Each week, readers vote on central Indiana students who were nominated by their schools for their excellence in the classroom and beyond.
Readers can vote for their favorite student throughout the week at the bottom of this story on IndyStar.com, with polling closing at noon on Thursday, April 24. Winners will be announced every Friday.
This contest aims to introduce readers not just to the student who winds up winning but to all of the highly accomplished nominees.
Here's what nominating school leaders had to say about this week's nominees:
Jaysi Klink, a senior at Guerin Catholic High School
Jaysi Klink is a bold risk-taker on stage! In the House Band Showcase, she had an electric, entertaining energy that wowed the audience. In Godspell, our spring musical, she took risks vocally and as a performer, as she commits with her whole heart to communicating her love for Christ to the audience. Jaysi has been a leader throughout the process of the musical, and we are so proud of her hard work!
Ryan Mueller, a senior at Franklin Central High School
Ryan Mueller is an outstanding senior at Franklin Central High School! Not only is he a four-time No. 1 varsity singles tennis champ for our school, he has given countless hours to community service through the National Honor Society. Ryan's academic focus in Dual Credit World Literature, compassion, and ability to support and uplift others make him an outstanding Flash!
Morgan Deal, a sophomore at Ben Davis High School
Morgan strived to become the best she can in school. She is persistent and takes responsible risks. She has pushed through every hurdle and desires to learn more. Morgan has completely changed since switching back to in-person school. We could not be more proud of her.
Malaya Frye, a senior at Indianapolis Metropolitan High School
Malaya maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher as a student athlete as well. Cheer is her sport of choice and her bubbly personality meshes with it well. Being aggressive early in her academics has allowed her to earn high school credits ahead of time, leaving room in her schedule to become an office assistant at Indy Met; this position is only reserved for the top students at Indy Met and comes with great responsibility and accountability, which is exactly what Malaya possesses. Malaya's post-secondary plans include studying to become a licensed Psychologist to assist those in her community who struggle with mental health. Currently, Malaya is deciding which college she'll attend as she has received admission to each she's applied.
Phelan Sloane, a senior at Roncalli High School
Roncalli Communications teacher Julie Albertson states "Phelan has proven to be a critical member of the yearbook staff this year. She has not only created well photographed and designed pages, but she has also asked to help with other pages. I know I can count on her to get her work done in an excellent manner and also to help make the work that others do even better." Leadership activities within the classroom and a willingness to be of service are also cited.
Danielle Morrison, a senior at Martinsville High School
Danielle is a member of the Cooking Club, Book Club, GSA, and JAG. She is a member of the M.H.S. Unified Flag Football Team, Unified Bowling Team, Unified Track and Field Team, and Sparkle Cheer. Sparkle Cheer was her favorite H.S. activity, and Mrs. Cheatham's Teaching Class is her favorite Class. She enjoys working with Students at a local Elementary School (Smith Fine Arts Elementary) in their classroom, where she works with first-grade teachers and Students. Danielle's plans include wanting to be a book author. She enjoys going to church each week with her family.
Preslee Goodwine, a senior at Lawrence North High School
Preslee Goodwin excels academically, ranking among the top in her class and on track for an honors diploma. Preslee embraces a challenging course load, showcasing her commitment to education. In addition to her academics, she is a key member of the cheer squad and shines in show choir and drama. Her leadership and dedication in these activities inspire her peers. What truly sets Preslee apart is her positivity and infectious smile, which enriches the environment for everyone. For these reasons, I believe Preslee deserves this recognition as Student of the Week.

'I'm ecstatic to graduate my junior year; that's a real big treat for me,' Dim'Mya Norman, now a mom of 2-year-old twins, told ABC affiliate WRTV before she graduated from Indianapolis Metropolitan High School (Indy Met) on Saturday, June 7. Norman was a 15-year-old freshman when she first learned she was pregnant. "I was shocked, of course, and I was scared," she told the outlet, adding that she 'felt like a stereotype.' She even considered leaving school. But Norman got through the huge life change with the help of Indy Met, a public school that helps students navigate barriers to their education. The school did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. After she gave birth to her twins, Norman's favorite class shifted from English to child development, an elective course that taught parenting lessons and provided students with baby supplies, CW affiliate WISH-TV reported. 'They gave us advice and told us things they wished they had known when they were pregnant with their first child,' Norman told the outlet. 'They also provided me with items I didn't even know I needed.' Indy Met also provides supplemental services to help with housing, transportation and free child care, WRTV reported. While working towards her diploma, Norman found a job and took college classes. With a full-ride scholarship in hand, she is set to attend Ball State University, according to the outlet. New 54 Below Show By Liz Callaway Celebrates Music Of Stephen Schwartz
Liz Callaway, a highly honored actress, singer and recording artist, will perform a new show dedicated to the songwriter Stephen Schwartz at 54 Below, in New York's theater district, this week. According to 54 Below, the show, The Wizard and I: Liz Callaway Sings Stephen Schwartz, will feature 'songs from an extraordinary career that has spanned nearly 60-years (and in every form of media), as well as a brand new song. . . Liz honors Stephen in her signature way, pairing his iconic songs with tales of their lifelong professional relationship and friendship. Featuring Academy Award and Grammy-winning tunes from Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, The Baker's Wife, and more, The Wizard and I is a personal celebration of the man who made a witch take flight and gave a bird sight.' Musical direction will be by Alex Rybeck. Speaking this week with Callaway said she will perform Schwartz's 'Bless the Lord,' from Godspell, which she sang in her first show in New York, off-Broadway, in 1979; she said she hasn't sung it since then. Equally noteworthy, she will perform a song Schwartz wrote for her personally a few years ago, 'Fearless,' that noone has ever heard before. Callaway said she has loved Schwartz's music since she attended high school in Chicago, when she saw the national touring production of Pippin three times. She also will perform Schwartz's song from 'The Baker's Wife,' 'Meadowlark,' which she said is her 'absolute favorite' song to sing. She said she began performing it as a singing waitress in New York, subsequently recording it. She also called it 'one of my most requested songs,' describing it as a 'story song. And it's just like a three-act play. It's so fun as an actor to get to experience that song and all the different emotions and the memories.' Calling Schwartz a 'brilliant composer and lyricist,' she also said 'he's loved by different generations.' She added, 'One thing I love and really appreciate about Stephen is that he really encourages people to put their own stamp on his songs. He's just so happy for people to bring themselves to his songs. 'Another thing I love about him is he is such a champion of other writers, and he has helped so many young composers and encouraged them. It's a real passion of his, and I think it's incredible how he has given back to so many people,' she concluded. Callaway is a Grammy and Tony nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer, and recording artist. She made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Baby, and for five years, won acclaim as Grizabella in Cats. She also has provided the singing voice for numerous animated movies, including the Oscar-nominated Anastasia. Her latest album, To Steve With Love: Liz Callaway Celebrates Sondheim was nominated for a Grammy Award for best traditional pop vocal album last year.
