the 26-year-old staying on in Naples, so any contractual wrangling would be purely with a view to the club getting as much money as possible for the player while keeping him away from their direct rivals. Advertisement Fellow Serie A giants Juventus are very keen, but Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is determined not to strengthen a potential title contender, and 'hopes to find a foreign club that will settle the bill and satisfy the Nigerian'. The report suggests that Osimhen's decision to wait is encouraging to Juventus, but notes that if another club comes along in the meantime, or if the Turin side fail to sell Dusan Vlahovic, his future could like beyond Serie A. Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray where he was as prolific as ever, scoring 37 goals in 41 games and supplying eight assists. He would be an ideal striker to drop into Ruben Amorim's goal-starved squad, with the experience and mentality to hit the ground running and drag the Red Devils up by their bootstraps. Advertisement Even amongst Premier League clubs United do not have a clear run at the player, however, with Liverpool reportedly entering talks for him and Chelsea long holding an interest. Osimhen declined a gigantic offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal earlier this summer which boosted hopes for prospective employers across Europe. Ultimately, however, it feels like a long-running saga with the end not yet in sight for either the player or United. Featured image Ahmad Mora via Getty Images Follow us on Bluesky: @
