A surprising twist has shaken the sports world. At a recent hockey competition, something happened that caused many supporters and specialists to stop and consider. The number of viewers was more important than only who won or lost.
Though the NBA Finals were packed with drama and high level athletes, a hockey competition with only four teams almost equaled their viewership. This could indicate a change in American preferences for viewing.

NBA Finals viewership
Leading his country to triumph in the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off—an international hockey tournament including the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland—Cole Makar of Team Canada, representing the Colorado Avalanche, helped on June 22, 2025. Makar commented,
'I just hope everybody enjoyed watching the game. It was a lot of fun for us to play in.'
Fans saw their favorite NHL players compete for their countries for the first time since 2016.
Particularly during the national anthems, the game brought forth intense emotions from both American and Canadian supporters.
The passion and pride shown on the ice drew major interest. Over 16.1 million people tuned in to watch the final, with 9.3 million from the U.S. and 6.3 million from Canada, according to ESPN and TSN reports.
That number was only 0.25 million fewer than the NBA Finals Game 7, a major shock considering how big the NBA usually is in the U.S.

The NHL averaged 6.5 million viewers during the entire Face-Off tournament across North America—up 25% from the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
NBA Finals ratings drop despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's historic Game 7 performance
Attending the NBA Finals this year were the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. ESPN reports the Thunder won 103–91 after six grueling games on June 21, 2025. With 29 points and 12 assists, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, their star player, became only the fifth player in NBA history to achieve a 20-10 stat line in a Game 7.

Even with that exciting finish, the average viewership of the series dropped by 9.3% from last year. Only 16.35 million watched Game 7, down from 31 million during the 2016 NBA Finals. Viewership peaked at 19.3 million around 9:45 p.m. ET, but the overall drop has many wondering if the NBA is losing some of its audience.
Experts are asking: will the 4 Nations Face-Off keep growing while the NBA numbers fall? The NHL has not yet confirmed a second tournament, but fans are already waiting for news.

MLC 2025: Shubham Ranjane, Donovan Ferreira star as TSK return to winning ways; thrash LAKR by 52 runs

Shubham Ranjane of Texas Super Kingsplay a shot during match 15 of the Cognizant Major League Cricket season 3 between Texas Super Kings and LA Knight Riders held at the Grand Prairie cricket stadium, Grand Prairie, United States of America (USA). (SPortzpics) Riding on a steady knock from Shubham Ranjane and a quickfire cameo from Donovan Ferreira, the Texas Super Kings (TSK) defeated the LA Knight Riders (LAKR) by 52 runs at Dallas' Grand Prairie Stadium. Batting first, TSK posted 196 for 8, and their bowlers then restricted LAKR to 144 for 7. LAKR struck early as Shadley van Schalkwyk claimed three wickets in his opening spell during the powerplay. Having lost three of his partners rather quickly, Smit Patel set about rebuilding the innings with a sublime Shubham Ranjane at the other end. The pair added 66 off 46 deliveries for the fourth wicket before Andre Russell accounted for Patel when he tried to scoop him down to the fine leg boundary. It was a relief for TSK when Ranjane found timely support in the swashbuckling Donovan Ferreira, who wasted no time in launching an onslaught by dispatching Ali Khan for back-to-back boundaries in the 14th over. Ferreira's dominance extended further when he took on Andre Russell in his third over, disrupting what had otherwise been a tidy spell for the Jamaican all-rounder. Ferreira and Ranjane's late flurry meant the Super Kings added 72 runs in the last 5 overs to finish with a commanding total. MLC 2025: Faf du Plessis on why cricket's American dream is just getting started In response, the Texan bowling line-up maintained the momentum, making life difficult for the Knight Riders' top order. TSK's decision to bring in Akeal Hosein proved fruitful, as the left-arm spinner struck in his first over, removing the out-of-form Alex Hales and Nitish Kumar off successive deliveries. These wickets dented LAKR's morale and left them struggling to keep up with the rising required run rate. Ultimately, the mounting pressure proved too much for the LA Knight Riders, as the TSK bowlers continued to pick wickets at regular intervals. Noor Ahmad, TSK's standout bowler this season, returned to form with figures of 2 for 27 in his 4 overs, including a beauty to dismiss Andre Russell. Brief Scores TSK: 196/8 in 20 overs (Shubham Ranjane 70, Donovan Ferreira 43, Smit Patel 38; Andre Russell 3/37) LAKR: 144/7 in 20 overs (Unmukt Chand 30, Jason Holder 26; Akeal Hosein 2/10, Noor Ahmad 2/27) Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. OKC Thunder Celebrate First NBA Title with Epic Downtown Parade

Jalen Ross couldn't stop smiling. The 19-year-old lifelong Thunder fan was one of thousands flooding Oklahoma City's streets to celebrate a moment two decades in the making — an NBA championship finally brought home. The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers on Sunday to win their first title. On Tuesday, Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, All-Star Jalen Williams, and the rest of the roster basked in the adoration of fans undeterred by 90-degree heat. 'It's crazy,' Ross said. 'From the days of wearing my KD jersey every day, to crying when he left, having the Russell Westbrook Fathead in the living room during the playoffs... it's crazy to think about. But we did it.' The parade ended at Scissortail Park, where Mayor David Holt declared a city holiday for Clay Bennett, the Thunder's ownership head — then added days for general manager Sam Presti, coach Mark Daigneault, and every player on the roster, drawing thunderous cheers with each name. 'I just feel like they really represent us as Oklahomans and put us — the whole state and the whole city — on their backs,' said Chris Willert, 15, from nearby Norman. Oklahoma City's NBA journey began in 2005-06, when the New Orleans Hornets temporarily relocated post-Katrina. The city embraced the league and rookie Chris Paul. In 2008, the Seattle SuperSonics moved, and the Thunder were born. With Durant, Westbrook, and Harden, OKC became a contender, but heartbreak followed. It lost the 2012 Finals, saw Harden leave, and suffered a stunning 2016 collapse against Golden State — followed by Durant's controversial departure. Westbrook's MVP run and triple-doubles couldn't push it past the first round, and the team eventually rebuilt from scratch. Now, with a young core and renewed spirit, Oklahoma City is basking in its long-awaited triumph. 'To see this team rise and win, bringing a title to Oklahoma City — it feels like all of us just won something bigger than a trophy,' said Daniel Sweet, a pastor in Norman. 'It's our story now. This team embodies what every family and community wants to be. Tough, passionate, and together no matter what.' Related Topics Oklahoma City Thunder
