Iran inches closer to World Cup berth with UAE victory
Tehran - Saba:
Iran took a significant step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, securing a 2-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates in a crucial Asian qualifying match on Thursday.
Sardar Azmoun opened the scoring just before halftime, and Mohammad Mohebi sealed the win with a second goal in the 70th minute.
In a parallel Group A fixture, Uzbekistan defeated Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in Tashkent, with Khodzhi Dianov scoring the decisive goal. Kyrgyzstan played a large part of the match with 10 men, after a red card was given to Said Datsev.
These results leave Iran atop Group A with 19 points, needing only one more point to secure their place in the World Cup finals for the seventh time. Uzbekistan remains in second place, three points behind. The UAE is in third. Kyrgystan is at the botom of the group.
This moves Iran closer to joining Japan as qualified nations for the 2026 World cup.

Spalletti announces departure as Italy coach after Tomorrow's Moldova match
Rome – Saba: Luciano Spalletti confirmed on Sunday that he will step down as Italy coach after the match against Moldova in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Monday. The Italian national team coach revealed that he had already been informed that he would be dismissed, but decided to terminate his contract after the Moldova match tomorrow, Monday, following Italy's humiliating 3-0 away defeat to Norway last Friday. Although the loss came at the start of the team's Group 9 campaign, it complicated Italy's chances of qualifying early, leaving them nine points behind leaders Norway, according to Anadolu Agency. During the press conference he held before the Moldova match, Spalletti said: "Gravina (the president of the Italian Football Federation) informed me that I will be relieved of my duties after the match, and we will terminate my contract." He continued, "I was sorry. Given our relationship, I had no intention of giving up, but I take responsibility. I will win and convince myself on Monday to help my successor." Spalletti added, "I would have preferred to stay and do my job, especially when things aren't going well. However, if this is an apology, I have to accept it. I have always considered this role a service to the homeland, and I want to contribute to building the future of the national team." He continued, "I think it's right to look for the best, and I will finish my contract. I will be present tomorrow against Moldova. I have always maintained that my players are strong, and the results under my management are what they are, and I have to take responsibility." Luciano Spalletti, 66, took over as coach of the Italian national team in September 2023, succeeding Roberto Mancini, on a contract until 2026. Under Spalletti, Italy played a total of 23 matches, winning 11, drawing six, and losing six. The Italian national team missed the last two World Cups, in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Paris Saint-Germain to clash with Inter Milan in champions league final
Munich – Saba: Paris Saint-Germain is set to face Inter Milan tomorrow Saturday in the Champions League final at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. The match, with Romanian referee Istvan Kovac officiating, marks the first-ever Champions League encounter between the two clubs and only the second final between French and Italian teams. The previous one was in the 1992/93 season when Marseille defeated Milan 1-0, also held in Munich. Paris Saint-Germain is making its second final appearance in the last five years, having previously lost to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final. The French club aims to secure its first Champions League title, a long-sought-after ambition after their near miss in 2020. Inter Milan, who reached the final in 2023 and last won the title in 2010, are vying for their fourth Champions League trophy under coach Simone Inzaghi. They will rely on key players such as Argentina's World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez, Nicolo Barella, goalkeeper Yann Sommer, and Pavard. Tournament regulations state that if the match ends in a draw, two 15-minute extra periods will be played. If the score remains tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout. The victor of this final will then compete in the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur, the current European champions. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print
