Seven Naxalites surrender in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district
DANTEWADA: Seven Naxalites, two of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Friday, a police official said.
The cadres turned themselves in before police and CRPF officials citing disappointment at the growing differences within the outlawed CPI (Maoist), the harsh forest life and the movement's hollow ideology, he said.
The surrendered cadres also said they were impressed by the police's rehabilitation drive 'Lon Varratu' in the district and the state government's new surrender and rehabilitation policy, the official added.
The official identified the surrendered cadres as Juglu alias Sundum Kowasi (23), Dasha alias Burku Podiam (26), Bhoja Ram Madvi (48), Lakhma alias Suti (26), Ratu alias Othe Kowasi (25), Sukhram Podiyam (25) and Pandru Ram Podiyam (45).
"Juglu and Dasha carried a bounty of Rs 50,000 each. The surrendered Naxalites were involved in incidents like damaging roads, cutting trees, putting up Naxalite banners, posters and pamphlets during 'bandh' called by Maoists. They were provided assistance of Rs 50,000 each post surrender and will be further rehabilitated as per the government's policy," the official said.
With this, a total of 991 Naxalites, including 238 carrying rewards, have so far quit violence in the district under the 'Lon Varratu' (term coined in local Gondi dialect which means return to your home/village) campaign launched in June 2020, as per police.
In 2024, a total of 792 Naxalites had surrendered in Bastar region, comprising seven districts, including Dantewada, police said.

SURAT: The investigation into a massive international cybercrime racket busted last month in Surat has revealed a staggering Rs 1,455 crore was laundered through 90 bank accounts that were opened by misusing documents of needy people over the last six months. The total amount siphoned off could rise to Rs 2,000 crore, as the police are yet to examine details of another 75 suspicious accounts. The racket was unearthed on May 22, when Udhna police detained a man carrying suspicious stamps and bank kits. The probe led to a raid at an office in Mota Varachha operated by Kirat Jadwani, Meet Khokhar, and Mayur Italiya, all of whom were subsequently arrested. Police recovered a trove of incriminating documents, cash, stamps, and banking kits. According to investigators, an international cybercrime syndicate — with operatives based in Cuba, Malaysia, and Thailand — used these accounts to park defrauded money linked to various online scams. The accounts were opened in private banks such as RBL, Axis, Yes Bank, and Kotak Mahindra, primarily through their branches in Vesu, Sahara Darwaja, and Varachha. Another major revelation during the probe was that 2,500 cybercrime complaints across India were linked to 165 bank accounts connected with the accused. Of these, 265 complaints were from Gujarat, including 36 from Surat cyberfraud victims alone. Deputy commissioner of police (zone-2) Bhagirath Gadhvi confirmed that Rs 1,455 crore worth of transactions were recorded in the 90 RBL bank accounts scrutinized over the past six months. "Some accounts had transactions ranging between ₹10 crore and ₹50 crore. Complaints on the national cybercrime portal confirmed these accounts were used to route funds from digital arrest scams, online betting, and other cyber frauds," Gadhvi told TOI. Udhna police inspector SN Desai added, "We found 2,500 cybercrime complaints linked to these accounts nationwide. The scale and spread of this fraud are unprecedented." Jadwani, one of the key accused, had reportedly suffered heavy losses in the warehouse business after which he turned to cybercrime in July 2024. He would identify individuals in financial distress and pay them up to Rs 8 lakh in exchange for their identity documents, which were then used to open current accounts. Some of these accounts were also opened in the names of non-existent companies. Jadwani allegedly earned around Rs 10 crore in commissions for renting out these accounts to cybercriminals. Desai added: "We found Rs 1.40 crores from Jadwani's accounts, which were frozen. In 90 bank accounts we checked, we found that Rs 1.10 crores was seized by different agencies and banks." A cold case, a TMC leader's film debut, and a burning question: What happened to Manisha Mukhopadhyay?
It is one of the most famous cold cases in West Bengal. One fine day in early September 1997, senior Calcutta University (CU) official Manisha Mukhopadhyay disappeared without a trace, leaving behind an elderly mother who believed her daughter's disappearance was linked to her proximity to Left Front bigwigs at the time and never gave up looking for her. Now, over a quarter of a century later, the story of Mukherjee's disappearance is set to come to the big screen in director Arindam Sil's next film Karpoor (Camphor) starring Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Kunal Ghosh and Bratya Basu, a state minister. While people involved in the film said Ghosh's character was loosely based on then CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas, one of the most powerful leaders at the time, Ghosh told The Indian Express, 'It is based on a political thriller. I am acting as the state secretary of a political party. But that doesn't mean that I am playing Anil Biswas. This is my debut film, and I asked Arindam to tutor me in the art of acting.' Mukhopadhyay was the assistant controller of examinations at Calcutta University, and this resulted in her proximity to frontline CPI(M) leaders at the time. According to her mother Chinu, who later moved court alleging that her daughter had been murdered, the CU official knew many secrets, and this was the reason for her disappearance. According to reports at the time, on the day of her disappearance, Mukhopadhyay was on her way from the city's Bhowanipore area to visit her parents in south Kolkata and got into a cab with her husband and nephew. After her husband alighted from the cab on the way, the CU official and her nephew continued on their way, but a few yards down the road, Mukhopadhyay told her nephew to get down from the taxi. He initially refused but eventually got down near the city's Golpark area, and the taxi sped away. That was the last time anyone saw Mukhopadhyay. The police struggled to make much headway, and the investigation subsequently stalled. Two years later, after Chinu Mukhopadhyay found some photographs among her daughter's belongings, the police again reopened the case. This time, the police received several reports of Mukhopadhyay being sighted, from an ashram in Purulia to Bodh Gaya to Assam. But no solid lead materialised, leaving the probe faltering again. Before entering politics, Ghosh was a political reporter and editor and, according to people in the TMC, used to be close to Anil Biswas. 'Kunal da was very close to many CPI(M) leaders, including Anil Biswas, and he saw Biswas closely. So, he is an ideal choice for the role,' said a senior TMC leader. Bratya Basu, the state education minister, will play a detective who investigates the case.

Pawan extends financial help of `50L to Madhusudan's family
Kavali (Nellore district): Minister Kandula Durgesh announced that following instructions from Jana Sena Chief Pawan Kalyan, he personally provided Rs 50 lakh in financial aid to the family of Madhusudan Rao, a software engineer from Kavali, who tragically died in the Pahalgam terror attack during a tour to Jammu and Kashmir in April. The Minister accompanied by TIDCO chairman Vemulapati Ajay, visited Madhusudan's family here on Friday. They offered condolences and reassured the family of financial security. On the occasion, they prayed for the peace of Madhusudan's soul. They also assured the grieving family that Jana Sena would stand by them. Minister Durgesh revealed that Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan personally announced Rs 22.50 lakh each for Madhusudan's son, who is studying in 8th grade, and his daughter, who is studying Intermediate, and Rs 5 lakh for his parents. He confirmed that these amounts were directly handed over. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Durgesh stated that Deputy Chief Minister and Janasenani Pawan Kalyan was deeply moved upon hearing about the incident. The Minister added that based on their leader Pawan's decision to support Madhusudan's family, they travelled to Kavali to personally console the family and offer encouragement. He assured them that Pawan Kalyan's help and cooperation would always be available to the family. The Minister said the Deputy Chief Minister decided to support Madhusudan's family, who unjustly fell victim to a terrorist attack, and has provided personal financial assistance. Durgesh assured the children that they would always stand by the family so they wouldn't feel the pain of losing their father and the main breadwinner. Minister Durgesh instilled confidence, stating that the party would provide support, whether it's for a small-level activist or a state-level leader, for any assistance required.
