Real Madrid legend launches bizarre attack on Lamine Yamal while on international duty - after Spain suffered Nations League final defeat by Portugal

Daily Mail2 days ago

Real Madrid legend Guti has taken aim at Lamine Yamal over his fashion choices during Spanish team press conferences.
Yamal has shot to stardom over the last 12 months and has quickly become one of football's most entertaining stars after impressing for Barcelona in 2024-25.
Hiss rapid rise in the professional game has even seen Yamal become a regular in the Spanish first-team squad - having played a starring role in their Euro 2024 success.
However, in the aftermath of their UEFA Nations League final defeat against Portugal, the teenage winger has come under fire for his 'Ibiza' fashion sense.
Former Madrid star Guti - who made 542 appearances for Los Blancos - told El Chiringuito: 'I don't know if this is the first time I've seen a guy with a cap backwards. I don't like that because he's with the Spanish national team!
'When he goes to Ibiza, or wherever he wants, he can do it. But not with the Spanish national team at a press conference. I don't like it.'
On Thursday last week, following their clash against France in the semi-finals of the Nations League, Yamal arrived at the press conference with his cap backwards.
It marks the second time that the Barcelona youngster has been critiqued for his appearance - after Rafael van der Vaart took aim at him for wearing his pants 'a little lower'.
Back in March, the Dutch pundit and former Tottenham star blasted Yamal as 'superficial,' 'not making much effort,' wearing his pants 'a little lower,' and claimed that he struggled against left-back Jorrel Hato in Spain's clash with Netherlands.
But Yamal hit back on social media, as he wrote on Instagram: 'Pants down, one goal, missed penalty, and in the semifinals. Hehehehehe, let's go Spain!'
After scoring on the night, Yamal also celebrated - alongside Nico Williams - by pulling his shorts down. A clear reference to Van der Vaart's criticisms.
Though Yamal and his Spanish team-mates fell to a penalty shootout defeat against Portugal in the final, the 17-year-old has still enjoyed an immense 2024-25 campaign.
Having fully established himself as a first-team star at Barcelona, Yamal went on to record 18 goals and 21 assists from 55 appearances during the season.
His prolificacy in front of goal helped Hansi Flick's side ensure the LaLiga title and saw them narrowly miss out on a Champions League final spot - after defeat by Inter Milan.
Yamal was similarly criticised for his fashion sense by former Dutch player Rafael van der Vaart - before the Spanish youngster then poked fun at the retired star after posting this picture
Meanwhile, Yamal's national team-mate Alvaro Morata has said he has a big decision to make on his international future and suggested it's 'possible' that he retires.
On Sunday night, the Spanish captain was on the bench during the UEFA Nations League final defeat to Portugal.
He came on during extra-time as a penalty shoot-out loomed, only to miss a decisive spot-kick during Spain's loss.
'I feel bad for my teammates, but it's part of life,' said Morata to to Spanish outlet AS. 'The penalty? I didn't take it well, I could have done better, but there's nothing I can do now. Retirement from the national team? It's possible, I won't be back in September.'

Andy Robertson reveals talks over future but welcomes competition at Liverpool

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has held talks about his future but insists he welcomes the competition which looks set to arrive this summer in the shape of Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. The 31-year-old Scotland captain is entering the final year of his contract and last season was something of a mixed bag in terms of his form. Advertisement Having seen long-time team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold run down his deal in order to join Real Madrid, Robertson may face reduced playing time should the club's chase for the £45million-rated Cherries full-back be successful, as expected. Andy Robertson is entering the final year of his contract (John Walton/PA) But the Scot remains positive about his future and the challenge ahead. 'We have discussed it, of course we have. We've had good discussions with me and the club but what the future holds I am not sure,' Robertson told Sky Sports News about his contract. 'I need a rest after a long season and then I look forward to pre-season, that's all my focus is, I can't look too far ahead. I never have done that so I am not going to start doing that now. Advertisement 'I know the position I am in and I have only got a year left and a lot is getting spoken about and getting said but my full focus is on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids. 'Then I will try to come back in the best possible shape for pre-season and then we'll see what the future holds when these decisions come.' On the potential arrival of Kerkez, a 21-year-old Hungary international, he added: 'The club have identified certain positions where they want to get new blood in, it looks like players we're linked to are all younger players and they are all exciting players as well. 'When you play for a big club like Liverpool you expect challenges, you expect competition and I have always faced that, everyone here has faced that in their own positions and I expect nothing less. Advertisement 'I want the club to be ambitious, they are doing that and wherever we fit into that, if we're happy with our role, we stay and we do it and if not then I am sure there will be a few out the door as well but that's the nature of football.'

Matheus Cunha completes move to Manchester United on a five-year deal

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves on a five-year deal with the option of a further year. United effectively completed the deal on June 1 after activating a £62.5million release clause in the 26-year old's contract. Vamos, Matheus ❤️‍🔥 #MUFC — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 12, 2025 Cunha said: 'It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. 'Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. 'I can't wait for the start of pre-season to get to know my teammates and prepare for the season ahead. Cunha became Ruben Amorim's first summer signing on June 1 as the head coach sets about overhauling his squad after a miserable domestic campaign and a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The striker helped his country qualify for the World Cup finals on Tuesday when he set up the only goal for Vinicius Jr. in a 1-0 win over Paraguay. United's director of football Jason Wilcox added: 'Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window. Real Madrid was the only team I'd leave Liverpool for – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Trent Alexander-Arnold admitted Real Madrid was the only team he would have left boyhood club Liverpool for and was comfortable he made the right decision. The 26-year-old, who has signed a six-year deal after Real paid £8.5million to release him from a contract expiring this month, rejected suggestions he had been heavily influenced by close friend and England team-mate Jude Bellingham. Advertisement He also denied he had been orchestrating the move for a long time but impressing president Florentino Perez and assembled club dignitaries by surprisingly addressing them in Spanish did nothing to calm the anger a significant section of the fanbase have felt about the way he handled his exit after 20 years at Liverpool. 👕 #WelcomeTrent 👕 — Real Madrid C.F. (@realmadrid) June 12, 2025 'To be honest, it was never a question of where, it was whether to go or not to go but I always knew, I've probably known it for a long time, if I was ever to leave Liverpool, it would only be to go Real Madrid, that would be the only club for me,' said Alexander-Arnold, who told a press conference he had been learning Spanish 'for a few months'. 'Then it gets to a point where you have to make a decision whether to go or stay and making that decision was not an easy decision because I'd been there so long, but eventually you have to make a decision and in my mind, I've made the right one.' On Bellingham's supposed influence, he added: 'It wasn't exactly what people think it was but we spoke a lot about Liverpool and Real Madrid, that's the conversations you have as players and friends. Advertisement 'A lot of people think he played a huge part in me coming here but the club speaks for itself. It was a huge opportunity for me – it felt like it was the right time.' Alexander-Arnold had to quickly correct himself after initially saying he had been 'waiting a long time' for this day, explaining: 'By waiting a long time, I mean by a couple of weeks, not years. 'If I'm honest it's not something you dream of as it's out of reach and out of reality for a lot of players, there are only a handful of players who have been able to represent this club,' he said. 'When I was younger I wasn't exactly thinking I would be here today, I was just thinking about learning about how I could be the best footballer I could be. Advertisement 'It's a dream to be here but there is still a lot of hard work to do. I'm excited to get started right away.' Alexander-Arnold, wearing a black suit and tie, sat next to girlfriend Estelle Behnke as a video montage was played of his best moments at Liverpool, inevitably featuring his two assists in the 4-0 Champions League semi-final comeback against Real's arch-rivals Barcelona. His mum Dianne sat alongside his dad Michael and brothers Tyler – his agent – and Marcell and could be seen wiping away tears as the video concluded. Real president Florentino Perez described Alexander-Arnold as 'a player who has won everything, one of the best defenders and full-backs in world football. One on the greatest players worldwide is joining this club and hopefully we can write a new page in the history books'. Advertisement That starts in the United States later this month at the Club World Cup, which is the reason Real paid Liverpool to release the right-back from his contract early. Trent Alexander-Arnold signed a six-year deal after Real paid £8.5m to release him from his contract (Borja Hojas/PA) 'I grew up watching this club win three Champions League in row so I'm no stranger to seeing Real Madrid winning trophies,' said the former Liverpool academy graduate, who will wear 'Trent' on the back of his number 12 shirt to avoid the confusion European fans have had with his double-barrelled surname. 'A big part of why I joined was to be a big part of the success going forward. 'I'm joining a young team with a lot of potential with the mindset to win trophies. We go to America for the Club World Cup and our ambition is to win that trophy too. I'm looking for a great start.' Advertisement
