West Aurora's Travis Brown shares mentality of a point guard with his coach. The end result? ‘We just get the win.'

Safe to say, Travis Brown and coach Michael Fowler speak a language all their own.
It's not completely foreign to his West Aurora teammates, but Brown and Fowler's common bond — point guard — gives them a special connection that continues to grow and pay dividends.
Brown, a 6-foot sophomore, was named the Upstate Eight West's player of the year last week after leading the Blackhawks to the conference's division title.
'We have that point guard connection, the way that we talk to each other, the way we figure out stuff,' Brown said of Fowler. 'We can just put our minds in one, and we just get the win.'
They came up with another one Wednesday night as Brown scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Blackhawks to a 54-47 win over the host Mustangs in a Class 4A Downers Grove South Regional semifinal.
West Aurora (21-8), seeded fifth in the Benet Sectional, won its 16th straight game to advance to the 7 p.m. Friday regional final. Fourth-seeded Downers Grove North (24-8) beat Yorkville 51-38.
How fun was that?
'Playoff basketball is really exciting,' Brown said. 'We've gotta play like it's our last game every game.'
Senior forward Terrence Smith added 13 points with four dunks for West Aurora, while senior center Gabe Gonzales chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Brown, who also had four rebounds, five assists and three steals, keyed a 12–0 run that broke a 10-10 tie in the second quarter. It helped the Blackhawks take control 27-14 at halftime.
After Downers Grove South rallied to within six points in the final 90 seconds, West Aurora relied on some clutch free-throw shooting. Brown made 3 of 4 before fouling out with 16 seconds left.
'Sometimes, I wish he'd use his brain a little bit,' Fowler said. 'I told him we were gonna get the ball back with the lead, there's no need for that.'
Brown also caught some grief for not getting out quickly enough on a 3-point shooter.
'That goes for everyone across the board,' Fowler said. 'We expect a lot out of them, defensive-wise. We can't lose people on defense.
'I will give a little leeway on offense because offense will come and go, but we can't be lackadaisical on defense.'
Fowler was the starting point guard as a senior, averaging 7.7 points and 4.5 assists for West Aurora's Class AA state championship team in the 1999-2000 season.
Brown entered the postseason averaging 13.8 points and 4.0 assists.
'We got off to a slow start, but he had a good second quarter,' Fowler said of Brown. 'Travis is someone who can just make plays, and sometimes, you gotta let him go and make plays.'
Brown did just that with a spinning drive down the lane, sinking a floater that led to a 3-point play that capped West Aurora's spurt in the second quarter. He then dribbled out the clock before calmly letting fly a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the top of the key.
'That's Travis — tons of respect,' said Smith, the Iowa football recruit whose return from a knee injury coincides with a winning streak that dates to Jan. 4. 'He works on those moments a lot in practice.
'He went to his bag of moves on that drive, and that three, that's his shot. It was nothing new.'
As for Smith's dunks, three came on lobs from Brown.
'Our connection is pretty tight,' Smith said. 'It took a little bit to get going, but after a while, we connected and it was up from there.'
Just like the connection Fowler expects will continue with Brown.
'Our relationship is still growing,' Fowler said. 'Hopefully, he's like me on the floor as far as what I want done once he's a senior and moving on toward his college career.'

Alex Cooper's Former Coach Says She Has ‘No Recollection' of Harassment Alleged in ‘Call Me Alex'

After 'Call Her Daddy' host Alex Cooper alleged she suffered years worth of sexual harassment from Boston University soccer coach Nancy Feldman, former assistant coach Casey Brown said she had 'no recollection' of the incidents mentioned in Hulu's 'Call Her Alex' docuseries. Cooper told The Boston Globe in an interview published Friday that, amidst a mononucleosis outbreak, she was the only player called into the office to explain 'who' she'd been with and 'how' she got it. The podcaster said she pleaded with Brown, ''Casey, help me',' but instead, Brown 'did nothing about it' and simply turned away. In a statement to the Globe, Brown said she had 'no recollection of what has been suggested' by Cooper. Brown went on to say, 'But let me be absolutely clear: I would never ignore, dismiss or turn away from anyone — a player, a teammate, a friend, a family member — who sought my help in any capacity. As a coach, I understood the weight of my responsibility to protect my players and act accordingly. The suggestion that I would do otherwise is completely false.' The university also issued a statement on Friday, insisting that it has a 'zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment,'as well as a 'robust system of resources, support and staff dedicated to student well-being' and 'a thorough reporting process through our Equal Opportunity Office.' 'We encourage members of our community to report any concerns, and we remain committed to fostering a safe and secure campus environment for all,' the statement concluded. Cooper was on the Boston team from 2013 to 2015 with a full athletic scholarship. As she explained in 'Call Her Alex,' she did not feel she could speak out as it would jeopardize that scholarship. In the two-part Hulu series, the podcaster said she noticed Feldman 'really starting to fixate on me, way more than any other teammate of mine, and it was confusing,' during her sophomore year of college. She added that her coach leveraged field time in exchange for stories about Cooper's sex life and dating history. Cooper claimed she also made specific comments about her body and 'always wanted to be alone with me.' She also alleged in the documentary that the BU athletic director Drew Marrochello, who per the university's website still serves in this position, declined to hear the evidence of harassment when her parents tried to present it to him. According to Boston University, Feldman retired in 2022. Toward the end of filming the documentary, Cooper said she found out that other women younger than her experienced the same abuse she did at the hands of her soccer coach. 'Everything changed for me that day,' she said in an episode of her podcast this week. Blackhawks trade defenseman Victor Söderström's rights to Bruins for prospect, pick

The Chicago Blackhawks have traded the rights of defenseman Victor Söderström to the Boston Bruins for defense prospect Ryan Mast and a 2025 seventh-round pick, the team announced Friday. 🔔we've got a Friday afternoon trade 📰 ➡︎ — Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) June 13, 2025 Söderström, 24, was selected No. 11 in 2019 by the Arizona Coyotes and played three-plus seasons in the Coyotes' organization, including 53 NHL games, before declining to re-sign as a restricted free agent and opting to return to his native Sweden to play in the SHL this past season. Söderström, a right-handed shot, produced nine goals and 28 assists in 49 games for Brynäs during the 2024-25 season and was named the league's top defenseman, winning the Börje Salming Trophy. Advertisement The Blackhawks acquired Söderström's rights from Utah along with Shea Weber's contract and Aatu Räty for a 2026 fifth-round pick on March 7. With the emergence of the Blackhawks' young defensemen, especially Sam Rinzel and Artyom Levshunov this past season, they weren't going to guarantee Söderström an NHL roster spot and block the path for their prospects next season. Söderström had bounced between the AHL and NHL with the Coyotes. The Bruins have a need at right defense after trading Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Charlie McAvoy and Andrew Peeke are their lone returners in 2025-26 on the right side. Mast, 22, was a Bruins' sixth-round pick in 2021. The right-shot, stay-at-home defenseman had zero goals and five assists in 37 games for the Providence Bruins in the AHL during the 2024-25 season. He has one year left on his entry-level contract. He is considered an NHL long shot.

Former NFL star Brown wanted for attempted murder: police

Former NFL star Antonio Brown is wanted by police in Florida on charges of attempted murder (ELSA) Police in Florida have issued a warrant for the arrest of former NFL star Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder, authorities confirmed on Friday. Super Bowl-winner Brown is wanted in connection with an incident at an amateur boxing event in Miami on May 16. Advertisement A copy of the warrant said "several" witnesses saw Brown fire shots following a physical altercation with another man. The warrant said Brown had grabbed the handgun from a security guard. An off-duty police officer providing security for the event detained Brown before other police arrived on the scene. No gun was found on Brown, and the other man involved in the fight with the ex-Pittsburgh Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver was not immediately located. The arrest warrant said two spent shell casings were recovered from the scene along with a discarded firearm holster. Brown later addressed the incident in a post on X on May 17, saying he had been "jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me." Advertisement "Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me," Brown wrote. "I went home that night and was not arrested." The incident is the latest in a long line of legal problems faced by Brown, who spent most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers before later winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. Brown was accused of sexual assault by a former trainer in a 2019 civil suit which he later settled, and also pleaded no contest to burglary and battery in 2020 after an incident with a removal truck company outside his home. Brown's NFL career came to an end after he famously removed his jersey and stormed off the field during a Tampa Bay game against the New York Jets in 2022. rcw/bb
