French wildcard Lois Boisson makes history at Roland Garros with semi-final spot

Boisson dropped to the clay with her hands over her eyes in emotional scenes on a packed, ecstatic Court Philippe-Chatrier.
'I'm just proud of myself, because it was really tough for me to go into the semi-final,' she said.
'Every match was really tough, so I'm just proud about how it ends every time. And proud about what I do on the court.'
Boisson's earnings from the year so far were £15,000, and she has now pocketed £580,000 for her fortnight's work in Paris.
Her run has echoes of Emma Raducanu's charge through qualifying to win the US Open in 2021.
If she goes on to win it, it would be even more unbelievable, as Raducanu was at least on the radar having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon before her New York triumph.

And Boisson, who faces second seed Coco Gauff for a place in the final, freely admits she is dreaming of claiming the title.
'I think every kid who plays tennis has the dream to win a slam. More for French player to win Roland Garros, for sure,' she added.
'So, yeah, it's a dream. For sure I will go for the dream, because my dream is to win it, not to be in the semi-final. So I will try to do my best for it.'
It was all too much for Russian 18-year-old Andreeva, who had two set points in the first but suffered a complete meltdown in the second.
She told the crowd to 'shut up', received a code violation for whacking a ball into the stands, burst into tears and shouted at members of her coaching team to leave.
Andreeva said: 'I think that the way I managed to kind of not react to anything in the first set – I think that if I would have been able to do this throughout the whole match, would have been great.'
Boisson had suffered a career-threatening ACL injury before what was supposed to be her debut here last year and spent nine months recovering.
She had won just one Tour-level match before Roland Garros, against Harriet Dart whose unpleasant comment that her opponent needed to wear deodorant must now be eating away at the British player this fortnight.
Boisson is projected to rise to 65 in the WTA rankings, which would place her above Dart.
Gauff had earlier scrapped her way past her fellow American Madison Keys, the seventh seed, 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-1.
The 21-year-old faces arguably an even bigger test on Thursday against an inspired Boisson and 15,000 raucous Parisians on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
'I think there are two ways I have done it in the past,' said Gauff. 'Either, A, just pretend they're cheering for you, or B, just using it and not letting that get to you.
'I think it's just something that I will mentally prepare for if it were to happen and expect and be ready for.'
Boisson had spent the morning hitting with none other than men's top seed Jannik Sinner.
It seemed to do both the world of good, with Italian Sinner dispatching Alexander Bublik in straight sets.
The Kazakh, who knocked out Jack Draper on Monday, was beaten 6-1 7-5 6-0.

Carlos Alcaraz feels he pushed Lorenzo Musetti to the limit in French Open semi

The defending champion secured his place in Sunday's Roland Garros showpiece after Italian eighth seed Musetti, who had won the first set, retired in the fourth while trailing 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-0 2-0. 'It's not the way that I want to win, to make the final,' said Alcaraz. 'I just wished him a speedy recovery. I hope to see him soon, on court again, enjoying his tennis again. 'In the first set I had a few break points that I couldn't make. I tried to stay there. I knew that I had chances. I was playing great. 🧡 — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 6, 2025 'It was just about a few mistakes or few things that made the difference in the first set. 'Then in the second set, it was pretty close as well. I ended up playing a great tie-break. I think his level went down a little bit, and I made the most of it. 'At the beginning of the third set, I knew what I had to do. I'm pushing him to the limit, try to make him run from side to side. 'In the end, you know, he had to retire, but I think it was a really important moment the beginning of the third set.' The 22-year-old Spaniard now has the chance to become the first man to retain the title since his idol, Rafael Nadal, managed it in 2020. Final bound 🔒 Carlos Alcaraz advances after Musetti is forced to retire due to injury 4-6 7-6(3) 6-0 2-0.@rolandgarros | #RolandGarros — ATP Tour (@atptour) June 6, 2025 Musetti played some exquisite tennis in the first two sets under the roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier. But the 23-year-old had treatment on his leg during a one-sided third set and called it a day after Alcaraz won nine games in a row. There were echoes of a match here four years ago when Musetti retired against Novak Djokovic at 4-0 down in the fifth, later saying he was not injured but that he quit because he was 'not able to win a point'. This time he revealed he had a problem with his thigh. 'I felt it at the beginning of the third when I was serving, I started losing a little bit of strength on the left leg, behind,' he said. Get well soon, Lore 🧡#RolandGarros — Roland-Garros (@rolandgarros) June 6, 2025 'Definitely it was going worse and worse, so I decided to stop. I think it was the right decision to make, even if it was not what I wanted.' Musetti is scheduled to play at Queen's Club in just over a week in the build-up to Wimbledon. But he added: 'It's too early to say. Of course in the programme it's next tournament Queen's, and then of course Wimbledon. 'But of course we are going to evaluate tomorrow what the examinations will say, and take a decision for what's next.'

James Norton and Rebecca Adlington take part in 10-hour charity swim

On Friday, the two were among those to take the plunge in a 10-hour endurance ocean swim at Joss Bay in Kent, to raise money for the Blue Marine Foundation, a charity committed to addressing overfishing. Ahead of the event, they shared their earliest memories of the sea and pressed the importance of allowing future generations to 'experience the magic of healthy seas'. Ms Adlington told the PA news agency: 'I've always felt a deep connection to water, so when the opportunity came up to support coastal restoration through this event with Talisker and Blue Marine Foundation, it just felt like a natural fit. 'As a swimming challenge, this one stands out because of its direct impact on protecting and preserving marine life, with £150 from every kilometre swum helping to fund essential conservation work.' The two-time gold medal swimmer added: 'I hope people see this event as more than just a challenge, it's a call to action.' A report published by Blue Marine Foundation in July 2024 noted a 92% UK reduction in seagrass meadows and a 95% decline in native oyster reefs over the last century. Happy Valley actor Norton said: 'Like everyone, I'm in awe of the ocean. It's wild, powerful, and under threat. 'Taking a stand is about protecting biodiversity and ensuring future generations can experience the magic of healthy seas.' He added that his family goes by the mantra 'you'll never regret a swim' but admitted he had never been involved with this level of endurance swimming. New government regulations came into force on Friday which give water industry regulator Ofwat the power to retrospectively prevent bonuses paid in cash, shares or long-term incentive schemes to chief executives and chief financial officers for breaches of environmental, customer service or financial standards in a given financial year. Ms Adlington did not have a direct challenge for water companies in the UK but added that the Blue Marine Foundation was committed to coastal regeneration and improving UK waters. Ahead of the event, Norton said: 'My earliest memories of the sea are going on day trips to Scarborough. 'My whole village would cram into a coach and head to the beach for a day of fish and chips, rock and candy floss.' For every kilometre swum by participants at Joss Bay between 7am and 5pm on Friday, Talisker, who are supporting the event, will donate £150 to the foundation. The company has also pledged a further £112,608 to Blue Marine Foundation through sales of a limited edition whisky.

Soccer star Trinity Rodman gives an inside look into relationship with Ben Shelton at the French Open

US women's national soccer team star Trinity Rodman gave a behind-the-scenes look into her relationship with Ben Shelton, as the American dynamo competed at the French Open. Dennis Rodman's daughter was in Paris to watch her man storm to the last 16 of the men's singles draw. Shelton ran into Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros, losing one step away from the quarterfinals on clay. Shelton's stay in the French capital looked to be filled with time with Rodman when not competing, as the injured Washington Spirit forward shared a video of her time in Paris to her Instagram. The video was captioned 'No one else' with white-heart emoji and began with the pair holding hands and walking down a Parisian street. Then came a jump-cut to another day, where the couple are again holding hands and crossing the street. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Trinity Rodman (@trinity_rodman) The duo hard-launched their relationship in March, a few months before their time in Paris Rodman, 23, then shared a snap of the two kissing in the Paris night, seemingly after a nice dinner, which there was also a photo of in the reel. The video ended with Rodman showing Shelton in sweats, appearing to be transported to Roland Garros for a match. Shelton is part of the current American renaissance, alongside Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Taylor Fritz, chasing the likes of Jannik Sinner, Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic for major titles. The duo hard-launched their relationship in March, a few months after Shelton competed in the Australian Open. Shelton will not have to wait long for his next major opportunity, with Wimbledon beginning on June 30. Rodman's timeline for a return to the field is unknown, as she is dealing with a back injury.
