The President Is Dead (In Helldivers 2)
'The President of Super Earth has been killed in action by the Illuminate during the fall of Prosperity City.' That was the message that greeted Helldivers 2 players when they logged on last night in one last bid to repel their invading squid-like foes. Some truthers think the hit was inside job. When the dust settled Friday morning, the battle to save Super Earth was over and players had succeeded in winning the extraction shooter's biggest showdown since it launched. Pus they got a new battle station to celebrate.
'The devastation wrought upon our home is immense,' read the latest in-game dispatch from Arrowhead Game Studios. 'Only two Mega Cities remain standing: Prosperity City and Equality-on-Sea. The remainder have been vacated by the enemy, having suffered catastrophic damage at their hands.' New Major Orders are still pending, but in the meantime players get to vote on where to move the new DSS battle station that aided in the fight, and that provides extra military bonuses to Helldivers fighting on whatever planet it orbits.
For anyone who missed the last two weeks, a brief series of entries on the Galactic Map recaps the events from the Illuminate's arrival and torching of Mars and other planets, all the way through players' epic last stand to protect Equality-on-Sea (Helldivers' version of Shanghai). A lot of creative military tactics were improvised and deployed to take down the massive invading Leviathan ships, and a wave of negative Steam reviews, purportedly from Chinese players angry, due to a potential mistranslation, about why they couldn't seem to fully liberate Equality-on-Sea, appears to have subsided.

What happens next is anyone's guess. Arrowhead Game Studios might take some time before kicking off whatever it has planned to let players catch their breath. Maybe the development team is lining up a revenge campaign, or maybe there's still another shoe to drop and Super Earth isn't quite in the clear after all. A new president? In this economy? Maybe they're just an Illuminate plant after all, ready to control Super Earth from within. The beauty of Helldivers 2's fascist space satire is that nothing is ever quite out of the question.
May kicked off one of Helldivers 2's biggest balance patches and content updates in some time, including a new Warbond battle pass with additional melee weapons and the ability to level up and customize most of the shooter's guns. I wouldn't bet on any other big updates anytime soon. That said, Summer Game Fest is just around the corner and Arrowhead used host Geoff Keighley's last big gaming showcase to announce the addition of the Illuminate to the fray. Who knows what's in store for the second half of Helldivers 2's second year?

CDPR boss tells The Witcher 4 hopefuls to "keep calm" as Summer Game Fest hype builds: "Remember that next week we are launching Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red is pouring cold water on the idea that it might surprise everyone with new The Witcher 4 footage during Summer Game Fest 2025. This week, Summer Game Fest host Geoff Keighley took to Twitter to reveal a roster of 60+ partners supporting the 2025 event, and people were quick to spot CDPR among them, prompting a fair bit of speculation in the comments that The Witcher 4 might make an appearance. And while CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski doesn't mention The Witcher 4 specifically and thus doesn't completely rule out the idea, he does strongly suggest in a quote tweet that the imminent release of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2 will be the star of the show on CDPR's side. "I see a bit of creative speculation in the comments section :)," says Nowakowski. "Please remember that next week we are launching Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2. So keep calm, etc ;)" As someone who shamefully, time and time again gets worked up against my best judgment about apparent teases, only to inevitably be disappointed when nothing happens, I think it's admirable that Nowakowski is stamping out that particular fire before it gets out of hand. With The Witcher 4 having entered full-scale production back, it's not unreasonable to expect a new trailer sometime in the near-ish future, but sadly it seems this year's Summer Game Fest will not be that day. Or, maybe, Nowakowski sent that tweet precisely because he wants the new trailer to be a surp— Jordan, you're doing it again, you old fool. Asked about Cyberpunk 2 release date, CDPR boss reiterates "our journey from the pre-production to the final release takes 4 to 5 years on average" but "each project is unique."

How to watch Summer Game Fest's kickoff stream
It's almost that time of year again. Summer Game Fest starts on June 6. The annual kickoff stream begins at 5PM ET on that date. Yeah, we know. The time isn't ideal for folks with regular jobs, but we'll be in Los Angeles to cover the event in person, so you can just hit up the site for updates. The best way to watch this is likely via the YouTube stream. After all, the event is being hosted at the YouTube Theater. There will also be a Twitch stream for the YouTube-averse. The organizers, including host Geoff Keighley, are promising "spectacular new video game announcements, surprises and reveals." I like all three of those things. We don't know that much about what games will be discussed during the two-hour event, but we aren't going in totally blind. The stream will feature a new look at Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, which is a nifty-looking Soulslike action RPG. The open-world MMORPG Chrono Odyssey (no relation to ChronoTrigger) is also making an appearance. There's also the Kojima of it all. This event is taking place just a couple of weeks before we get our hands on the long-anticipated Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The legendary game creator will be on-hand to discuss the title during a dedicated event on June 8, but maybe he'll pop up at the kickoff to give viewers a peek at whatever else he's been working on. However, the kickoff stream is just the beginning. The weekend is host to the Day of the Devs showcase, the Devolver Direct, Wholesome Direct and really so much more.
