Lakeland leaders to vote on school speed zone cameras. Here's where they would go

LAKELAND, Fla. - Commissioners in Lakeland are set to vote Monday on a plan to install cameras aimed at cutting down on speeding in several school zones.
If approved, cameras would be placed near the following eight schools:
Lincoln Academy
Crystal Lake Elementary
Philip O'Brien Elementary
Southwest Middle
North Lakeland Elementary
Lakeland High
Lakeland Highlands Middle
Sleepy Hill Elementary
Why you should care
During a meeting in May, the city pointed to a study from May 2024 showing nearly 850 violations per day near these schools.
Additionally, Lakeland police said 25 Polk County Public School students were involved in vehicle-related crashes, resulting in 13 deaths, during the 2023-24 school year.

If cameras are installed, speeding in these zones could result in a $100 fine after an initial 30-day awareness campaign. Revenue from the fines would support school district security initiatives, school crossing guard recruitment, and city traffic safety programs.
Police also say cameras would allow officers to focus their patrols on other school zones.

Kennedy Blvd. TAMPA, Fla. - A popular dog bar in Tampa will close its doors for good this weekend, with Pups Pub's owners citing a years-long battle over changes to enforcement of state regulations. The backstory Pups Pub opened off W. Kennedy Blvd. in 2020 after the Florida Dept. of Health approved several dog bars across the state. In a post on social media Tuesday, the bar's owners said the business passed all health inspections during its first two years of operation, and a second location opened in downtown Orlando in 2022. Dig deeper The owners said things took a turn that same year when a newly-promoted FDOH official "unilaterally reversed the department's interpretation, deciding that operating an indoor/outdoor dog bar – which had been fully approved and compliant under FDOH jurisdiction for years – was suddenly prohibited." Pups Pub took legal action against the state agency, which said dogs are not permitted inside a business where anything consumable is served – even ice. The bar's owners argued the state was misinterpreting its own food regulations. Court records show that the First District Court of Appeal reversed the 2023 ruling on April 30, 2025. The appellate ruling reads, in part: "We agree with DOH that the challenged statements applied the governing law. Therefore, they do not constitute an unadopted rule in derogation of the statutory requirement that agency rules be established through the formal rulemaking process. What they're saying In Tuesday's post on social media, Pups Pub wrote, in part: "The FDOH's legal strategy was to isolate a single business to set a precedent before enforcing it on the rest of the industry. More than a dozen other dog bars are expected to close in the wake of this rule." What's next Pups Pub Tampa will host a farewell party this Saturday, June 7, from noon until 11 p.m. The owners say franchisees have been working to open new locations in Brandon and Clermont, which will be open-air. Some storms could produce wind gusts over 45 mph, though severe storms are not expected. On Thursday, showers remain likely in the afternoon, but incoming Saharan dust will reduce rain chances and air quality. ORLANDO, Fla. - Wednesday is a FOX 35 Weather Impact Day due to tropical moisture moving across Central Florida, resulting in numerous showers, downpours and storms this afternoon. There is a 70-80% chance for rain, with rain totals possibly exceeding 1 to 3 inches in many areas due to really heavy downpours. While severe storms are not likely, some storms may bring wind gusts over 45 mph. What to expect Generally overcast and muggy. Scattered showers and thunder begin around lunchtime and continue through the evening, on and off. A quick 1"–2" is possible inside of an hour, leading to minor street flooding in urban areas. The high will be 83°, which is 7° cooler than normal due to clouds and rain. Timeline The heaviest rain is expected to begin around the following times: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Southern areas, including Lakeland and the Tampa area 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Central Florida, including Orlando, Kissimmee, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Titusville, and Ocala 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Northern areas, including Daytona Beach, Palm Coast, and Gainesville Numerous chances of rain will come to an end around 9 p.m. with just a few sprinkles overnight.
