Ellen Pompeo Says She Was Detained by TSA for an Hour, Had Bomb Squad Called In: ‘Is This a Joke?'
Ellen Pompeo says she was delayed by TSA for an hour after trying to board a flight with a pricey snack that, triggered a bomb squad investigation.
The 'Grey's Anatomy' star joked about the ordeal, saying she thought her publicist wouldn't believe it if she missed her flight
A self-described nervous flier, Pompeo says she now sticks to carry-on essentials like wipes and water — and leans on her kids for comfort during takeoff.Ellen Pompeo got an unexpected lesson on what snacks are safe to munch on in flight after a recent security debacle.
The Grey's Anatomy star, 55, was stopped by TSA in March for attempting to board a plane with a bag of Erewhon sunflower seeds, she reveals in a new interview with Travel + Leisure.
'I had a bag of sunflower seeds, like organic sunflower seeds from Erewhon, so they were probably the most expensive sunflower seeds money can buy,' she says. 'They literally held me for an hour, and they brought the bomb squad in.'
Pompeo asked the officials, 'What is happening? Is this a joke?' They replied that 'it was most likely a chemical on the packaging of these super expensive, fancy, organic, clean sunflower seeds' that triggered the search.
To get on with the security and boarding process, the award-winning actor-director offered to simply throw the bag in the trash; however, she said they told her that she'd have to wait for the bomb squad to confirm the unopened bag of seeds was secure before being released.
'I almost missed the flight,' Pompeo recalls. 'It was really like no one would ever believe this! I was texting my publicist saying, 'I might not get on this plane, and you're never gonna guess why.''
Despite the TSA kerfuffle, Pompeo tells T+L that she loves to travel and reveals what she brings in her carry-on, excluding Erewhon sunflower seeds going forward, and her pre-seating routine.
'Mints, glasses, water, hand sanitizer, and baby wipes,' she shared. 'I have to do the Naomi Campbell thing and wipe down the entire seat.'
As for how she likes to travel, the proud mom says her favorite way to jet set is with her family.
Pompeo shares three children – Stella Luna, 15, Sienna May, 10, and Eli Christopher, 8 – with her husband, music producer Chris Ivery, to whom she's been married since 2007.
As a self-proclaimed nervous flier, the Good American Family star says her family is her support system during any uneasy moments. 'I like to hold my kids' hands when I take off,' she confessed, 'which is probably a little selfish, and they're probably feeling my anxiety, which probably isn't the best thing to do.'

Dear Abby: My mom changed our family vacation date and didn't tell me
DEAR ABBY: Two years ago, my mom invited all of my family on an international trip during the month of October. One year ago, my sister called me asking if I could 'cover some things' for her. When I agreed and asked why, she said she and our parents were going on the international trip four months early. I was shocked. No one had said the departure date was being moved up. When I asked my other sister about it, she was also still under the impression we were going in October. When I brought it up to my mom, she got very defensive and said we were all invited to come. No, we were not! The plans changed, and only one sister and her family were included. They are on the trip now, and I don't want any part of it. They are posting pictures to our family group chat, and I have decided not to look at them. I'm not sure how to move forward from here. I'm sad and frustrated over this, while they are pretending everything is fine. — LEFT BEHIND IN COLORADO DEAR LEFT: When your mother and sister return from that trip, there needs to be a frank 'family discussion' about what went wrong and why neither felt it was necessary to inform you that you and your other sister were excluded and why. Pretending something that happened never happened never works out, and if it isn't repaired, the fallout can be long-lasting. DEAR ABBY: My son is a loving husband, father, and son. He coaches his 12-year-old son, my grandson, in various sports and sometimes is just a spectator. I'm worried because he often berates his son's playing ability. He has yelled at him during and after games, whether he is coaching or not. He yelled and screamed at him in front of everyone and later at home. I have told my son, to no avail, that it's OK to give constructive criticism but without the yelling. I have also told him how it crushes my grandson each time he does this. My daughter-in-law is also at a loss for how to change his behavior. My husband coached my son in sports when he was young, and he was hard on him, too. I love my family dearly, but I don't know what to do in this situation. Abby, what do you think we should do? — 'HEARTACHING' GRANDMA IN NEW JERSEY DEAR GRANDMA: Your son may be a loving husband, but he could use some coaching as a father. Someone should point out to him that when a parent bullies a child about his poor athletic performance, it rarely produces a positive result. It makes him lose interest in the sport and damages the youth's self-esteem, and the effects can sometimes last a lifetime. After your grandson has had enough of the verbal abuse, don't be shocked if he drops out of the sport. Your son should have learned from the terrible example his own father set that this kind of 'coaching' usually doesn't produce the desired result. He should take out his aggression elsewhere. Frequent Fliers: New United, Jet Blue Partnership Adds Travel Benefits
United Airlines just announced an important new alliance with carrier Jet Blue (Photo by ... More Urbanandsport/NurPhoto via Getty Images) United's MileagePlus was just named just named the world's best airline loyalty program by Global Traveler Magazine with a perfect 10 out of 10 score. Not every rating agrees, but whether it is the very best or just one of the best, it is about to get even better, thanks to 'Blue Sky,' a new partnership between United and JetBlue announced May 29th. The new arrangement will bring important travel benefits to frequent fliers, especially in the mega-popular New York area (Kennedy JFK is Jet Blue's home hub and Newark EWR is United's main base), in Boston, and across the country. I've been a high-status United customer for many years, but have tried to avoid flying Jet Blue, which has been tricky since I often fly from Boston, where Jet Blue has a big presence and a lot of non-stop routes no one else offers. The good news for me—and for thousands of other travelers—is that choices are changing soon, mostly for the better. JetBlue is especially strong on the East Coast and Caribbean, such as this terminal in San Juan, PR JetBlue is not joining the Star Alliance, of which United is a founding member, but the benefits of the new partnership will be very similar to those MileagePlus members now enjoy when flying Star Alliance airlines such as Turkish, Singapore, Lufthansa, ANA, Thai, Air New Zealand, TAP and Swiss. I would argue that Star Alliance is the best of the big three global alliances in terms of the quality of its members and the reach of the destinations they serve well, and especially Turkish Airlines, which flies to more countries than any other carrier, wins tons of awards for both business and economy service, yet usually costs less for either, and has more than a dozen North American gateways including smaller cities such as Boston. I wrote about the benefits of Turkish and why you might want to consider them for farther flung journeys here at Forbes. But closer to home, including the Caribbean and Mexico, JetBlue is suddenly going to be a much more desirable choice. The reasons I have avoided them is mostly for all the fees, for everything from seat selection to baggage (and in my personal experience, terrible customer service when something goes wrong). But especially on the eastern seaboard they have a very robust non-stop network, and the new alliance with United will definitely improve both fees and actual travel experience. JetBlue TrueBlue members stand to gain even more from the deal, with access to United's 350-ish global destinations, including places no one else flies nonstop from the U.S., such as Marrakech and Bilbao (I recently wrote about United's big new route expansion and unique non-stop routes here at Forbes). JetBlue has routes to popular leisure destinations such as Mexcio's Cancun, for the Mayan Riviera ... More and sights such as Tulum. When Blue Sky takes effect beginning later this year (it will roll out in phases, with the first components this fall), it will link the loyalty programs of the two airlines so that United (NASDAQ: UAL) MileagePlus customers can earn and use miles on JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) and likewise, Jet Blue's TrueBlue members can earn and use points on United flights (presumably making it even harder than it already is for existing United frequent fliers to redeem awards). But for United passengers with any tier status (Silver, Gold, Platinum, 1K or Global Services), the real advantages are the day-to-day benefits like free checked luggage, priority boarding, complimentary access to preferred and extra legroom seats, and same-day standby/switch. Likewise, these same benefits will be reciprocally available to all TrueBlue tier members (Mosaic 1-4) flying United. Both carriers will also begin offering each other's flights on their websites and apps to simplify booking and travel. Specifically, all United tier members (silver and above) will get one free checked bag on Jet Blue. Currently on United and most Star Alliance partners all MileagePlus tier members get extra weight (70-pound bags) and Silver members get one free bag, Gold get two, Platinum and above get three, so the JetBlue benefit is not as good, but it's much better than nothing. United recently added a slew of interesting new routes few rivals serve from the US, including ... More Madeira, Portugal All members also get to book Preferred seats when buying tickets with the option for Extra Legroom seats at departure. All get priority boarding, but the actual zone varies by tier of United status. The same benefits (one free bag, some level of priority boarding, better seats in advance and potentially even better at check-in) will be available to TrueBlue customers flying United. The full current details of Blue Sky are explained more here on the United website. 'Blue Sky reflects our airlines' shared focus on innovation and the customer experience,' said United CEO Scott Kirby in a press release. 'The JetBlue brand is tied to a great product and under Joanna's leadership the airline continues to deliver for customers. We're always looking for ways to give our MileagePlus members even more value and benefits and this collaboration gives them new, unique ways to use their hard-earned miles and find options that fit their schedule. Plus, our employees are really excited about United's return to JFK for the longer-term and we're all looking forward to starting up flights very soon.' South Africa is another far-flung destination where United has non-stop service from the US. Longer term there are some additional elements to the partnership, including the provision of United access to up to seven daily round-trip flight slots at JFK International Airport beginning in 2027, while JetBlue and United will exchange eight flight timings at Newark Liberty International Airport, increasing the options of each carrier in the competitive New York Tri-state market. I frequently cover aviation and other topics of interest to frequent travelers, and most recently wrote about Capital One's new slate of a high-end airport lounges here at Forbes. In making United its number one pick, Global Traveler explained, 'The MileagePlus programme continues to impress with a comprehensive suite of benefits designed to meet the needs of frequent business travellers and leisure flyers. Among its notable features: Points are valid for up to 180 months—one of the most extended lifespans in the industry; An expansive global network with access to 363 destinations, up from 342 in 2023; A leading innovation in 2025: the first U.S. airline to introduce pooled miles, allowing families and friends to combine points for redemptions; Seamless upgrades via its mobile app, including automatic window or aisle seat reassignments; The second-best long-haul legroom is 75 inches behind Air New Zealand's Airpoints at 79 inches. These enhancements reinforce United's commitment to enhancing passenger satisfaction, value, and global connectivity.' That connectivity is about the get even bigger, with more travel benefits for frequent fliers, especially on the Eastern seaboard, Mexico and Caribbean.
