'No trophies - but Edinburgh now a team to be proud of'
Edinburgh have played 26 games this season in all competitions. In 12 of those we have conceded a total of 16 tries in the 10-minute period following half-time.It is more than we concede in any other part of our matches. Over the season it has arguably cost Edinburgh at least two league wins. On Saturday it cost us a chance of a semi-final.The score Bulls got in the 51st minute and the fact they failed to cross the line again in the remainder of the match makes it hard to see past that 40-51 minute period as being decisive.Early in the game the broadcasters showed a graphic that told us Bulls forwards were 57kg heavier than Edinburgh. That weight certainly showed at scrum time and as weird as might seem when you score five tries it felt like a rearguard action for much of the 80 minutes.In a lot of ways our three games against Bulls this season typify what progress there has been.Game 1. I described Edinburgh as asthmatic and wasteful. Only one try.Game 2. A much improved and focused win. We looked like a team.Game 3. A five-try thriller where we just fell short on power.Depending on your viewpoint the progress is there. A semi-final and a quarter-final allied to a try count we have only surpassed once in our history is balanced out by the fact we won fewer games in the league than we did last year.There are no trophies. That's not new and if that's your reason for supporting Edinburgh, then to paraphrase Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, you've been misinformed.But there is now a team you can be proud of. A team who are putting their bodies on the line for their long-suffering supporters. A team that finally looks like it wants to live up to the 'on paper' reputation that seems to follow them about.We have some departures that could hurt, Jamie Ritchie probably chiefly among those, but we have recruited well and I'm excited to see them make their mark alongside some of the young players who are stepping up.I'm already looking forward to next season as long as we continue playing as if we have a chip on our shoulders as opposed to a silver spoon in our mouths.Sandy Smith can be found at The Burgh Watch, external

I received an interesting E-mail from a reader last week, following up on a recent long-term report on the single-motor Volvo EC40 I'm currently driving. It turns out that our reader, a keen petrolhead called Derek Dunthorne, is running the twin-motor version of the Volvo EC40, and although it's in a different specification to mine and something of an upgrade, we share many similar opinions. Advertisement - Article continues below Derek loves the interior, telling me that the 'Android-based interface is brilliant – easy to use and completely logical – although, like most folk, I would prefer knobs for the heating and ventilation'. He also gave me some background information on his buying decision. Moving away from several Porsche Macans, this would be his – wait for it – 56th car. What particularly impressed him was Volvo's interior quality and finish; they're not quite at Porsche standards, in his opinion, but better than the Korean alternatives. He initially considered the smaller and newer EX30, but found he preferred the more conventional driver displays of the EC40, which is something I happen to agree with. It also turns out that we are even getting the same miles per kWh. But the really interesting information from Derek was beyond even what our long-term reports can offer. It transpires that he bought the car at six months old with 1,800 miles on the clock for a discount of 33 per cent on the new price and a three per cent PCP (to hedge against depreciation). He was impressed with Volvo's used car 30-day exchange policy, and as it transpired that was a good choice, because he actually ended up using it. Unhappy with his first car for a number of reasons, he returned it and the company refunded his money and allowed him to choose another, which he now loves. In terms of running costs, his are a fraction of mine. He uses the Octopus Energy Intelligent Go tariff that enables him to charge overnight for 7.0p per kWh. This means he has spent around £120 on electricity in 12 months and about 4,000 miles. Like many, he has never needed to use public charging, with all his journeys having been no longer than the 200 miles that the Volvo can comfortably complete. In the digital era, we often hear about information overload, but Derek's E-mail and the context of his purchase and ongoing experience really brought home the power of information for car buyers. South Africa name nine uncapped players in expansive squad
CAPE TOWN, June 5 (Reuters) - Nine uncapped players have been named in an expansive 54-man South Africa squad for the first four of the country's 14 international matches this year. Coach Rassie Erasmus on Thursday retained 31 of the squad that won the 2023 World Cup in a sign of continuity but has also made clear he intended using tests against the Barbarians, Italy and Georgia to try out new prospects. The uncapped players include Northampton Saints eighthman Juarno Augustus and hooker Marnus van der Merwe from Scarlets in Wales plus locally-based prop forwards Neethling Fouche and Asenathi Ntlabakanye, flanks Renzo du Plessis and Vincent Tshituka and utility forward Cobus Wiese, whose brother Jasper is a regular in the squad. The new backs are Sharks centre Ethan Hooker and Ntokozo Makhaza, who has been selected from university rugby without any franchise experience. The squad assembled on Sunday except for players still involved in the closing stages of the United Rugby Championship or English Premiership. 'We are excited to have the luxury of announcing a squad with so much depth and talent,' Erasmus said in a statement. 'Having an expanded squad will not only afford us the opportunity to have productive training sessions, but it will also bode well for the younger players in the group to learn from the senior players, many of whom are Rugby World Cup champions." South Africa used 50 players last season in an attempt to balance the load and build towards the 2027 World Cup in Australia. 'With a few more talented youngsters in this group, we hope that they will learn valuable lessons and stake a strong claim for places in what will be a challenging, yet exciting season,' the coach added.
