University student pleads guilty to physical sexual assault against cousin
KLANG: A local university student pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here today to three charges of physical sexual assault against a girl who is his cousin in 2023 and 2025.
Based on two charges, the 19-year-old man committed physical sexual assault against an eight-year-old girl on March 2 and 3 this year at a house in Sungai Buloh, Selangor.
For the third charge, he was also accused of committing the offence of physical sexual assault against the victim at the same house on Sept 10, 2023.
All the offences were charged under Section 14(a) and 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, and if convicted, the accused can be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 20 years and can be whipped.
Previously, deputy public prosecutor Nur 'Ayuni Jamri requested a new date for the preparation of a social report from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM) considering that the accused is a young offender, in addition to being used as case facts and for sentencing.
Nur 'Ayuni did not propose any bail due to the accused having a familial relationship with the victim, but suggested RM15,000 if the court allows it, with the additional condition of not disturbing any witnesses.
The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, in his mitigation, requested that the bail amount be reduced because he regretted his actions, was unemployed, and was still being supported by his father.
'This is my first mistake. I realise that I made a mistake. Previously, when I was detained for less than a month, I took that time to reflect on what I had done and repented.
'I am the eldest child and have the responsibility as an older brother to set a good example for my younger siblings. I request a reduction in the bail,' he said.
However, Judge Siti Aminah Ghazali set the bail amount at RM8,000 and Aug 20 as the sentencing date.
In a separate case in the same court, a 37-year-old lorry driver was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 20 strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to raping his daughter last year and on May 17.
The court also ordered the defendant to undergo counselling and police supervision for two years after completing the sentence.
According to two charges, the lorry driver was accused of raping his biological child on Nov 10, 2024, and May 17, 2025, when the victim was 10 and 11 years old respectively, in a house in Meru, Klang.
The man was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of not more than 30 years and not less than 10 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction.
The case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Jannah Aimi while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

Cigarette smuggling syndicate busted using abandoned building as storage facility
SEPANG: The Customs Department has uncovered a smuggling syndicate that used a dilapidated and seemingly abandoned building as a storage facility for contraband cigarettes. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said the syndicate's modus operandi was uncovered following a raid on May 22 at a dilapidated building near a residential area in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. He said the abandoned building had been used as a storage facility for smuggled white cigarettes in an attempt to evade detection by authorities, with the structure, in its run-down condition, appeared unsuspicious and would typically go unnoticed. "Following the raid, nearly 1.9 million sticks of cigarettes of various brands and 377kg of tobacco, with the total market value, including duties and taxes, estimated at over RM1.56 million were seized," he said in a press conference today. He said efforts were underway to trace the owner of the premises to assist in the investigation, which is being conducted under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. Meanwhile, Zulkifli also revealed that Customs had successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 62,000 litres of nicotine-laced electronic cigarette liquid during an operation at the premises of an air cargo terminal operator in the KLIA Free Trade Zone on April 28. He said the syndicate had attempted to deceive authorities by falsely declaring the product as disposable electronic cigarettes, which do not require an import licence from the Health Ministry. "Nicotine is classified as a prohibited item under Item 4, Schedule II, Part I of the Customs (Prohibition on Imports) Order 2023, and its importation is only allowed with a valid licence from the MOH. "The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM334,000, with duties and taxes amounting to RM60,680," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Regulation 30 (1) of the Free Zone Regulations 1991. – Bernama

Christina Liew KOTA KINABALU (June 19): There have been no takers of the RM10,000 reward offered for information leading to the capture of those responsible for beheading several elephants in Kalabakan, said Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew. 'So far, no one has come forward. We have our suspicions, but without solid evidence, we can't charge them in court. We want to charge them, actually. So anything we can do — just to investigate, maybe? We are reaching out to the local community, the kampung people around the area where the elephant was killed,' said Liew. She added that they are contacting villagers in the area, including the village head and the district police. 'Hopefully, we can work together. We've asked them to call our rescue line at any time so that we can follow the tracks and catch them. But I suspect the kampung people know something — they're just hesitant to come forward,' she alleged. Liew also said she does not believe the perpetrators are part of a syndicate. 'I don't believe it is. What do they gain? What do they get from killing these elephants? It's not for the organs or anything. There's nothing they got. They just chopped the head off. Very cruel.' When asked if the government would consider increasing the reward, she replied: 'We can negotiate.' On whether there have been any recent cases of headless elephants, she said, 'No, no. We hope this will stop. I get seriously angry every time I see something like this happen. It's no good, no good. I'm an animal lover myself — I do not like to see these things.' She said she has spoken to Wildlife Department director Soffian Abu Bakar, who informed her that despite the department's best efforts, they have not been able to identify the culprits. 'Hopefully, these kinds of incidents will not happen again. I've already instructed the Wildlife Department director that we cannot allow this to go unpunished. On April 9, Soffian reported that six elephants had been found decapitated in Sabah since July 2024, suspected to be driven by market demand. 'Just in 2024 alone, 32 elephants have been recorded dead due to various causes such as illness, poisoning, suspected murder and shooting, and four of them were beheaded,' he said. 'As of today, two more elephants have been killed the same way — beheaded. That brings the total to six. All these incidents occurred along Kalabakan Road. The most likely reason for these killings, we assume, is ivory,' he added.

Police arrest couple for allegedly abusing 11-year-old daughter
ARAU: A couple was arrested early this morning at their home in Taman Desa Saujana here for allegedly abusing their 11-year-old daughter since 2023. Arau police chief Supt Ahmad Mohsin Md Rodi said the 37-year-old husband and wife were detained at 1.30am after the Perlis Social Welfare Department (JKM) received a public complaint about suspected physical abuse. According to initial investigations, the most recent incident is believed to have occurred at about noon yesterday when the girl was allegedly caned on her back by her father for misbehaving. 'JKM received the tip-off via its hotline around 12.15pm yesterday. It was reported that the child had been physically abused by her biological parents,' he said in a statement today. Later that night, a JKM child protection officer visited the house at 10.40pm and took the girl, a pupil at a Chinese vernacular school (SJKC) in Kangar, to the Arau Children's Home to facilitate further investigation. A medical examination at Tuanku Fauziah Hospital (HTF) in Kangar revealed injuries on the victim's head, lips, chest, right ribs, back, arms, and legs – believed to be caused by blunt force and exposure to hot water. 'The girl had both old and recent injuries and has been referred to the hospital's Paediatric Unit for further treatment,' he added. The couple has been remanded for six days beginning today to assist with the investigation under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
