Steve Coogan spared lengthy driving ban after using The Trip filming as excuse
Actor and comedian Steve Coogan has been spared a lengthy driving ban after using his show The Trip as an excuse for not receiving a heftier punishment for speeding at 97mph.
Coogan was travelling on the M6 in a Range Rover near Telford, Shropshire, on July 29 last year when he was caught going over the 70mph speed limit, a court official said.
In a letter to Birmingham Magistrates' Court, reported by the Evening Standard, he urged the court not to disqualify him as he had already accrued six points on his licence.
The newspaper said the Alan Partridge actor told the court he was expected to film The Trip, which the 59-year-old appears in with co-star Rob Brydon, and a lengthy driving ban would mean 'the production would likely be unable to proceed'.
Coogan's request for five penalty points to be imposed instead of six was granted after he pleaded guilty to the offence on January 30.
He was banned from driving for two months, rather than the six-month ban he would have received had he been hit with six penalty points, and was ordered to pay a £2,500 fine, plus £90 costs and a £1,000 victim surcharge.
The Evening Standard said his letter to the court read: 'I have a series of important film commitments scheduled for 2025, many of which involve driving as a central component of the work.
'I am due to appear in a well-established TV series called The Trip which as the title suggests requires me to drive.
'This starts filming towards the end of June 2025 and if I were unable to drive, the production would likely be unable to proceed.'
Coogan previously successfully argued for a shorter driving ban at Crawley Magistrates' Court in August 2019 after being caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone – saying an extended disqualification would mean he could not film the new series of Alan Partridge.
He was also banned from driving for 28 days at Worthing Magistrates' Court in 2016 for travelling at 54mph in a 30mph zone in a Mazda sports car.

So Pointless will probably double its audience to at least 10." It's not the only ITV show that has been affected by the coverage. Yesterday, Loose Women 's Ruth Langsford announced that the show wouldn't be airing for the rest of the week. "That's it from us today, I'm afraid. It gets worse, we're not on all week," she told viewers. "ITV's coverage of Ascot will be on, but we will be back same time next Monday. Until then, have a lovely week." The Chase first graced our screens in 2009 and swiftly became a staple on ITV. It features regular contestants vying against each other, testing their general knowledge for the chance to bag a hefty cash prize. This isn't the inaugural time the quiz programme has encountered significant disruption this year. Earlier this month, the teatime programme was pulled off air to accommodate coverage of the UEFA Women's Nations League, Spain v England. The Chase also altered its usual timetable last week when two Soccer Aid for UNICEF special episodes were broadcast on Wednesday and Friday. Shaun Williams, David James, Lianne Sanderson, and Dion Dublin comprised the team of four celebrities who squared off against Darragh Ennis. The BBC is shaking things up on a weekly evening show which has been entertaining viewers for decades The host of a long-running TV show has revealed a significant change to the BBC programme's format, set to take effect this week. Question Time, hosted by Fiona Bruce who recently faced criticism for alleged bias, typically features politicians from various parties across the nation gathering at the BBC studios. However, this week sees a shake-up in the show's format, with politics being removed from the discussion. Last week (June 12), the 61-year-old presenter alerted viewers at the end of the episode that she would be hosting a special edition of the show dedicated entirely to the challenges of growing up in the 21st century. The pair have had a long-term fight ever since they appeared in 2017's Celebrity Big Brother, though the full extent of their hatred for one another came out in a Loose Women bust-up Coleen Nolan and Kim Woodburn had one of the most furious arguments ever to be seen in Loose Women history. The How Clean is Your House? star was brought on the show to try and build bridges with Coleen after the two clashed repeatedly during their time in the Celebrity Big Brother house in 2017. An ITV daytime reunion culminated in Kim yellow, crying and storming off set, while panelists Janet Street Porter, Linda Nolan and Linda Robson tried to defend their friend Coleen in the heated row. Prior to the Loose Women showdown, Kim had gained a reputation as one of the UK's most outspoken and explosive reality stars thanks to her appearances I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and Celebrity Big Brother where she really left her mark. During her time Celebrity Big Brother Kim had a pretty difficult time, and came out saying her fellow housemates 'bullied her.' She was at the centre of a number of huge rows in the house, mainly with WAG Nicola McLean, one of which was broken up by security as the presenter lost it in front of the other housemates. Kim said repeatedly since leaving the house she had hated the experience, with housemates making comments about her confrontational approach and overhearing jibes at her "hairpiece." The star also got into rows with Strictly professional James Jordan, who mocked her cleaning career, and Spencer and Heidi Pratt, who she referred to as "evil" and "rotten pigs." Speaking about Kim, eventual series winner Coleen told fellow housemate James Cosmo,"You can't have it out with someone who doesn't listen or acknowledge. She just wants to shout. She doesn't want to listen. I'll then get more and more angry and nothing will be resolved. "People say maybe I'll feel better if I got it off my chest, but I don't think I will because I will walk out more frustrated that she hasn't got it." She added in the Diary Room: "Making out like we're having this bloody love affair. It's disrespectful and so not like that at all. "I've made such a good friend in James C. As of this moment until we leave and until I die, I am not speaking to that woman again. "She is vile, horrible, nasty; the vilest woman I've ever known, met or wish to meet. She's the most fake, horrible woman." Before that point, there were few confrontations between the two women in the house that were shown on air, but things really kicked off when Coleen was crowned the winner, and Kim started her tirade against Coleen in a series of interviews. Kim told the Evening Standard, after Coleen's win was announced: "How that woman won, when Jedward were sitting there, I have no idea. "Public, I don't know how you could let that boring fag ash Lil (win), with what I now know to be a rotten mouth. She shouldn't have won that show ... I'm a bit tired of all these people on Loose Women winning ... It was wrong that she won. She was not entertaining and I was disappointed. "Coleen was running with the foxes and hunting with the hounds. What a shocking woman." Kim then appeared on This Morning and Loose Women though on a day that Coleen was not presenting. After avoiding each other, Kim was invited onto Loose Women to try and salvage their relationship. Kim was instantly on edge and name-called dozens of times, calling Coleen everything from "lying trash" to "two-faced," while Coleen called her "antagonistic" and claimed she was always edging for a fight. The presenter also said she only went on Loose Women because she had been paid to do so, before revealing it was her "brutal childhood" which made her Big Brother experience so terrible, as it reminded her of the ridicule she received as a child.
