Mitch Marner
is having quite a week. He became a dad and a playoff hero by Wednesday. His third-period goal helped the
Toronto Maple Leafs
. This also beat the
Florida Panthers
4-3 in Game 2. This gave Toronto a 2-0 lead in the series.
With the game tied 3-3 early in the final frame. Marner found space along the boards and fired a quick shot. That too through traffic, where the puck slipped past Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.
Operation Sindoor

He also appeared screened and caught off-guard.
Marner's finish came in just 17 seconds. After Florida had tied the game; it was a key response; swift, composed, and momentum-shifting.
The 28-year-old forward had subtle reminders of his new role as a father stitched into his gear, however, there was nothing flashy in how he played; just quiet confidence and focus.
Woll Answers Call in Goal for Toronto
Mitch Magic Strikes Again 🪄
With starter Anthony Stolarz injured, Joseph Woll stepped in for the Maple Leafs. It was his first playoff start this season. But he looked ready from the start.
Woll made 25 saves on the night. That included a crucial stop on Mackie Samoskevich late in the third. He kept the Panthers at bay while the Leafs held onto their narrow lead.
Woll hadn't started since mid-April, but he stayed prepared. His performance reflected that. Calm, steady, and composed; he did what was needed and more.
Toronto's defensive unit helped, too. Jake McCabe cleared a dangerous rebound with under six minutes left, and the Leafs blocked lanes in the final stretch.
Leafs Find Goals Across the Lineup

Florida opened the scoring in the first period with a power-play goal from Aleksander Barkov. But the Leafs answered before the break; Max Pacioretty tipped in a Morgan Rielly shot to tie the game 1-1.
Toronto added two more in the second. William Nylander buried a quick chance after a Pacioretty setup. Then Max Domi scored on a 2-on-1 rush to make it 3-2.
Florida equalized twice, with goals from Brad Marchand and Anton Lundell. But each time, Toronto found a way back. The Leafs' offense didn't rely on just one line; it came from all over.
Panthers Push Late But Fall Short Again
Florida had chances late in the third. Sam Reinhart hit the post with just over three minutes left. Pressure increased, but the Leafs didn't panic.
Their puck management improved. Their defense stayed compact. They didn't give Florida much room to create clean looks.
Even with Aaron Ekblad back from suspension, the Panthers couldn't shift the momentum. Game 3 becomes critical as the series heads to Sunrise.

Leafs Look Focused and Resilient
Toronto's 4-3 win showed more than skill. It showed maturity. Marner balanced personal joy with playoff intensity. Woll delivered under unexpected pressure. And across the lineup, the Leafs stayed composed. With a 2-0 series lead, they've put the Panthers on notice. Game 3 will test whether Florida can push back; or if Toronto continues to rise.

Will Mitch Marner leave the Leafs this summer or stay loyal to Toronto Maple Leafs?

Will Mitch Marner leave the Leafs this summer or stay loyal to Toronto Maple Leafs (Image via Getty) A big update has come from NHL insider Chris Johnston about Mitch Marner, the star forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This news was shared on The Chris Johnston Show recently and gives fans a better idea of what could happen with Marner when NHL free agency begins on July 1st, 2025. Marner's future with the Leafs is still not confirmed, but there's now a clearer picture of what might happen next. Mitch Marner might leave, but Toronto Maple Leafs still in the mix Hockey journalist Chris Johnston stated during an episode of The Chris Johnston Show on June 5, 2025, that Mitch Marner is expected to "test the open market." Marner will probably listen to offers from other NHL teams once free agency formally begins on July 1st, 2025. However, Johnston also mentioned that the Toronto Maple Leafs will still be one of the teams Marner will seriously consider. Johnston said, 'The Leafs will be in the mix. He has strong ties to the city and the team. It's not a sure exit.' Mitch Marner has played his entire NHL career with the Leafs since being drafted in 2015. His current contract has a no-movement clause, which means he controls where he plays. This clause will stay in effect until the end of his deal on July 1st. The Leafs' general manager, Brad Treliving, is expected to be part of those talks. Marner's agent has not made any public statements yet, but sources close to the situation told Sportsnet that the 27-year-old is 'open to exploring options,' especially with playoff success still missing in Toronto. Johnston added, 'He wants to win. That's the biggest thing right now. If he believes it can happen in Toronto, there's still a chance he stays.' The final decision could come close to or on July 1st, when NHL teams are allowed to make formal offers.

'Time will tell with repercussions': Mitchell Starc issues first statement after pulling out of IPL 2025 midway

Mitchell Starc explained why he didn't return to the IPL 2025 after its resumption. Starc said due to safety concerns after Operation Sindoor, he decided not to go back. The Australian pacer added that he remains committed to Delhi Capitals and is ready to face the repercussions. read more London: Mitchell Starc is still 'heavily committed' to his Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals but only 'time will tell the repercussions' after he decided not to return after the resumption of the tournament unlike some of his other Australian colleagues. Starc decided against returning to India when IPL resumed on May 17 following a 10-day break after country's armed forces executed Operation Sindoor, a military operation in response to Pakistan-backed terrorists killing 26 civilians in Pahalgam. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Starc, who was a vital cog in the Capitals' bowling line-up, took 14 wickets in 11 matches, featured in the contest against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on May 8 when lights abruptly went off in the stadium and the game was abandoned. Starc's wife and Australia Women's captain Alyssa Healy was also attending the game when the game was stopped and the stadium was urgently evacuated due to Dharamsala's proximity with the international border. The 35-year-old Starc said he had his doubts heading into that IPL game between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings given the tensions. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc was quoted as saying by The Age. 'That's why I made my decision post-that, and my focus changed to red-ball cricket for about a week prior to coming over here (the UK).' 'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Starc said for the same reasons he had decided not to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy with the Australian team earlier this year. 'There was a little bit of that to my decision around the Champions Trophy (in Pakistan) and then once the tournament (IPL) was delayed, you start to think about guys' preparation for the Test match,' he said, referring to Australia's World Test Championship final against South Africa to be played at Lord's from June 11. Starc said things were 'handled differently for different players and different teams' in Dharamsala. Both the teams along with broadcast crew had returned to Delhi from Pathankot in a special train. 'Things were handled differently for different players and different teams, the guys up in Dharamsala, the Punjab guys were part of that, and while both teams had similar experiences up there, all those guys returned for Punjab, and Jake (Fraser-McGurk) and I chose not to,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'It was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that." 'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like. These are different circumstances,' Starc said. Starc, who won the IPL last year with Kolkata Knight Riders, said having lack of information was also among the reasons he chose not to go back to India. 'It was more a question of not having enough information leading into making a decision (about) things of that degree. I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward,' he said. 'We will stick to the way we've been playing' Starc said irrespective of the talk about the WTC final against South Africa, Australia will look to play the brand of cricket they've been playing. 'We'll stay true to how we've been playing our cricket, the way we've been playing to get into this final, the way we've been playing it the previous two years to get to that final (in 2023),' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We'll have our tactical meetings and whatnot, but ultimately this team has shown over a period of time that we'll stick to the way we play our cricket.' Starc added, 'Close followers of the team would have a different opinion to South Africa about how we're going to play this week.'
