South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen on Monday announced a shock retirement from all formats of international cricket. Klaasen's international retirement came as a huge blow for South Africa ahead of their co-hosting of the 2027 World Cup where he would have been a major draw card in the batting line-up.
Having already called it time in Test cricket in 2024, the 33-year-old's retirement from white-ball cricket came as a shock to many. However, the hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter will maintain his presence felt on the global T20 league circuit.
The last time Klaasen wore a South African jersey was during the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal against New Zealand in Dubai a few months back. The Proteas lost in the last four stage. Klaasen was also a part of the South African team that lost the T20 World Cup 2024 final to India in Barbados.
Based on a SportsTiger.com report, Klaasen's net worth is close to USD 6 million which is close to ₹ 51 crore as of 2024. However, there is no update on his net worth in 2025. A major part of Klaasen's income comes from his IPL salary with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Cricket South Africa contract and various brand endorsements.
As far as his IPL salary is concerned, Klaasen joined IPL through Rajasthan Royals in 2018 for ₹ 50 lakh. The next year, Klaasen was bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for ₹ 50 lakh. The right-hander didn't play in the next three seasons before making a comeback in 2023 through Sunrisers Hyderabad who bought him for ₹ 5.25 Crore.
Following his heroics with the bat, Klaasen was retained for ₹ 23 crore ahead of IPL 2025 meg auction. Besides IPL, Klaasen also plies his trade in England's The Hundred, Caribbean Premier League, Major League Cricket in the USA, Global T20 Canada and SA20.

In less than 24 hours, ecstasy turned into despair. Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, secured on Tuesday night in Ahmedabad, triggered unabated joy and raucous celebrations in Bengaluru and the rest of Karnataka. However, by Wednesday evening, a thick shroud of grief hung over the southern metropolis as a ghastly stampede in and around RCB's home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, left 11 dead and more than 50 injured. The hallowed venue was hosting a felicitation event in honour of the victorious team while fans outside, desperate to get in, ended up as a heaving chaotic mass with many gasping for breath. Asphyxia was the primary cause of death besides injuries suffered in the stifling rush. Sport is often a tight pact between the performing athlete and the adoring fan; it triggers emotions, and in the case of the IPL, forges a connection between the franchise and a vast audience. RCB has always had a loyal fan base, and the IPL triumph was bound to attract followers running into lakhs, towards the Central Business District of M.G. Road, Brigade Road, Cubbon Road, Queens Road and KSCA Clubhouse Link Road. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah admitted that the crowd was beyond expectations. However, to use a massive gathering as an explanation for an avoidable accident, is unacceptable. The multitude of fans near the Vidhana Soudha, the State legislature, from Wednesday morning should have compelled the authorities to tighten crowd control protocols. RCB had proclaimed that there would be an open-bus parade, but the police clarified that it would not happen. With no access to the Vidhana Soudha where the Chief Minister felicitated the players, the frenzied gathering rushed towards the stadium for a glimpse of stars such as Virat Kohli. The rumours about the gates being open to the public, and the contradictory messages about entry by invitation only, exacerbated the crisis. As the venue was packed, gates were closed but fans tried to force their way in. Be it the Karnataka State Cricket Association's (KSCA) security or police personnel, staffing was inadequate and a fatal climax was inevitable. The State Government, the RCB management, the KSCA and the BCCI have expressed their condolences while some have indulged in finger-pointing. The Chief Minister has announced that the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and all officials responsible for the jurisdiction where the stadium is have been suspended, pending an inquiry. There will also be a judicial inquiry. However, the grim truth is that the fan, who drives the commerce of every sport, is the last priority for administrators. Clear communication, effective policing and proper advance notice for an event of this scale are all essential or else, such tragedies might recur periodically.

Riju Ravindran, co-founder and former promoter of Think and Learn, which owns debt-ridden edtech firm Byju's, has moved insolvency tribunal NCLT for removal of GLAS Trust as the financial creditor and from its Committee of Creditors. In his petition, Ravindran has alleged that GLAS Trust has "fraudulently represented itself to be a financial creditor" and has requested the National Company Law Tribunal to direct it to "prove its authority to represent the creditors before it". The agreement was for a period of five years with a maturity dated in November 2026 for the term loan under the GLAS issued a notice of default and sought to accelerate the term loan on March 2023 within 15 months of the Credit Agreement and 3.5 years prior to the maturity realising that certain lenders had stepped into the shoes of the initial investors in violation of the specific terms of the Credit Agreement, Think and Learn exercised its rights under the agreement to protect itself by issuing letter of disqualification on June 5, 2023, to Redwood to the petition, GLAS claims to be the administrative and collateral agent for the lenders under the Credit Trust, which had also filed insolvency plea, claimed that 72.2 per cent of the lenders consented to filing of the same."It is submitted that out of these 72.20 per cent, 61.43 per cent are disqualified lenders. Therefore, from the lenders who consented (or voted "yes"), only about 10.77 per cent are not disqualified lenders. The percentage of disqualified lenders who consented in proportion to non-disqualified lenders is 6.61 per cent. This would, perforce, mean that GLAS has the authority to represent only 17.38 per cent of the term loan," he said.
