Memorial Day Deal: I Highly Recommend This Anker Bluetooth Speaker, and It's $20 Off for a Limited Time

CNET27-05-2025

I've tested a lot of portable Bluetooth speakers, so I'm used to people asking me for recommendations. I like to point them to our list of the best Bluetooth speakers, but I also mention that I awarded a CNET Editors' Choice to the Anker Soundcore Boom 2 because it's well priced and delivers impressive sound, making it an excellent value.
There are plenty of Bluetooth speakers to choose from. But the Soundcore Boom 2 stands out for its compact, waterproof design and great value for the money. Compared with its competitors, this mini boom box speaker is already a good deal at its list price of $140. And right now Amazon has the black model on sale for $120, or 14% off, for Memorial Day. But with Memorial Day winding down, it's uncertain how much longer this deal will stick around.
I liked the original Soundcore Motion Boom, which made our list of the best Bluetooth speakers and was one of the better mini boom box Bluetooth speaker values over the last few years, selling for around $80. The 3.66-pound Boom 2 is priced a little higher but sounds substantially better, with more than double the power rating of the original, so it not only plays louder but kicks out more bass and offers better clarity at higher volumes (it's equipped with two tweeters and one subwoofer). It also has a couple of built-in LED lights to help create that party vibe.

Why I like this Anker speaker
The speaker's design isn't terribly sleek or eye-catching, but it's attractive enough and just the right size -- neither too big nor too small -- and you can choose between three color options. It also seems pretty durable, though it doesn't have a dust-resistance rating. The Boom 2 is fully waterproof (IPX7-rated) and floats should it fall into a body of water. Additionally, there's a USB-out port to charge your devices.
Battery life is also good. The speaker's rated for up to 24 hours of playback at moderate volume levels (it charges via USB-C, which is good), and you can tweak the sound and customize the lighting with the Soundcore app for iOS and Android. Battery life does dip if you engage the bass boost or activate the LED lighting.

Another Anker speaker to consider
If you're looking for even more powerful sound, Anker makes the Soundcore Boom 2 Plus. A bigger speaker, it puts out more sound with similar features to the Boom 2. However, it costs around $180, and I don't think it sounds twice as good as the Boom 2 (more like 25% to 30% better). Still, it's also a good value.

Amazon Deals of the Day: Lightning Deal Slashes 50% Off Anker's Portable Charger

Amazon sells a vast panoply of products, with new ones arriving daily. The retail giant carries everything from home essentials to tech gear and wellness items. As much as it loves adding new products, Amazon also loves cutting prices. Deciding which deals are worth grabbing (and which aren't) is a full-time job -- our job, specifically. That's why we scope out the top deals for you. Today, we spotted one of our favorite power banks down to half the regular price, but hurry supplies are going quick. We also found a two-pack of indoor Ring cameras for $60, down from $100. And finally, if you're looking for a solid pair of affordable headphones, Sony's budget pair just got a nice $22 price cut. Most of us are constantly on the go, which means we're bringing our devices with us. Keeping our devices like our phones charged can be a hassle, especially if you're hunting around for a place to plug your charger in. A portable charger can help you keep your phone powered up no matter where you are. The Anker Zolo portable power bank is our favorite portable charger for iPhones. We love it because it's pretty compact for an 10,000-mAh battery. It also has a pretty strong 30W charging power. It also has a LED screen with a battery life indicator. The USB-C cable tucks into a port on the battery, turning the cable into a lanyard when you don't have it plugged into a device. Normally $26, the black and pink color options are now down to $13. But hurry, this lighting deal is going fast. Protecting our homes is important to all of us, with many of us adding video doorbells and other types of security cams to the outside of our houses -- but what about the inside? Indoor security cameras can help you keep an eye on important areas, such as entryways, as well as your family and pets, no matter where you are. Many even opt to use these cams as a baby monitor. The Ring Stick Up Pro camera is our favorite portable indoor security camera of 2025. This camera can capture everything with 1080p HD video with features like Live View and Color Night Vision so you won't miss a thing. You can also get notifications to your phone when the camera detects movement, in real time. It works with Alexa so you can have a hands-free experience, too. You can score a two pack for $60 right now, bringing each camera to just $30. Since one camera normally retails for $60, you're getting these for basically half-off. Just like all nice things, much of the highest-quality audio gear is far from the cheapest. But we spotted a deal that can help bring down the cost of wireless headphones for bargain hunters. The Sony WH-CH520 wireless headphones are back to down to their all-time low price of $38. These headphones are our favorite on-ear budget headphones of 2025. They are lightweight and relatively comfortable considering they are on-ear headphones, and they're a good option for someone looking for something simple, as these headphones lack noise canceling and aren't packed with the high end features you'll find on other pairs. However, they have an exceptional battery life of up to 50 hours. They also have multipoint Bluetooth pairing, so you can pair them with two devices at the same time. Just about every color is on sale right now, so grab yours while you can. With so many deals on Amazon, deciding which ones are worth your money can be difficult. But CNET combs through what the world's largest online retailer has to offer and gathers the best deals for you.

Tech giants' indirect emissions rose 150% in three years as AI expands, UN agency says

By Olivia Le Poidevin GENEVA (Reuters) -Indirect carbon emissions from the operations of four of the leading AI-focused tech companies, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta, rose on average by 150% from 2020-2023, as they had to use more power for energy-demanding data centres, a United Nations report said on Thursday. The use of artificial intelligence is driving up global indirect emissions because of the vast amounts of energy required to power data centres, the report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the U.N. agency for digital technologies, said. Indirect emissions include those generated by purchased electricity, steam, heating and cooling consumed by a company. Amazon's operational carbon emissions grew the most at 182% in 2023 compared to three years before, followed by Microsoft at 155%, Meta at 145% and Alphabet at 138%, according to the report. The ITU tracked the greenhouse gas emissions of 200 leading digital companies between 2020 and 2023. Meta, which owns Facebook and WhatsApp, pointed Reuters to its sustainability report that said it is working to reduce emissions, energy and water used to power its data centres. The other companies did not respond immediately to requests for comment. As investment in AI increases, carbon emissions from the top-emitting AI systems are predicted to reach up to 102.6 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2) per year, the report stated. The data centres that are needed for AI development could also put pressure on existing energy infrastructure. "The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving a sharp rise in global electricity demand, with electricity use by data centres increasing four times faster than the overall rise in electricity consumption," the report found. It also highlighted that although a growing number of digital companies had set emissions targets, those ambitions had not yet fully translated into actual reductions of emissions.

You can charge three devices at once with this fast-charging Anker device so you never have to be without power. How many devices do you need to charge every day? Your phone, your tablet, your smartwatch, and plenty of other things? You only have a limited amount of wall outlets and places to put chargers, so make things easier on yourself and use a charger that can help you juice everything up at once. You can do just that by buying one from Anker, which is a reliable brand that's often on sale. In fact, there's one you can get right now if you want to go ahead and treat yourself, or stop worrying about how many outlets you need on a regular basis. Head over to Amazon to get the Anker Nano 100W USB-C Charger for just $36, down from its usual price of $55. That's $19 off and a discount of 35%. See at Amazon Your new favorite multitasking charger Anker is one of the most trusted names in charging tech, and this GaN (gallium nitride) charger is one of their best-reviewed for good reason. It's small (smaller than most laptop bricks) but can still pump out 100W of total power across two USB-C ports and one USB-A. That means you can charge a MacBook Pro, an iPad, and your phone all at once without seeing any slowdown. That's all made possible by Anker's power distribution tech. It can adjust output based on how many devices you plug in and what they need, so you're not losing efficiency even when you're multitasking. And unlike so many of those generic multi-port chargers that get suspiciously warm after 10 minutes, this one has a ton of safety features like temperature control and short-circuit protection. Anker also throws in a 5-foot USB-C to USB-C cable in the box, so you're not scrambling for extras right out of the gate. Whether you're someone who travels for work, a college student dealing with limited dorm outlets, or just someone tired of the 'one charger per device' lifestyle, this is the kind of purchase that can instantly simplify your setup. For just $36, you can't argue that you aren't getting some excellent value here. You get a charger with multiple ports that can get your phone back to 100% in a short amount of time from a familiar brand, and it's small enough to toss in a bag and take anywhere. It's also safe enough to leave alone even with all of its ports full, too. So if you're on the fence about it, go ahead and get one. You'll be glad that you did. See at Amazon
