Williams F1 Boss Has Plan to Get Franco Colapinto Back on the Grid

Franco Colapinto drove the final nine Grands Prix of 2024 for Williams—in place of Logan Sargeant—and scored points in two events.
Alpine last month signed Colapinto as reserve driver on a multi-year deal, with Williams' blessing.
Rumors persist that he will eventually take the place of Jack Doohan in the regular seat at Alpine.
Williams F1 Team Principal James Vowles says Franco Colapinto will return to Williams in the future. In the meantime, Vowles hopes the Argentine will make the Formula grid with Alpine, potentially this season.
Colapinto was thrust into Williams' driver lineup for the final nine Grands Prix of 2024, in place of Logan Sargeant, and scored points in two events.
The 21-year-old Colapinto was unable to land a full-time race seat for 2025, with Williams having already signed Carlos Sainz to partner Alex Albon on respective multi-year deals, though other teams were interested in his services.
Alpine last month signed Colapinto as reserve driver on a multi-year deal, with Williams' blessing, and rumors persist that he will eventually take the place of Jack Doohan in the regular seat at Alpine.
Earlier today, Vowles said that the plan is for the 21-year-old to eventually return to Williams.
'There's a period of time whereby I hope he is racing for Alpine,' Vowles said on Friday. 'The reason why we did this is that I wanted him to be racing in '25 and or '26. It's the best chance he has is with Alpine, as far as (getting on the grid), that's why he's there.
'And I don't mean that to the detriment of Jack (Doohan). I hope Jack has a successful time. But ultimately, Franco is my driver (at Williams) that I want back in that car. After a period of time, he'll return to Williams. That period of time is not a line set in stone where I can look you in the eye and say it. But I can say he'll be back to Williams at some point.'
Vowles was speaking at the unveiling of Williams' FW47 at Silverstone on Friday—in an interim livery ahead of next Tuesday's F1 season launch—and was cautious about the team's prospects this season.
'I've been very clear from the beginning that 2026 is the large year I want to make sure we put focus onto,' Vowles said, referring to next year's wide-ranging regulation changes.
'And that will have an effect on 2025, a sacrifice in some elements. For me, my head is clear. It's about the future of this organization. So, the result of that is, let's get some boots on the ground early, two experienced drivers, and pick up what we can.'

Lewis Hamilton labels talk of strained relationship with Ferrari engineer as ‘BS'

Photograph: Bradley Collyer/PA Lewis Hamilton has dismissed speculation about what has been interpreted as a fractious relationship with Riccardo Adami, his race engineer at Ferrari, describing it as 'BS' and insisting the pair enjoy a healthy working relationship. The issue has previously been raised several times this season as Hamilton develops his dynamic with Adami and came to the fore once more because of some testy exchanges at the last round in Monaco, including when Hamilton asked his engineer at the end of the race: 'Are you upset with me or something?' To which he appeared to receive no reply. Advertisement Speaking before this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, Hamilton was insistent that the pair retained a strong relationship. Related: F1 team heads call for Monaco to 'move with the times' and make track change 'There's a lot of speculation, most of it is BS,' he said. 'Ultimately, we have a great relationship. He's been amazing to work with, he's a great guy, working so hard. We both are. 'We don't always get it right every weekend. Do we have disagreements? Like everyone does in relationships but we work through them. We're both in it together. We both want to win a championship together. We're both working towards lifting the team up.' Advertisement After the race in Monaco the Ferrari team principal, Fred Vasseur, similarly dismissed it as the pair learning to work with one another, combined with some radio issues specific to Monte Carlo. Hamilton finished fifth, well behind his teammate Charles Leclerc who was second. During the race there was some terse communication between the British driver and Adami, with Hamilton believing he was not receiving enough information from his race engineer about the gaps on track. It followed Hamilton's rather dismissive query to the team, suggesting they were having a tea break rather than making strategic decisions at the Miami round. Expectations were enormously high when Hamilton joined Ferrari but their car is not up to scratch and every aspect of his relationship with the team has come under scrutiny. He has been clear he expects himself and the Scuderia to do better but was unequivocal his relationship with Adami was not an issue and the focus on it was an irrelevance. Advertisement 'It's just all noise and we don't really pay any attention to it,' Hamilton said. 'It can continue if you want but it doesn't make any difference to the job that we're trying to do. 'Our relationship is great. And there are no problems. We are constantly learning more and more about each other and adapting the way we want to work. He has worked with lots of different drivers before. But we don't have any problems whatsoever.' Beyond Ferrari, the topic set to dominate the weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is the clampdown on flexing front wings that comes into effect in Spain. The technical directive from the FIA is intended to end any debate over whether teams have been running front wings that flex too much and gain an advantage while under load with, in this regard, fingers being pointed at title leaders McLaren. Advertisement The rule has been brought in for the ninth round of the season to give all the teams time to develop wings that would pass the new load-bearing tests this weekend, with speculation that it might cause something of a reset in the pecking order. However, Lando Norris, who won in Monaco, maintained it would not make a difference to McLaren. 'No, not at all,' he said. 'There are tweaks here and there, but nothing that will change how we have to do it.' After the FIA imposed an updated test on flexing rear wings at the Chinese GP earlier this season, which had no impact on McLarens's pace advantage, the team are bullish this too will not usurp them from the top spot.

Fernandes starts as Man Utd fight back to win in Hong Kong

Captain Bruno Fernandes started Manchester United's match against Hong Kong on Friday despite mounting speculation over his future as they came from behind to win 3-1, with teenage substitute Chido Obi scoring twice. Beaten and booed off in Malaysia on Wednesday, Ruben Amorim's side were underwhelming in the first half of their second post-season friendly as they brought the curtain down on a dismal campaign. Advertisement Having fallen behind to a soft goal, Obi struck with a smart turn and finish five minutes after the break and again with a glancing header on 82 minutes. Ayden Heaven scored with a late header as United ended their Asia trip on a winning note. Manager Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag during the season but led United to a dismal 15th-placed finish in the Premier League, has plenty to ponder during the post-season break. Foremost among his concerns is the future of Fernandes, who is reportedly weighing up a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. The Portugal international had a bright first half at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium, which was about 85 percent full, before going off. Advertisement Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho also started despite appearing to be heading towards the Old Trafford exit. Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund were the other regulars to feature from the off in southern China, where light rain all afternoon and evening made for a slick surface. Fernandes and Garnacho caught the eye in the first half against a Hong Kong team ranked 153rd in the world, but it was the hosts who took the lead in the 19th minute with their first attack. It was a mistake from United's stand-in goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who allowed a decent but saveable effort from Brazil-born Juninho to fly off him into the net. Advertisement Amorim stood with his hands on his hips. As the rain came down and the wind picked up, his compatriot Fernandes should have scored when clean through but opted for a Hollywood finish and was denied. Winger Amad Diallo, who made an obscene gesture to fans in Kuala Lumpur after suffering personal abuse, came on with Obi for the second half as Amorim made wholesale changes. Garnacho and Fernandes both made way, for what could be their final time in a United shirt. pst/jw/tc

Phillies Land Yankees' Devin Williams in Blockbuster Trade Idea

The Philadelphia Phillies will have a few ways to improve at the deadline. With Jose Alvarado suspended for the postseason and 80 games in the regular season, there's no debate that the team will be interested in trading for a reliever. However, without giving up one of their top prospects, there might not be much chance for the Phillies to land an elite arm. Despite that reality, Clutch Points' Garrett Kerman proposed the idea for the Phillies to trade for Devin Williams of the New York Yankees, arguably the best closer in baseball when he's at his best. Advertisement Yes, Williams has struggled to start the year, but he's typically been excellent throughout his career, and it isn't out of the question to suggest that he'll bounce back and look like himself soon. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson during the eighth inning against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images His trade idea would only move Jordan Viars and Andrew Baker, allowing the Phillies to land a star without giving up too much. 'The Phillies could gamble on Williams' elite changeup-still generating a .209 xBA-by trading Jordan Viars, a power-hitting outfielder stuck behind Philadelphia's MLB-ready prospects, and reliever Andrew Baker. 'Williams' $9 million expiring contract is a low-risk investment, and a reunion with pitching coach Caleb Cotham (who oversaw Williams' 2023 breakout in Milwaukee) might unlock his prior form. If Williams rediscovers even 80% of his peak ability, he'd offer a proven late-inning option alongside Jordan Romano,' Kerman wrote. Advertisement The Yankees wouldn't have much reason to take this deal, even if they want to move on from Williams at the deadline. However, from their perspective, it seems likely that he'll be on the roster past July 31. William has started figuring it out recently, a promising sign for a Yankees team looking to win a World Series just like the Phillies.
