
Thinking about the Jersey Shore? These tips will help you save big on your summer rental
We might only be halfway through winter, but it's never too soon to start thinking about booking that summer rental down the shore.
CBS News Philadelphia asked a local listing agent what you should consider to save some money.
Duane Watlington, who runs VacationRentalsJerseyShore.com, a listing website for owners, says when and how you book will make a big difference in the price you ultimately pay. We met up with Watlington at a recently renovated, two-bedroom, oceanfront listing in Wildwood.
"This one ranges between just under $5,000 a week to just under $6,000," Watlington said.
Those prices are for peak season, which is July to mid-August. But Watlington said locking in your visit even just a few weeks before or after that timeframe can potentially save you thousands of dollars.
Watlington showed us pricing for that same property in late August.
"The last week of August, it drops down to just under $4,000," he said. "Then this is probably the best value week of the summer to come. Labor Day week, it's only $2,800."
The price dropped to $2,000 during the last week of September, when Watlington said the weather is generally still great.
"The water's warm, there's less crowds, and mostly everything is still open, especially on the weekends," he said.
Right now, interested renters have the best selection of inventory, according to Watlington, but things start filling up fast toward the end of February and into March.
While location is usually a top priority when picking a property, Watlington also says to make sure you know exactly what amenities you're getting and how many the unit sleeps.
To save even more, he recommends looking for booking sites that let you contact the owner directly.
"Avoid the service fees, taxes and additional charges that a Vrbo or AirBnb would add," he said. "That's going to save you, on average, about 27%, so if you think of weekly rental here in Wildwood at an average of $3,000 a week, that's almost $800."
But what about negotiating your way to a better price?
Watlington says you probably won't have much luck doing that, especially during prime summer weeks. Even outside of those, owners tend to bring down their pricing in the shoulder and offseason anyway.
Your best shot to negotiate might be for a longer stay of two or more weeks.

Airbnb names new CMO on tails of major platform overhaul

Airbnb has named Rebecca Van Dyck as chief marketing officer as it enacts a major push beyond vacation rentals into offering more travel services and experiences, according to a company blog post. Hiroki Asai, who has acted as the platform's global head of marketing since 2020, is moving into the newly created role of chief experience officer, where he will oversee Van Dyck. Van Dyck's resume includes past stints at Meta, Apple, Levi Strauss and creative agency Wieden + Kennedy. She departed Meta in 2022 after acting as chief operating officer of its Reality Labs division dedicated to developing virtual reality products and the metaverse. The executive began working with Airbnb earlier this year in a consultative capacity. As CMO, she will lead marketing, research and creative teams while helping guide Airbnb's product development. Hiroki will continue to steward Airbnb's marketing, design, product and community units, but with a sharper focus on the end-to-end experience for guests and hosts and the platform's overall product roadmap. In an email to employees, Airbnb Co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky said he has been trying to get Van Dyck on board since first meeting her in 2012. 'We're in the midst of a major transformation as a company — Airbnb is now more than a place to stay,' said Chesky. 'As we launch two new businesses, we need people around the world to understand this shift, and Becca brings exactly the kind of leadership we need for this moment.' Airbnb last month overhauled its app with a reimagining of its Experiences feature that aids users in identifying must-do activities at their travel destinations, such as tours and local hot spots. The company also introduced Airbnb Services, which allows people to connect with professionals like chefs, photographers and massage therapists. The idea behind the latter tool is to go toe-to-toe with the amenities available at a hotel. To complement the platform makeover, the brand recently launched an ad campaign with spots that use colorful animation to illustrate how Airbnb Experiences bring a sense of discovery back to travel. The effort also has a hefty amount of social-only content targeted around popular cities to vacation like Florence, Lisbon and London. Charleston County received $9.4 million from an Airbnb settlement. Here's how they plan to use it
CHARLESTON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — Charleston County leaders are developing a plan for how to spend millions of dollars received as part of a settlement with vacation rental giant Airbnb. The company agreed in February to pay $60 million to settle a lawsuit brought by more than a dozen South Carolina communities over unpaid accommodations taxes and business license fees. Charleston County recouped $9.4 million as part of that settlement, and members of the county's finance committee offered a first glimpse at how that money will be allocated at its June 5 meeting. The recommendations included roughly $1.4 million for housing initiatives, $1.6 million for financial system upgrades, $2.25 million for drainage projects, and $1.1 million for the visitors bureau. Officials also decided to put $2.5 million into a reserves fund that could be used for disaster relief in anticipation of possible cuts to FEMA. In addition, $500,000 will be allocated toward the City of Charleston's Rapid Housing program as a one-time startup cost, but a county spokesperson said the money would go back to the reserves if the city doesn't receive matching funds from other municipalities. Norway to introduce tourist tax amid record visitor numbers and overtourism concerns
Norway is set to become the latest European destination to introduce a tourist tax to combat concerns about rising visitor numbers. Lawmakers approved the new levy on Thursday, which allows municipalities to introduce a 3 per cent tax on overnight stays in 'areas particularly affected by tourism'. The law allows local authorities to apply the tax at their own discretion, and it will be added to accommodation charges. Authorities will also be allowed to adjust the percentage based on the season. The funds raised by the tax will be used exclusively to improve tourism infrastructure projects that benefit both visitors and local people. Municipalities will have to demonstrate that their facilities are inadequate and have their plans approved by the government to spend the funds. Cecilie Myrseth, Norway's minister of trade and industry, said on social media that her government had reached a 'historic agreement' to introduce a tourism tax that was 'in line with what they have in the rest of Europe'. A tax may also be applied to cruise ships that make stops in the country, particularly in areas that are most affected by overtourism. As tourists increasingly choose cooler, northern European destinations to get away from the heat, Norway has experienced a boom in visitor numbers. Last year, a record-breaking 38.6 million people booked accommodation in the country. That includes more than 12 million overnight stays by foreign tourists - a 4.2 per cent increase from 2023. Some previously quiet destinations have been overwhelmed, like the Lofoten islands, where eye-catching images of hiking trails posted on social media have led to an influx of visitors. With a population of 24,500 people distributed across several small towns and villages, keeping up with the cost of all these new visitors has been hard. A recent survey by industry organisation Norwegian Tourism Partners found that 77 per cent of people in Tromsø, in northern Norway above the Arctic Circle, thought there were too many tourists there. Visitors have been drawn by the Northern Lights, wildlife excursions, Sami cultural experiences and what the city itself has to offer. Some residents have even reported cases of people using their back gardens as toilets, and bemoaned the increased traffic clogging up Norway's roads.
