Buffalo Trace's portfolio of bourbon brands is stacked with names most whiskey fans could recite by heart even under anesthesia. Still, few of the whiskey juggernaut's iconic labels have cultivated a collector following like Blanton's. Case in point: The now famed Blanton's superfan with a collection worth ~$250,000, Dominic Guglielmi, whom we've had the privilege of speaking to on multiple occasions, turned his quest to secure every Blanton's offering released into a glorious whiskey online archive and eventually a book. With a catalog of over 50+ expressions in its history, there are plenty of unicorn Blanton's bottles that only a handful of collectors will ever lay eyes on. But to Blanton's credit, the brand has also made an effort to make the most coveted expression in the permanent lineup more accessible (loosely speaking) over the last several years.
Here's everything you need to know about Blanton's Straight From the Barrel.
As the name implies, Blanton's Straight From the Barrel is dumped from barrels and directly bottled, unfiltered, and at powerful cask strength, making it one of, if not the purist forms of Blanton's available for tasting.
The specific whisky pulled straight from the barrel happens to be Blanton's Gold Edition, which was officially brought to the U.S. in the summer of 2020. It's the same as standard Blanton's in every way, except that it's 10 proof points higher at 103 vs. the standard 93.
In case you're confused about the existence of Blanton's Gold Edition, our former drink editor, Will Price, provided a nice summary of the Blanton's lineup well back in 2020. 'The standard lineup includes Gold, Special Reserve (called Green), and a barrel-proof variant called Straight From the Barrel. Gold is the first of the international Blanton lineup to come to the US. The reason for the odd split is murky. The short version is a Japanese company called Takara Shuzo owns Blanton's brand and distribution rights everywhere except the US, where Blanton's is distributed by Buffalo Trace. Buffalo Trace still distills and ages for every expression — domestic or international.'
Like its non-cask-strength Blanton's Gold cousin, Blanton's Straight From the Barrel (often abbreviated to SFTB) is Blanton's 6—to 8-year-old bourbon bottled at full power—128 proof. As Buffalo Trace describes it, the bourbon is known for its 'strong 'intense, and powerful' flavors of dark chocolate, caramel, and nuts, as well as a spicey finish that's typical of super-high-proof bourbons.
SFTB used to be available only in international markets and was probably easiest to find in Japan.
But as with Blanton's Gold, Buffalo Trace announced that Blanton's SFTB would also be available in the U.S. starting in the fall of 2020 on a 'very limited basis'. Better yet, the U.S. versions would ship in the typical 750ml bottles (international bottles are only 700ml.)
Earlier this February, the 2025 World Whiskies Awards USA winners were unveiled at a gala in Kentucky. The event spotlighted the best American-made whiskey across a range of specialized categories.Blanton's Straight from the Barrel was named the Best Single Barrel Bourbon at the event. It had also previously earned a Silver Award in the Best Single Barrel Bourbon category in the 2022 World Whiskies Awards. The bottle has also stacked awards from the arguably more prestigious San Franciso World Spirits Competition, including Gold in 2022 and Double Gold in 2023, among others.
Well-known whiskey writer and reviewer Fred Minnick even shared an anecdote about his experience reviewing whiskey for the 2017 San Franciso World Spirits Competition, in which Blanton's Straight From the Barrel was robbed (in Minnick's opinion) of the Best Bourbon prize. But SFTB has also earned plenty of praise from other sectors of the whiskey community long before now. Most memorable, perhaps, is Breaking Bourbon writer Jordan Moskal's key question at the end of his review published back in 2016. 'Why isn't this a part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection yet?'The question seems more pertinent than ever, given Blanton's SFTB impressive trajectory since then. Whether it'll ever receive that distinction from Buffalo Trace remains to be seen, though it feels unlikely. For now, at least, Blanton's SFTB easily deserves consideration as one of the premium whiskeys the distillery makes, not named Van Winkle.

3 gold price questions that investors should be asking now

Investors considering gold should start contemplating the answers to three primary questions right now. Getty Images/iStockphoto The price of gold has been in the news so frequently in recent months that investors may have become immune to developments. But it's important to take a step back to fully appreciate how remarkable the price surge has been just since the start of 2024. At that point, in early January, the price of the metal per ounce was $2,063.73, having recently surpassed the $2,000 price point. But now, in early June 2025, barely 18 months later, the price for that same amount of metal comfortably sits close to $3,400. That's more than a $1,300 difference or, put another way, the price of gold has risen by around 65% from where it was in early 2024. And many signs are pointing toward another price record increase, perhaps as soon as this June. Against this backdrop, prospective investors may feel leery about getting started in the market. But gold is still a valuable hedge against inflation and a portfolio diversification tool thanks to its steady value. That makes the asset timeless for many investors. So it's still generally worth investing in, even now. To do so in a cost-effective and relatively secure way, however, it helps to go into the process informed and clear-eyed. And that begins with having the answers to some important gold price questions right now. Below, we'll detail three that investors should be asking about. Start protecting your portfolio with gold before the price rises again here. 3 gold price questions that investors should be asking now Here are three timely questions that potential gold investors should be asking about the price of the metal now: Should I wait for the price to drop before investing? It can be tempting to wait for the price of gold (or any asset) to decline before investing. And there may be some small windows of opportunity to do that with gold now. But waiting too long is inherently risky. That's because the price of gold over time, not accounting for minor fluctuations, only tends to rise. Waiting for a cheap time to invest may not make sense considering that it's unlikely to materialize. Waiting also means losing out on the protections gold can provide for your portfolio, which is particularly important to have now considering stock market uncertainty. Waiting comes with risk, then, that may not be worth it if you can still afford a small, but critical, portion of gold to add to your portfolio now. Learn more about gold's price here. When will the price change again? It's impossible to know exactly when the value of any asset will change … but there are some days this June when gold's price could do just that. In particular, when the next inflation report is released or when the Federal Reserve meets again to determine monetary policy, gold's price could respond. Depending on what that report shows for inflation in May or what the central bank says about its plans for interest rates, the price of gold could rise or fall, perhaps to a significant degree. If you already know that you want to invest in gold, then, and are just looking for a smart time to do so, monitor specific dates this June for an opportunity to do just that. What's a safe amount to invest in at today's high price? You can still invest in gold even with the price elevated, either via fractional gold amounts less than an ounce or dollar-cost averaging, in which you invest small amounts of money over a routine basis. That said, you should only do so up to a maximum of 10% of your overall portfolio and, depending on your investor profile and budget, that may be even less than 10%. In other words, you'll need to determine an affordable price point while also adhering to the common advice of limiting your gold investment to permit other, income-producing assets to flourish as intended. What that means in practical terms, however, is that a gold investment today, at the elevated price, may make up less of your overall portfolio than it would have in a cooler price climate. The bottom line While these are critical questions to ask about gold's price now, they're likely not the only ones prospective investors have, especially if they're considering the precious metals market for the first time. So, start by considering the answers to these three questions now but also consider speaking to a financial advisor or gold investing company who can help answer any additional queries you have. With a thorough approach and understanding of the gold investing market now you can better improve your chances of success both through this current price surge and in the months and years ahead.

Central banks on track for 4th year of massive gold purchases, Metals Focus says

By Polina Devitt LONDON (Reuters) - Central banks worldwide are on track to buy 1,000 metric tons of gold in 2025, which would be their fourth year of massive purchases as they diversify reserves from dollar-denominated assets into bullion, consultancy Metals Focus said. Gold prices are up 29% so far this year after hitting a record high of $3,500 per troy ounce in April on geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to roll out his tariff policies. The price rally has so far kept purchases by central banks, a crucial category of demand, unaffected with the first-quarter buying in line with the 2022-24 quarterly average, Metals Focus said in its annual report on Thursday. "The drivers that have underpinned de-dollarisation in recent years remain firmly in place," the consultancy said. "If anything, President Trump's unpredictable policy stance, his public criticism of (Fed chair) Jerome Powell and the deteriorating U.S. fiscal outlook have further eroded confidence in the U.S. dollar and Treasuries as ultimate safe-haven assets." "Elevated geopolitical tensions since the start of his administration have also curtailed the appeal of U.S. assets." Accounting for almost one fourth of total demand, central banks are the third largest category of gold consumption after the jewellery sector and physical investment. In 2025, purchases from central banks are expected to fall by 8% from last year's record high of 1,086 tons. In January-March, Poland, Azerbaijan, and China - consistent buyers in recent years - led the officially reported buying, Metals Focus said, adding that steady inflows into Iran also suggest further purchases by the Central Bank of Iran. Meanwhile, jewellery demand for bullion has been hit hard by the price rally. Gold jewellery fabrication fell 9% to 2,011 tons in 2024 and is expected to deliver a 16% slump this year with India and China accounting for much of this decline. The consultancy expects average gold prices to rise by 35% this year after 23% growth in 2024, and reach $3,210 per ounce "with further strength likely into 2026".
