Dogs from great Danes to terriers head into the ring at Westminster show

Independent11-02-2025

Big dogs are having their day at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, where a bunch of massive breeds are being judged Tuesday.
Although Great Danes, mastiffs, Newfoundlands and others classified as 'working' dogs are competing, so are terriers, the mostly small vermin-hunters known for their outsized personalities. Also up are an array of retrievers, spaniels, setters and other 'sporting' dogs that traditionally worked alongside hunters to bag birds.
The best in show trophy will be awarded late Tuesday to one of seven finalists at the storied show.
Four finalists were chosen Monday: a bichon frisé called Neal, a whippet and repeat runner-up known as Bourbon, a shih tzu called Comet who's been a finalist before, and a German shepherd named Mercedes, who came in second last year. Three more contenders will be selected Tuesday evening.
Whatever happens in the end, it's a last hurrah in the show ring for Mercedes, who is retiring after Tuesday.
'A good German shepherd is an all-purpose dog,' says co-breeder Sheree Moses Combs of Wardensville, West Virginia. Some of her pups have become service dogs for wounded veterans, she said.
'Dog shows are fun, but that is what our breed is all about,' she said.
Regardless who gets the trophy at Westminster, there are others who also score points with the crowd. As the semifinals returned Monday night to Madison Square Garden for the first time in five years, spectators shouted out the names of their favorite canine competitors as if they played for one of the pro teams that call the Garden home, the NBA's New York Knicks and NHL 's New York Rangers.
'Love you, Lumpy!' someone yelled to a Pekingese named Lumpy, who earned laughs for his ambling gait. Calaco, a Xoloitzcuintli, got huge cheers for a focused, confident performance that also earned him some recognition from the judge. Xoloitzcuintlis (pronounced shoh-loh-eets-KWEEN'-tlees), are hairless dogs with deep roots in Mexico.
Every dog at Westminster is a titled champion, but they also are household pets. Some do therapy work, search-and-rescue or other canine jobs.

NBA, WNBA extend partnerships with 2K video game

June 13 - The NBA and WNBA agreed in principle to terms for a multi-year global partnership expansion with the 2K video game, the leagues announced on Friday. Also, 2K agreed in principle to terms to extend its relationships with the NBA G League and USA Basketball. "NBA 2K has engaged a new generation of basketball fans in an increasingly digital world," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "By expanding our partnership and creating NBA Take-Two Media, we look forward to building on the incredible success of the NBA 2K franchise." Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two Interactive, said he was happy to continue the partnership with the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). "I would like to thank Adam Silver, (NBPA executive director) Andre Iguodala, and all our partners at the NBA and NBPA for their continued support and shared vision to empower NBA 2K to become the premier interactive entertainment basketball franchise," Zelnick said. "We are excited to unveil NBA Take-Two Media and look forward to seeing how it will create an entirely new and multi-faceted NBA experience for our communities." That also applies to the WNBA, which saw its stars first appear in NBA 2K20. "2K is where millions of young fans deepen their interest and fall further in love with the game of basketball. That's why this partnership is so important," WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. "As the WNBA continues to reach new milestones on the court and across fandom, our presence in NBA 2K ensures that our league and athletes are visible, celebrated, and inspiring the next generation of WNBA fans around the world." Terri Carmichael Jackson, the executive director of WNBPA, labeled Friday's news as a defining moment for women's basketball. "Our players continue to raise the bar, and this renewed partnership with 2K ensures their impact is felt not just on the court, but across culture, gaming and the global growth of the sport," she said. "This expansion will elevate the entire league and the women who power it. It's also a recognition of the players' business value and their role in driving the future of the game." Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson and the legendary Vince Carter adorned the covers of the NBA 2K25 series of video games. Tatum was on the cover of the standard edition, Wilson represented the game's WNBA version and Carter served as the face of the Hall of Fame edition. --Field Level Media

Ditch your weekend plans to watch 'addictive' Italian crime thriller for free

If you're prepared to spend your weekend with two detectives on the hunt for a serial killer, Channel 4 has your next binge watch waiting. In the Italian crime drama Pale Mountains – titled Brennero when it was released in the US and Canada earlier this year – there's a murderer on the loose who is exclusively targeting German-speaking locals. Set in the Alpine city bridging Italy and Austria, the new four-part gritty thriller touches on the political and cultural forces at work in what is the meeting point between northern and southern Europe. All the while, a manhunt unfolds for a serial killer the police tried to catch years before but failed to. Think David Fincher's 2007 film Zodiac for what sort of vibe you'll get. The killer laid low for three years, but when a German man is killed, it has all the hallmarks of the notorious serial killer who was never caught. Heading up the investigation in the city of Bolzano are a classically mismatched pair of law enforcement officers, with grisled and discredited inspector Paolo Costa (Matteo Martari) and ambitious but rookie prosecutor Eva Kofler (Elena Radonicich). As they try to piece together the serial killer's identity, Costa and Kofler must also settle their differences, with radically contrasting approaches to hunting down the infamous Monster of Bolzano (Paolo Briguglia). The two officers become a microcosm for the differences within Bolzano itself as they try to uncover the so-called Monster, who has shattered what was an already fragile the sense of community. The Italian and German-language drama is now available for free on Channel 4 through the broadcaster's Walter Presents offshoot. Launching back in 2016, it is an on-demand platform with a selection of award-winning foreign-language dramas, hand-picked by Walter Iuzzolino. Strap in, because the Pale Mountains episodes are bumper-length and close to two hours a piece. More Trending Within the four two-hour episodes, there's a focus on the main manhunt, as well as other cases woven in around it and the personal lives of those involved. The show has a 6.9 rating on IDMb, from over 100 user reviews, and has been labelled an 'addictive watch' by Good Housekeeping. View More » Pale Mountains is available to stream on Channel 4.
