New twist in Congress-Tharoor saga—PMO shares Kerala MP's article on Op Sindoor global outreach

Tharoor also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the piece and called the diplomatic outreach a moment of national resolve and effective communication.
In the piece published by The Hindu, Tharoor—who led a nine-member delegation to the United States, Panama, Guyana, Brazil and Colombia—lauded the government's initiative, saying it was 'vital in shaping global perceptions and consolidating international support'.
New Delhi: At a time when Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor's rift with the Congress leadership has become pronounced, the Prime Minister's Office Monday shared an opinion piece by him on the success of Operation Sindoor's global outreach achieved through the visits of multi-party delegations.
'Prime Minister Narendra Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remains a prime asset for India on the global stage, but deserves greater backing…The lessons learned—the power of unity, the efficacy of clear communication, the strategic value of soft power, and the imperative of sustained public diplomacy—will undoubtedly serve as guiding principles as India navigates an increasingly complex international landscape,' wrote Tharoor.

The PMO's social media post came as fresh fodder for Tharoor's detractors in the party. His ties with the Congress first took a hit earlier this year after he praised the Left-led Kerala government's new industrial policy in a newspaper column.
As leaders of the Kerala Congress attacked him over the piece, Tharoor defended himself, saying while he does not believe that the overall industrial climate of the state has changed 'when something good emerges, even if only in one area, it is petty not to acknowledge it'.
Matters came to a head when Tharoor dismissed US President Donald Trump's claim that his administration brokered a truce between India and Pakistan after a military conflict broke out between the two following India's airstrikes on terror bases in Pakistan 7 May. The Congress, at that point, wanted to corner the Modi government over Trump's claims.
Subsequently, Tharoor accepted the Centre's invitation to lead a multi-party delegation to world capitals to garner support for India's Operation Sindoor and its fight against terror. The Congress leadership claimed he did so without consulting the party, which had nominated other leaders to join the delegations.
Nevertheless, Tharoor did not just lead one delegation, but also stirred the pot further by saying that India crossed the Line of Control to carry out surgical strikes on a terror base 'for the first time' under the Narendra Modi government in 2016.
Last week, Tharoor acknowledged his differences of opinion with the 'current Congress leadership'. Tharoor also said he was not invited to campaign for the party in the Nilambur bypolls. 'I do not go where I am not invited,' he told reporters. However, on being asked whether he was going to leave the party, he said he was 'not going anywhere'.
'I am a member of the Congress party. Let the party decide what it thinks about me,' he said.

Pahalgam terror attack: NIA gets 5-day remand of two accused

A local court in Jammu on Monday granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) five-day remand of the two accused who were arrested for harbouring three Pakistani terrorists before the April 22 Pahalgam attack, officials said. Accused, held by NIA, being taken to be produced in the court on Monday. (PTI) Officials said that the two men - Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar from Pahalgam- were produced before the court of additional district and sessions judge, Jammu, Ritesh Kumar Dubey. The court sent the duo into NIA custody for five days till June 27. The NIA had arrested the two men on Sunday for allegedly harbouring the terrorists who killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam two months ago, the agency said on Sunday, marking the first set of arrests in connection with the terror attack. The NIA had said that Parvaiz and Bashir knew about the terror affiliations of the three gunmen and despite that provided them with shelter, food and logistical support in the days leading up to the April 22 attack. The duo has also disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the anti-terror agency has said. The Resistance Front, a proxy group for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba organisation, claimed responsibility for the attack. Indian agencies say the group is a front used by Pakistan to avoid international sanctions. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery.

Cong launches ‘Jan Jagran' campaign over Ambedkar statue row

Bhopal: War of words broke out between the ruling BJP and opposition Congress over installation of Dr BR Ambedkar's statue on premises of Gwalior bench of the MP high court. State Congress on Monday launched a three-day Jan Jagran campaign on the ongoing controversy over the installation of Dr BR Ambedkar's statue. Bhopal district Congress workers headed by PCC chief Jitu Patwari organised a Samvidhan Satyagraha at Sant Hirdaram Nagar here in the state capital. On Wednesday June 25, top functionaries of the Congress will sit-in protest in Gwalior to demand the installation of the statue of Ambedkar within the High Court premises there. The BJP launched a scathing attack on the Congress and said it will observe June 25 as 'Black Day' to recall the emergency imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on that day in 1975. The BJP claimed that the Congress humiliated Ambedkar when he was alive, and its demand to install the statue is just a "political gimmick to salvage its erroding support-base". Addressing a public meeting at the Samvidhan Satyagraha on Monday, Patwari said, "The controversy raised over installation of the statue of Ambedkar in is extremely unfortunate. This is a well-planned conspiracy of anti-constitution forces, which are trying to weaken the fundamental principles of the country. We will fight from every platform..." Former chief minister Digvijaya Singh was present at the function. CM Mohan Yadav said, "Dr Ambedkar had protested against Article 370 but even after that, Congress forced it into the Constitution. Ambedkar's soul had cried that day when through Article 370, the rights of all scheduled caste and scheduled tribe residents in Jammu and Kashmir were denied..." The CM said, "...the Congress will be mentioning the name of Ambedkar and the Constitution because it is fast losing its base in Madhya Pradesh." BJP state chief VD Sharma said the party will observe June 25 as Black Day. Every file has a price: Citizens echo legislator BR Patil's explosive bribery allegations

Bengaluru: Senior Congress legislator BR Patil's explosive allegations on rampant bribery in allotment of govt houses has triggered a wave of public outrage across the state, with citizens and activists saying the rot runs deep across multiple departments and at every level of governance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Although Congress brass shrugged off Patil's remarks as "baseless," his accusations appear to have struck a chord with those who frequently encounter corruption in their everyday dealings with the govt. "If a senior governing party MLA is raising an alarm, the govt should investigate it and not brush it under the carpet," said Prof Viswas Shetty, a political observer. "The silence indicates either complicity or apathy." Ordinary citizens say the system is stacked against them. Lakshmavva, a widow from Bengaluru Rural, who tried to apply for a house under a govt scheme, said: "Every time I asked, they said some document was missing. But once I paid Rs 3,000 to a middleman, my application was cleared in a day." The problem, activists say, lies in a deeply entrenched bribe culture across taluk, revenue inspector, village accountants, and sub-registrar offices — critical points of contact for land records, caste and income certificates and pensions among other essential services. Social activists say the biggest bribe markets are land, housing, and property-related departments. "Land mutation, caste certificates, widow pensions — every file has a price," said SR Prakash, a transparency activist from Chikkamagaluru. "If a file moves without a bribe, it's an exception. People no longer even ask whether they'll have to pay — they just ask how much." In Hassan, autorickshaw driver Rafiq Ahmed said, "They told me everything was free. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now But when I went to the local office, they said they had to 'manage' the file. I had to borrow the money." Dr Indira Hiremath, who heads a civic NGO in Davanagere, said, "Bribes are no longer under-the-table. There are fixed rates, often facilitated by brokers who operate with the knowledge of staff. The system isn't broken — it is rigged." Prof SL Nayak, a retired academician, said an investigation would expose the rot that touches every taluk and district. "It would also invite backlash from within the system," he said, while AP Girish, a retired Lokayukta SP, said it isn't a case of just a "few bad apples". "This is institutionalised corruption," he said. "Every rung of the bureaucracy has been compromised. The political class has allowed this to fester by looking the other way. " Dr Sharath Kushalappa, an advocate, said it is pointless to blame citizens for paying bribes since "the system offers them no choice". "It's time the govt ordered a time-bound investigation and began suspending errant officials," Kushalappa said. Karnataka Lokayukta, already under fire for alleged extortion by some of its officials, is yet to take effective action to discourage corruption in govt offices.
