We're ready to raise Almatti dam height if there are no legal problems, says Minister
The State government is ready to increase the height of the Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir on the Krishna at Almatti if there are no legal problems, Minister M.B. Patil said in Vijayapura on Sunday.
He was responding to a suggestion by Minister Shivanand Patil that the State will not face any legal problems if it were to increase the height of the dam by one metre.
This suggestion, Mr. Shivanand Patil claimed, was given by senior advocate Mohan Kataraki, who has represented the State in the Supreme Court.
M.B. Patil said that he has no information of such a suggestion by Mr. Kataraki.
'However, we are open minded about it. We will consult our legal team and go ahead with increasing the dam height if it will not invite any legal challenges. We are willing to take up land acquisition and rehabilitation, if the height is to be increased,' the Minister for Industries said.
M.B. Patil dismissed statement made by some farmers leaders and politicians in Maharashtra that impounding water in the Almatti is leading to flooding in Maharashtra, saying they have no scientific basis.
'There have been two study reports that have proved that impounding of water in the Almatti has no effect on flooding in Maharashtra. This is an unfounded belief. There is no need to panic,' he said.
Earlier, he chaired an urgent meeting of officials for flood control, COVID-19 preparedness, moon preparations and a review of the district's standing in SSLC and PU examination results.
He also spoke to officials about preparing for a Cabinet meeting in Vijayapura district.
He told reporters that the government will consider all options to improve the quality of education, including exploring possibilities of working with private institutions.
To a query, he said that he will speak to Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to provide direct railway connectivity to Vijayapura from Hubballi and Hosapete.
M.B. Patil said that the State government will file an appeal in the Supreme Court to clear hurdles for the airport in Vijayapura.
He laid the foundation stone for basic amenities like high-mast electric lights, bus facilities and sewage system in the Karnataka Housing Board Colony on Ittangihal Road. A water supply project at an estimated cost of ₹90 lakh was launched. He thanked residents for planting 1,500 trees.
The Minister inaugurated an indoor stadium in Kanakadas Colony that has a gymnasium, shuttle badminton court, basketball and other facilities. He also inaugurated a unit of the Indira Canteen inaugurated on the District Hospital premises.
MLA Viththal Katakadond, Urban Development Authority chairman Abdul Hameed Mushrif, Deputy Commissioner T. Bhoobalan, City Corporation Commissioner Vijaykumar Mekkalaki, officers, community leaders and others were present.

The project, approved by the bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice SC Sharma, enables the state to utilise temple funds to acquire about 5 acres of land near the shrine. Calls for redevelopment intensified after a stampede-like incident took place during the Janmashtami celebrations in 2022, which resulted in two fatalities. In Sept 2023, Allahabad high court directed the state govt to implement a corridor plan to manage crowds and ensure safety. Although the state said it engaged with all stakeholders, Shebaits and local residents have claimed they were excluded from discussions. On Monday, Agra's divisional commissioner Shailendra Kumar Singh, Mathura DM Chandra Prakesh Singh, Agra range DIG Shailesh Kumar Pandey and additional officials held a meeting with the stakeholders to seek a resolution. Shailendra Kumar Singh said, "The proposed corridor has been cleared by the SC. The locals have raised some issues, and we have reached out to them. In the issues related to the temple, we ensured that no change will be there to the customs and traditions of the temple. Shopkeepers had doubts related to compensation, and we cleared them. The streets in and around the temple are narrow and unsuitable for the influx of people who visit the temple daily, so this corridor will be beneficial for all the stakeholders. "

Mother's whereabouts ‘unknown' after detention by Assam police, son knocks on Supreme Court door
Monowara Bewa, whose son's Habeas Corpus petition the Supreme Court has agreed to hear next week, lives in Khagrabari village in Dhubri district with her family and is among several people who the Assam police have detained since May 23 in a crackdown against people declared foreigners by the state's Foreigners' Tribunals. Her son, 26-year-old Iunuch (Yunus) Ali, has alleged that she has been picked up for deportation, and her whereabouts since then are not known. Bewa was declared a foreigner by an FT in 2016 and placed in detention in Assam's Kokrajhar. She was released on bail in 2019 following the Supreme Court's directions to this effect for those who had completed three years in detention. The Gauhati High Court had upheld the FT order in 2017, and the family approached the Supreme Court through a Special Leave Petition the same year. While the Supreme Court has agreed to hear her son's petition, back in Dhubri, her family remains in the dark about her whereabouts since she was detained on May 24. 'That day, she got a call from the Gauripur police station asking her to report with her documents. Since she goes every month because of her bail conditions, we thought they needed her for something related to that. She and her son went around 5 pm. They were made to wait there until late at night, when a senior official came to take her away, saying he was following instructions from higher authorities. The next day, we went to the office of the border police SP in Dhubri, but the in-charge there said he did not know anything. It has been eight days, and we still don't know where she is,' said her nephew, Maminur Hussain (37). Bewa's neighbour, Jahanara Hussain (55), who is also a local women's leader who has been helping the family with the case, said that on Sunday, she received the link to a Facebook video that purportedly showed Bewa in Bangladesh alongside four others. YSRCP alleges AP govt withdrew COVID advisory to facilitate TDP's Mahanadu event, blames rise in cases
Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Spokesperson Putha Siva Sankar Reddy alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government withdrew the COVID Advisory to favour a TDP event in Mahanadu. Putha Siva Sankar Reddy said, 'On May 24, 2025, the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare issued an advisory warning against all mass gatherings, including prayer meetings, public events, and crowded spaces. However, within just three days--on May 27--the advisory was withdrawn, clearly to allow the TDP to proceed with its massive Mahanadu event.' He further alleged that the TDP government was not bothered about public health. 'As a result of this irresponsible decision, COVID cases have spread across the state, including in Kadapa, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, and Anantapur districts. So far, neither Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu nor other officials have conducted a single review meeting on the COVID situation. At the very least, they should show concern for public health,' he further said. 'During the YSRCP regime, effective measures were taken to handle the pandemic. We implemented the Family Doctor concept and ensured door-to-door delivery of medicines. In contrast, today, all medical colleges have been privatised, and even basic medicines are unavailable in government hospitals,' he further said. Reddy further said that the YSRCP is demanding a review of the COVID situation. 'The state government should conduct a review of COVID and take precautionary measures,' he added. Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India's active COVID-19 case count stood at 3,961 as of 8 AM on Monday, June 2. The cumulative number of deaths since January this year has reached 32, with four new deaths reported on Sunday. According to official data, 203 new cases were added to the active case count since Sunday. Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala each reported one COVID-19 death since Sunday. Delhi reported 47 more COVID-19 cases, increasing the total active cases in the national capital to 483. In Kerala, active COVID-19 cases rose to 1,435, with 35 new cases reported since Sunday.
