‘New national consensus' must reject discrimination, says PN MP
Saifuddin Abdullah said there needs to be a new kind of politics based on the struggles of various races, as well as moderation and reducing extreme polarisation.
PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional's (PN) vision of a 'new national consensus' must include components that promote inclusivity and reject discrimination, says Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah.
Saifuddin, a senior Bersatu leader and former foreign minister, said the proposal announced by PN deputy chairman Hamzah Zainudin was significant, as it sought to unite all levels of politics and civil society, regardless of race, religion, or region.
Saifuddin Abdullah.
He said any such framework must be grounded in religious values, historical and cultural experience, and the founding principles of the nation as outlined in the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara.
'To uphold inclusivity means enhancing the spirit of developmental partnership and consultation between the three key sectors of society – government, business, and civil society – in the decision-making process,' he said in a commentary published by Sinar Harian.
'There needs to be a new kind of politics based on a multiracial struggle, moderation, and centrism, while reducing extreme polarisation.'
Saifuddin said the public sector must empower itself through commitment, expertise, and the use of technology, while the business community must strengthen its competitiveness to support Malaysia's growth as a trading nation.
'The government should facilitate the business sector by acting as a 'shareholder', not merely a 'tax collector'.
'Civil society must become more professional. The world of volunteerism has been enhanced with new approaches (such as the solidarity economy and social entrepreneurship),' the Bersatu Supreme Council member added.
On the principle of rejecting discrimination, Saifuddin said no one should be left behind, marginalised, or be underserved.
'More specifically, there must be no discrimination against citizens based on religion, race, descent, birthplace, or gender.'
Hamzah outlined his vision for a 'new national consensus' on May 22 at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. He said the initiative aimed to bridge Malaysia's political and social divides and chart a path towards a more prosperous future.
His proposal centred on three core pillars: shared goals, shared prosperity, and compassionate governance.

‘Incumbents make the best candidates': SUPP to defend seats, help new faces build stronger team
SIBU, May 31 — Incumbents from Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) will get to defend their respective seats in the coming Sarawak election, opined Datuk Michael Tiang. The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government and Pelawan assemblyman expressed confidence in the performance and track record of current representatives. 'We're going to field incumbents (in the coming Sarawak election). I believe incumbents make the best candidates because they have already participated in elections and have proven track records. 'Not only are we going to field our incumbents, but we also want our incumbents to help those new and fresh candidates in our (SUPP) constituencies. 'This will help us build a larger and stronger team to serve Sarawak,' Tiang told reporters, when met prior to the distribution of rice dumplings to senior citizens at Jalan Bunga Teratai here today. The event was organised by SUPP Pelawan Youth section, distributing over 500 packs of dumplings in conjunction with the Dragon Boat Festival today. On the timing of the next state polls, Tiang said he does not foresee the state election being called this year. 'At the moment, I have not sensed any 'breeze' about the Sarawak election. Primarily, I think people are focusing on Sabah (election) first, followed by Johor and Melaka. After that, I believe you'll start feeling some 'winds' about the Sarawak Election.' 'And if you ask me whether Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready, or if SUPP is ready – we're always ready, because GPS under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has been working very hard. 'Every year, we have been working to find more revenue streams for Sarawak, so that we can make Sarawak financially independent. Our people can enjoy the fruits of our autonomy over natural resources.' On this, he cited the example of the joint declaration between Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros), which clearly affirmed Sarawak's regulatory control over her own natural gas. 'Elections are simply a time for the people to assess us. But we are always working hard to serve Sarawak, in line with the promises outlined in our manifesto,' Tiang concluded. Among those present at the event was Penghulu Ting Tien Huat. — The Borneo Post

Tengku Zafrul replacing me? Please pray that I stay as Selangor MB while you're on Haj, Amirudin tells minister
GOMBAK, May 31 – Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has today downplayed speculation that Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz's entry into PKR was part of a plan to replace him The PKR vice-president also jokingly said he had asked Tengku Zafrul to pray for his job security while the latter is performing the Haj in Mecca. 'In my view, it's a long shot. I don't think that path is likely, as it would require a by-election,' he was quoted saying by Kosmo!, referring to Tengku Zafrul replacing him. 'We only have about two and a half years left in the term, so there isn't much room to manoeuvre. We'll have to monitor any developments.' Amirudin reiterated PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh's statement that the party has yet to receive an official membership application from Tengku Zafrul. He noted that Zafrul's inclusion in PKR would strengthen the party and improve collaborative efforts, citing past cooperation when Zafrul was finance minister. 'Now, as the minister of investment, trade and industry, we're also collaborating in sectors such as aerospace and semiconductors. 'We already have a strong working relationship, and I believe it will only improve,' he said. Amirudin also said discussions had been held with Umno to establish mutual understanding following Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave the party. 'There had been talk of Tengku Zafrul joining since last year. I believe an understanding can or has been reached — I'm not fully informed on that matter,' he added. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul said he has resigned from Umno and announced plans to apply for membership in political ally PKR. The investment, trade and industry minister is also vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief.
